The perfect home from home

  • 5 of 5

We came over from the UK for a little 5 day getaway after the school holidays. We found Yiannis cottage to be a beautiful little gem of a place in which to spend lazy days by the pool and from where to base ourselves for easy access to the beautiful and varied region of Western Crete. Manolis did everything to make our stay comfortable and prepared a fridge full of Cretan delights for our arrival. The people of Spilia village all made us feel very welcome and we enjoyed meeting them over the course of our shopping trips to the local mini-market and cold beers in the local taverna. Spilia village is an ideal location and Yiannis cottage a beautiful and very comfortable home from home. Our only regret is that 5 days is too short a time within which to explore all that Western Crete has to offer. We have no intention of looking for a different Cretan cottage for subsequent visits, Yiannis cottage will be our number one choice in the future.

Yiannis Cottage is a perfect home from home; our 4th visit to Yiannis’ Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The day begins with the gentle sound of the dawn chorus - the birds start including the hens (cota) in the garden next door followed by the goats and sheep.A motorbike putters along the valley road. The church chimes start at 7 am.Fresh eggs for breakfast courtesy of those same hens who love to be fed. Greek yoghurt & honey that is provided by our hosts. Yiannis or Katerina (our hosts) passes by along the adjacent lane - ‘kalimera OK?’ ‘Kala’ (good - a useful word as most things are kala). Coffee on the terrace outside the front door sometimes joined by Manolis our host’s son & house manager who suggests restaurants or points of interest. . A trip to the beach? (Golden beach was a new recommendation from M this year). A walk in Deliana gorge to see how much water is flowing this year and lunch at a To Faragi? Lunch at Wave in the Rocks on the Rodopu peninsula or Gramvoussa on the Balos peninsula? Investigations of Minoan, Roman settlements near Kissamos. Or a walk from the house to the churches at Aya Panagia or St Johns Cave Church in Spilia (which means cave). Early or late season the Vassiliopolou restaurant is open at weekends - a ‘don’t miss’. Kolimbari is 3 km along the road with fish tavernas (Diktina is run by a fisherman), fresh fish shop, butchers (an excellent one in the Synka supermarket with English spoken). Cafe snack bar Rosmari’s. Everything from cappuccino to malotira (Greek mountain tea). Homemade cheese pies? Tuna salad sandwich? Maybe a raki? Sun or the shade. No news on the TV. If you want to watch a sports events ask Costas; he will check the TV schedule for Cosmote. Day trip to Chania to visit the ancient Agora market, shop, walk the Venetian harbour, wander the old town streets.

Heading back towards home - an evening drink at the friendly and floral Vouves taverna at the top of the local world near the oldest olive tree and an amazing view of the coast. Sunset watched from the other YC terrace, by the pool, maybe a dip.

Home cooked dinner or BBQ or dinner at the Platanias taverna by the historic fountain in the tree shaded Spilia Square, three minutes walk away - cooked by Yiorgios and served by his two brothers Nikos and Costas. Special Cretan salad with mizithra the local cheese.

The Cretan hospitality is famous and consistent and our hosts are a perfect example.

We have only been back a week; a part of me is still there but I will rejoin it next year.

Just exceptional ....

  • 5 of 5

Well, the truth is that we booked the house because of the good reviews.

We made a very good decision.

A hire car was very kindly arranged by the hosts. A man who worked for the rent a car office waited us to the exit, we took the car and we just followed the detailed directions by Manolis (the owner)...It was really easy to find the Cottage and Manolis waited for us to give us the keys and many advices of things to do.

We tried to do most of them but we needed more than 2 months so we will come back in the near future. We would like to come on September but the dates we could, wasn't available.

The cottage is located in the village called Spilia, which is really charming. There is a traditional tavern a few meters away from the Cottage. You need less than 10 minutes drive and you have many choices,.. Of course you have to ask Manolis...For example, we went to Deliana gorge (Samaria gorge was closed), it was so beautiful. On the way back we also went to the tavern in Vassilopoulos ( a hidden non touristic place) and to an oil factory in Astrikas...Fantastic!!

Falassarna was our favors beach (20-25 minutes drive) , elafonnisi (less than 1 hour drive) is magnificent, specially this period. Although there are some tips which Manolis gave us made the difference. We also went to Chaniaand we also found a lot of alternative (non touristic) places to visit.

We needed almost 20 minutes drive to go there.

The most impressive thing was the hospitality...

In the middle of the week the house was cleaned by Eleni, linen, towels changed!!

The pool is huge for 2people so the Cottage is perfect for couple with 1-2 kids.

We were there just the 2 of us and we really had a grate time in the pool during the day and at night where the lights made the place really amazing.

We would highly recommend the property for exploring Western Crete .Manolis and his family offer an outstanding experience and it certainly ranks as one of our best holiday rentals! We hope to return!

So nice place!!So nice host!

  • 5 of 5

Every time we book a house for our holidays, the first thing we look is the location and the reviews of the property.

So, a cold evening on our apartment in Germany we decided to go ahead for a booking in Yiannis Cottage. Even if our expectations were high, they were far exceeded. The Cottage and area are stunning, but it is really the people that make this place magical. Manolis, the house owner, is kindhearted, knowledgeable and respectful and he made us feel like friends right from the start.

The Cottage owner Manolis was a lovely kind host, providing a welcome pack including honey, yoghurt, olive oil, home grown fruit and vegetables, butter and eggs and even a bottle of wine and raki, which was all unexpected and gratefully received!

One of the biggest advantage of the Cottage is the location. It is close to Chania (20-25minutes drive) and so close to the most popular beaches of Crete! Falassarna, balos, Elafononissi are not so far away from the Cottage.

There is a mini market in the village, where you can find anything you need (vegetables, fruits, bread, milk, etc, except fresh meat)

A bigger supermarket is situated on Kolymbari. You can find there more things like fresh meat! Kolymbari is the next village of Spilia (2-3 minutes drive) following the direction to the beach.

We had 2 times grate seafood to 2 different local taverns there.

We also went to Deliana gorge, Astrikas olive factory and to a winery nearby. All of them was less than 15 minutes drive away from the Cottage.

We have already booked the house for our holiday next summer, so we highly recommend it!!

Thank you Manos!

Spila is located on the edge of the plain of Chania 2 km from Kolymvari, 22km from Chania city-centre and 35 km from the airport of Chania. The village is near the junction with the national road which allows access to Chania in less than 20 minutes. Close by, there are 1 small mini market and a bigger one (2 minutes drive) where you will find provisions; fresh bread, fruit and vegetables and indispensable articles. You can also order by phone and the owner of the mini market can bring anything you need at the Cottage!!!

The village of Spilia is named after the Cave of Ai-Yiannis Erimiti which is to be found in the west part of the village on the hill above the Villa (1 km away), on an impressive site of great historical importance and exceptional views of the olives groves, the sea and the White Mountains.

The Cave of St John the Hermit looks like an oblong arcade. Its length is about 135 meters and the scientists believe that it is essentially a prehistoric river bed.

The history of the cave is associated with the ascetic life of the hermit John, since he lived there – according to researchers – in the 6th century.

A short distance away from the Villa (100m away) is situated a dense vegetation of extremely high Plane Trees, that are centuries old.

Under the trees is a very pleasant and local tavern which offers traditional food.

In charming Kolymvari (5 minutes by car) you will find the Iera Moni Gonias Monastery and the Orthodox Academy of Crete.

In the village there are many pleasant tavernas, restaurants and kafenions, a post office, a medical center, a supermarket and bank / ATM’s.

The area is famous for its fish, landed fresh daily from the harbour, the fragrant wine of the Kissamos area and the awarded olive oil with it’s low acidity rate.

Spilia village is ideally located for you to visit the most important coasts of Crete, the well-known Falassarna with the immense sandy beach, the ancient town and the enchanting lagoon of Elafonisi, attractions awarded by international organizations for their clearness and the multi coloured sand formations. In the wider area is set the beautiful lagoon of Balos at Gramvousa where you can enjoy all the tints of blue and green.

Night-life, beach bars, wind-surfing and other extreme sports can be found in abundance all in the Platanias area which is not far away.

The famous Samaria Gorge, and many other wonderful Gorges & walks in the countryside are another option.

We can also offer you several sevices::Car rentals, Transfers,Excursions to Samaria gorge or other gorges, guided walks,4X4 safari to Balos,Cooking services and Cretan cooking lessons, Spa, treatments, etc
