Dates and places: Jubilee Year of Mercy
The ritual opening of the Holy Door of Mercy at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City will mark the official start of the jubilee year, during which time the faithful are asked to celebrate and live with mercy and forgiveness. The Holy Year of Mercy will conclude on 20 November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King.
At the request of Pope Francis, the jubilee will extend beyond Rome to cathedrals, basilicas, and churches around the world. The Rite of the Opening of the Door of Mercy in local churches takes place on 13 December, the Third Sunday of Advent, at the same time as the opening of the Holy Door in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran.
Throughout the year, groups and individuals will make pilgrimages to jubilee churches, which culminating with entering the Holy Door or Door of Mercy. See Doors of Mercy around the world
