About the property

Self-catering cottage sleeps up to 5 persons + baby. Free wifi & BTVision

Bay View Cottage is set in a quiet location on the outskirts of St Austell offering superb views over the Bay. The cottage is accessed by a private gated entrance onto a stunning enclosed driveway with plenty of parking. Within easy access are all the major tourist attractions- The Eden Project, Gardens of Heligan, Trewithen, Charlestown, Padstow, Newquay are all just a short drive away. Bay View Cottage offers free wifi, TV with BTVision (with BT sports & kids channels), DVD player, stereo, fully-equipped kitchen and a washing machine. There is a second TV upstairs so that you don't need to battle over the TV. There is plenty to keep children of all ages entertained and there is a communal garden occupied also by our friendly mini-shetlands, Dillon, Honey and Flame who are always ready and waiting for company. It is a great base from which to explore everything that Cornwall has to offer and is especially ideal if you like to have a bit of peace away from the crowds in the evenings. Children can play in the grounds while adults get to relax with a glass of wine on the private patio with views out to St Austell Bay.

The Eden Project is on the doorstep at Carn Grey. The Eden Project has plenty of all year round activities to offer- winter skating rink, Easter activities and Christmas markets etc. Of course, during the summer there is always plenty going on in the Tropical and Mediterranean biomes- not to mention all of the music events and festivals. Carn Grey is a fantastic vantage point to survey the South Coast and is also within easy access of all that the North Coast has to offer. If you would prefer not to drive, St Austell has a mainline train station and there are also very regular bus services. St Austell itself also has plenty to offer for those rainy days- St Austell Brewery, Wheal Martin Museum and Charlestown Shipwreck Centre all give a fascinating insight to the local history. St Austell also has a new cinema complex and a small new shopping centre complete with Eden Cafe which offers live music events. Truro is a 20min drive and offers a fantastic place to shop (if the mood takes you). Nearby Par offers an indoor soft play zone for young children along with an indoor Cornish market.

About Karena Bucknill

We moved here in 2007 as we fell in love with the stunning views and the unique character of Carn Grey. The location is so ideal for accessing both the South and also the North coast of Cornwall.

Why Karena Bucknill chose Newquay & St Austell area

Bay View Cottage offers both the benefits of a quiet location ideal for relaxing away from the summer crowds and yet also offers all the amenities to make your holiday as stress free as possible. Access to the A30 is easy and so wherever you want to go for the day is never too arduous.

What makes this cottage unique

Children can find plenty to do at the cottage if you decide to spend the day relaxing at home. The ponies are always ready and willing companions (as are also the guinea pigs) and there is plenty of space for children to run free come rain or shine!

Lovely peaceful cottage for all the family

  • 5 of 5

We had the most fantastic short break with our 2 children, 5 years and 2 years. They absolutely loved it and we were able to relax whilst the children were kept amused by the adorable little shetlands and the secure outside space. It was peaceful and quiet and we hardly saw anyone. The cottage was fantastically well-equipped and we felt completely at home from the second we arrived. The patio area is a lovely spot from which to relax with a cuppa and enjoy the view over the Bay. We especially loved that whilst feeling welcome, we were left alone to enjoy our own space. But Karen was just a phone call away and ready to help when the children managed to retune the TV!

We shall definitely return and hope to stay longer next time- thank you for a lovely few days away!

Brilliant get away

  • 4 of 5

It was a really lovely location, with beautiful gardens to explore which our boys both enjoyed. Perfect for beaches, Eden and other days out. We would love to still be there, and Karen was very helpful.

Thank you so much for a lovely holiday!

(The only reason we didn't give it 5 is because there are elements of the house that need a bit of TLC (e.g. slight drip from the kitchen ceiling now and again) and the games room is a little bit tired, the snooker table needs a good clean and the darts were a bit rusty, but nothing that would stop us returning!)

Owner's Response: I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay! It's so nice to see young families enjoy the ponies and the garden. Insofar as the games room is concerned, we do not sell this as part of the cottage since it's only the garage that houses the boiler and my own kids used to play snooker in there. If guests wish to use it, that's great, but it is not set up to be used. Thanks for the review & we hope you'll return one day!

Would have been great for grown ups only

  • 1 of 5

I was concerned at the safety of the child's bedroom, in which there was an accessible, unlocked and unrestricted window that easily opened very wide with a sheer drop from the first floor.

I was also dissatisfied by the owner's response to my request to address this (to try the keys from the downstairs windows - which didn't fit; then to suggest blocking access to the window - which couldn't be done; then saying that fire safety demands that it is left like this as a fire escape).

We did not feel comfortable leaving our 3 year old daughter in that room alone, and so one of us had to sleep in the room with her, which was very disruptive and we decided to cut the holiday short.

This was a real shame as the place is beautiful, and in every other respect the cottage is very well equipped, comfortable and a lovely place to stay.

I would have raised this privately with the management company in the first instance but was disappointed that they did not respond at all when I made contact with them.

Owner's Response: I'm saddened that these guests were not satisfied with the cottage. Bay View Cottage has been a happy place for many families with young children for the past 10 years and I have never received any such complaint in respect of the window. Indeed all previous guests have enjoyed all that the cottage offers and many have returned, some yearly. I tried my best to help Ben with his issues, but I explained that the window needs to open fully since it is a fire escape and is a fire regulation. I offered solutions, but Ben was evidently not satisfied with this. I suggested that his child sleep on the sofa bed downstairs since I was evidently not going to be able to resolve the issue of the window. We try our utmost to resolve any such issues, but in my experience as a mother of 3 children (one autistic), there is no such thing as a child-proof environment. As said, I am saddened by this review since I make such great efforts to keep guests happy. Children love the cottage and it would be a great shame to not welcome families any longer simply because children are children and need to learn the dangers of every day life. I am beginning to understand why other holiday let owners do not welcome young children- such a shame that this is the World that we live in!

Perfect getaway spot

  • 5 of 5

We had a very comfortable stay at the cottage. It was given to us in a very clean condition and was equipped with all the essentials required by us. The location was ideal with a lovely view and with various accessible sites to visit nearby.

The cottage was lovely as were the grounds and setting, we couldn't have had a more perfect location for our holiday. We would thoroughly recommend it and will hopefully be retuning soon.
