Evenings in July are still warm and balmy, even in England, perfect for meals outside at a restaurant or a few glasses of wine at the end of the day. July days are long, so you have more time to fit in that visit to a castle or mountain walk. If you are sun-worshipers then the Mediterranean resorts are at their peak in July, before the close-down that happens in August. If you prefer cool there are still plenty of options, just go North instead of South. Scotland, Scandinavia, even Iceland all make great July destinations.

If you take the children out of school for the last few weeks of the summer term you can still find mid-season prices. Everyone has been looking forward to the school summer holidays and going away. If you go away at the start of the holidays you can have another few days away in late August before the back to school frenzy starts again. Even today’s technology-addicted teenagers enjoy spending time outside in the sun, whether sun-bathing or playing ball games on the beach and July is perfect for that.

July is a great time for groups of teenagers who have just finished their A-levels to head away together on their first independent holiday without parents around. Exhausted after months of studying and preparation July is time to let down their hair and stay at a villa in Spain just to chill out and soak up the sun. For older groups July is hot but without the oppressive and exhausting heat that comes in August. If you are heading away on a golf break you will find courses still in perfect condition.

Three reasons why an august break makes sense

The long days of July mean that you can fit in more daytime activities from hill-walking to sun-bathing, while the long evenings are perfect for chilled wine or cool beer watching the world go by. You can be outside for a pleasant early morning walk before breakfast when the day is at its best. After breakfast you can go off on your planned day’s activities. In the evening you can have a drink two over dinner and the Sun is still not even setting.

Predictable sunshine, even in England, is a major reason for taking a cottage or apartment break in July. In Europe, too the weather is at its most predictable, hot and dry. Fine weather just makes everyone feel more cheerful and puts them in the party mood. Soaking up the sunshine at a villa or house near the beach gives you a great chance to relax, unwind and have a proper summer holiday.
