Area Overview

Barmouth is a seaside resort in north-west Wales, with a large sandy beach, shops, pubs and hotels. There is an ‘old town’ which is very popular with tourists, and has pretty cottages and steep steps leading down to the harbour. Barmouth Bridge is a particular feature of the town. Visitors can walk across the bridge to enjoy expansive views of the bay. Warm summers with temperatures reaching 22°C offer the chance for tourists to relax on the sandy beach, and mild winter temperatures of around 6°C mean that out-of-season winter breaks are also popular.

Things To Do in Barmouth

  • Lifeboat Visitor Centre: An award-winning visitor centre situated on the promenade. A viewing gallery offers panoramic views of the coastline. Visitors get a close-up view of the lifeboats, and can purchase souvenirs from the shop.
  • Barmouth Bridge: A railway viaduct spanning the Mawddach Estuary, Barmouth Bridge has a wooden promenade running its length of half a mile. A railway halt at the end means that people can take the train back if they wish.
  • Barmouth ferry: Travel to Penrhyn Point on the ferry, and then connect to the Fairbourne Steam Railway. This narrow gauge railway is over 100 years old, and offers adults the opportunity to travel on the footplate with the driver.
  • Mawddach Trail: A level cycle path and walkway made using the old railway track bed. Attractive views and plenty of picnic spots make this a popular place for walking, cycling and bird watching.
  • Llanfair Children’s Farm Park: Feed the animals, play crazy golf, enjoy a picnic or have lunch in the cafe.
  • King Arthur’s Labyrinth and the Corris Craft Centre: King Arthur’s Labyrinth is set beneath the mountains of Snowdonia. The craft centre offers workshops, a cafe, and shops in which to buy hand-crafted items.

When to go to Barmouth

The end of June sees the start of the annual Three Peaks Yacht Race, with quayside stalls and music. Barmouth Kite Festival takes place in July, with a walking festival scheduled each September. Barmouth is a popular destination all year round due to its mild climate, but the summer months are the busiest time of year.
