About this property

Harlem Hideaway Parlor apartment

***PLEASE CONTACT ME DIRECTLY to discuss flexibility with booking options if you are not able to select the days you would like to stay.

Your own private Harlem hideaway. A quiet dreamy oasis for your busy New York stay. Enjoy life in an 1895 brownstone in one of the city's most charming historic neighborhoods. NOTE: This is just one of three unique units in the building. We also have a Garden Apartment and a Studio Apartment.

The Parlor is a fully furnished one bedroom apartment. It is on the 1st floor of a landmarked private brownstone townhouse in the Mount Morris Historic District in the most coveted area of Harlem.

This apartment features 12' ceilings, modern furnishings and professionally designed accents. All lights are on dimmer switches to provide an intimate setting. There is a video buzzer/intercom system for guest entry.

The living room has a 46'' swing-out, wall mounted LED smart flat screen television and DVD player as well as a remote control radio/iPod player with a playlist of blues and jazz. Wireless Internet access is also provided. The huge mirrored wood decorative fireplace creates a dramatic focal point. Enjoy sitting in the vintage fully adjustable government-issued dentist chair. The leather sofa folds out to become a super comfortable memory foam queen-size bed, the highest quality available. Original built-in shutters fold out for privacy as well as light control. But the huge south facing windows provide an iconic street view under the spreading honey locust tree canopy and it is a beautiful sight to see.

The custom dining table off of the kitchen seats 4 and has an adjustable light above it.

The kitchen features stainless steel appliances: large refrigerator with auto ice maker, dishwasher, four burner gas range with oven and a built-in microwave/fan. Also provided are a blender, toaster, coffee maker, dishes and flatware, glassware and mugs, knife set, cooking pots and pans and utensils. There are plenty of cabinets and under-counter lighting. Dishwasher detergent is provided, as well a filtered water pitcher.

The washer and dryer are next to the bathroom. Detergent is provided. The cabinet next to it holds bedding, extra towels, an iron as well as plenty of storage space.

The all white subway tiled bathroom has a vintage claw-foot bathtub with shower option, as well as hamper, hair dryer, timer exhaust fan, hairspray and room spray in the cabinet. A vintage towel rack and vintage art deco mirror add charm. The ceiling light is dimmable.

The bedroom is accessible though beautiful sliding pocket doors with intricate original woodwork above. The art deco wood wardrobe has ample size as well as drawers and trouser hangers. Original wood wainscoting and fireplace add charm to the bedroom. The memory foam queen bed features a vintage reading light and is next to the window, providing gentle garden breezes. A variable speed overhead fan adds to the luxury. The large windows also house original fold-out shutters for privacy, although you will love the view of the beautiful private garden below nestled under sheltering birch trees.

You also have access to the beautifully landscaped shared backyard or you may prefer sitting out on the main stoop out front.

Have a larger party or prefer a smaller unit? Check out Harlem Hideaway Studio, on the same floor (Home Away # 982538). Or you could also try the large Garden Apartment (Home Away #3634519) that sleeps two.

Fantastic apartment in a great neighborhood
We really enjoyed our stay in the apartment. It has everything you need for a month's stay, including a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a fast internet connection. The apartment is both beautifully designed and very comfortable. The location is great, right in the middle of Harlem, and staying here offers a unique opportunity to explore local culture, history and architecture. It's close to Central Park and there are several subway stations nearby with fast connections to other parts of Manhattan. The host Dennis is very helpful and responsive, and as fans of design and architecture, we really appreciated learning more from him about this beautiful building. Altogether a fantastic experience!

Amazing authentic experience
Absolutely loved the apartment and Harlem ! A beautiful brownstone , traditional , New York building with so much character and style .Every creature comfort was provided and we ( including 18year old son ) loved it ! Harlem is a fantastic area to stay and felt perfectly safe exploring .Commute into city centre is so easy , only about 19 mins to Times Square on the tube .Wish we had more time to explore the immediate area but did get to experience a gospel chapel service which was great .Good eating places nearby as well .Would live to return and would definitely stay here again .Thanks Dennis for a fantastic New York experience .

Parlour in Harlem Hideaway
Great apartment very comfortable and full of quirky things. Every effort made to giver the holiday maker wonderful experience. Good restaurants all within walking distance of the apartment. The 7 day subway pass a must and a bargain. However it would have been helpful to have instructions for the excellent electrical appliances (so different from the UK ones). Also a slip mat in the bath just to prevent any accidents when showering. Overall a superb holiday was had by both of us

About the host

Host profile image
An enthusiastic New York and Harlem resident, always ready to give the inside scoop and recommendations on Harlem or NYC. Very involved in the neighborhood. Creator and part owner of the very popular Harlem Shake restaurant just a few blocks away. A product, landscape and interior designer with numerous awards and items in national museums. In fact, the building has also been published in several magazines and appeared in films. A world traveller, as I flew for Pan Am for over 7 years.

Why they chose this property

This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.

What makes this property unique

The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park.
I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
