Updated: 23-Nov-2016
Classic 200 year old Tuscan Olive Mill completely renovated in 2015

Stylish and chic, this 200 year old converted olive mill is privately situated on an idyllic 9 acre working olive estate with 540 olive trees and a recently established vineyard with 500 newly planted vines. Until the late 1960's the Frantoio pressed the olives from the surrounding estate employing many local villagers. For decades after it closed, the olives groves lay untended and the building became a ruin. The building was initially renovated into 4 luxury apartments and after an extensive renovation in 2015 has now been converted into one luxurious house which can only be rented by one group of up to a maximum of 12 people at any one time. The estate has gradually and carefully been brought back to life, the olive groves which are organic once again produce the renowned Lucchese Olio D'Oliva - one of the finest extra virgin olive oils in Italy and a new vineyard was planted in the Spring which will start to produce wine ready to bottle in 2018. The Frantoio has been painstakingly renovated to a very high standard and is now a most charming, warm and welcoming home with many original features. A truly fantastic stay

  • 5 of 5

The Frantoio is an amazing place, even better than the photos suggest. From the beautiful views from the terrace and the swimming pool to the extremely well appointed and luxurious rooms, everything makes you feel like you have found a gem.

Linda and George are incredibly lovely hosts who really make sure that the guests feel welcome.

There were 11 of us in the house and we all agreed that this was one of the best holidays we ever had. In fact the only down side was that we were so comfortable and happy in the house that we were reluctant to leave even to visit the surrounding towns, although I know from previous visits that they are worth tearing yourself away from the pool for a few hours.

Amazing!!

  • 5 of 5

George and Linda were fabulous hosts! They bent over backwards to meet your needs.

They were a wealth of knowledge about the region's towns, restaurants, nearby grocery shopping and

a fabulous pizza place.

The house was incredible. It was even better than the pictures. I would highly recommend this property.

Linda arranged for a cooking lesson and dinner by local housewives. They were incredible. The best meal that we have

ever eaten.

We will definitely return. It would be hard to duplicate this experience.

A house with true five star detail in a beautiful location perfect for groups.

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful villa in the most gorgeous of settings making the most of the beautiful Italian landscape. The house is renovated to an extremely high standard with an eye for detail from the well tended gardens to the house furnishings straight from a high end magazine. The photos on owners direct truly do not do this property justice.

Linda and George provide perfect unobtrusive care and there local knowledge made our stay absolutely perfect. We ate were Italian foodies eat and would never have found these restaurants without their local knowledge and guidance.

We stayed as an extended family group of 9 with a teenager and a younger boy. The pool was a big hit and there was enough space to eat and sit together or to have space on your own.

We would all stay again at this lovely property and would happily recommend to others.

Beautiful house, ideal for large family holiday

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house with plenty of room for 10-12 adults living together. Six good bedrooms and plenty of room for eating together. We had a list of places we planned to visit, but we enjoyed relaxing, cooking and eating together on the terrace outside the house even more than going out. The pool is very good, with sun and shade around it. Panoramic views. Beautifully renovated house, very well equipped, everything in great working order including quiet and effective a/c in bedrooms. Food shops a short drive away. George and Linda had everything looking stunning when we arrived and very helpful whenever needed. All in all a 5 star place for a holiday.

Wonderful Tuscan Villa

  • 5 of 5

Frantoio is a wonderful conversion of an old Olive Mill into a large and extremely comfortable 6 bedroom villa. It is luxuriously appointed and fitted with every amenity, top class machines and kitchen equipment. We could not have asked for better. It is situated on a hillside with the most spectacular views from both the house and the pool. Our grown-up family and their friends thoroughly enjoyed their stay and the ability to have their own space within the villa. Lucca, Pisa and Florence were all within easy travelling distance enabling us to both relax at the villa and see the local sights. Linda and George look after the property superbly well, were hugely welcoming and looked after us as well, sharing their extensive local knowledge. We could not have had a better week. I would recommend Frantoio very highly to all family and friends.

The perfect hideaway for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot really justify how pleased we were to have found this wonderful villa in Tuscany and to spend a week enjoying with the whole family, everything it had to offer. Linda and George were the perfect hosts and made our stay so enjoyable. Their knowledge of the area and their kindness in making sure we were happy just cemented are feeling that we had definitely made the right choice.

The decor in the villa was beautiful and there wasn,t one thing we would have wanted to change.

This was a holiday that holds many special memories from the fantastic views to the special meal cooked for us by local chefs , Valentino and Larissa which linda and George helped us organise. The pool was amazing and perfect for children and adults alike. We didn,t travel far from our holiday home but those that could pull themselves away from the villa enjoyed trips to Pisa , Lucca and up into the mountains. But there,s no need to go anywhere!

Thank you Linda and George, we,ll be back!

Location

From the Owner

Stunning countryside location amidst ancient olive groves yet conveniently situated to easily reach Lucca, Florence, Pisa, Siena, Chianti, Cinque Terre, Forte di Marmi, Garfagnana,Thermal Springs and major shopping outlets. The location gives you a chance to recharge your batteries with beautiful sunrises and is positioned on the side of a Tuscan hill with views over woodland, olive and cypress trees down to the valley below. It has been recently renovated to a very high standard, bedrooms all have air conditioning. Stunning new pool with amazing panoramic views , outer uniquely designed shallow pool area suitable for young children and a feature waterfall. It is surrounded by landscaped gardens and grassed relaxation area with sunloungers. BBQ - gas and charcoal barbeques. The surrounding countryside and villages are very traditional, life around here is lead at a slower pace with time to stop and chat at a local bar or do some daily shopping at one of the many local markets. Stay here and you will experience the real Tuscany, a bit off the tourist track but yet close enough to Lucca, Florence and Pisa.

One of the most popular modes of transport in our area is the three wheeler Ape or Piaggio, normally laden with vegetables or olives. The restaurants all within 15 minutes drive offer good food and value, frequented by local people they range from more simple Pizzerias and Trattorias to very good gourmet Restaurants.

Montecarlo our nearest wine town (8k) is a medieval hill village surrounded by vineyards, many of which offer wine tastings. There are a number of good restaurants in town where you can enjoy a lunch and glass or two of local wine or an evening meal after afternoon of wine tasting.

Lucca is only 15 to 20 minutes by car. One of the most beautiful Tuscan towns with fine architecture, the 4km of well preserved walls surround a medieval centre with a labyrinth of interesting streets to explore, Romanesque churches, museums and piazzas lined with cafes to watch the world go by. There is only limited residential car access within the walls which helps to create a nice relaxed atmosphere for walking or cycling. Music festivals, great variety of shops, excellent cafes and restaurants, hire a bicycle for a few hours and cycle round the wide tree road round the boundary walls joining the people of Lucca in their daily exercise.

Castelvecchio di Compito - our local village with a bar and pizzeria/trattoria. There is a little farm with a small shop where they make fresh ricotta and pecorino.

Buti - local village (5-10 mins)with restaurants, bars and local shops. Palio in January.

Orentano - little hamlet (5 mins) with 2 good trattoria/pizzerias and a few shops. Pizza festival in summer months.

San Leonardo in Treponzio - town (10-15 mins) with supermarket, restaurant, bank, pizzeria, pharmacy and hairdressers.

The Frantoio is ideally situated for all the major sightseeing areas in Tuscany. Within 1 hour you can reach Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Garfagnana, Volterra, San Gimignano, Montetcatini and Montesumano Terme, Forte di Marmi, Viareggio, Livorno and the Tuscan Coast. Within 2 hours you can reach Siena, Arezzo, The Cinque Terre, the Val D'Orcia whose landscape has been chosen for many films including Gladiator and the English Patient with the famous Brunello wine town of Montalcino and Pienza voted one of the most beautiful towns in Italy and famous for Pecorino cheese. The Mountain region of the Garfagnana covered in chestnut forests and renowned for local produce, Chianti and the rolling hills with vineyards and quaint medieval towns of Greve, Radda and Castellina in Chianti.

Various local trails for hill walking and mountain biking. Buti has a grade 4 via Ferrata and for more climbing or challenging mountain walks, canyoning, horse riding and climbing in the outdoor adventure sports area of the Garfagnana and the Apennine Mountains.

Nearby there are two outdoor olympic swimming pools with lanes, communal gymnasium, tennis courts and freshwater lake with sandy beach, WWF nature reserve for birdwatching.

Many good local restaurants in the area from simple trattorias and pizzerias to fine dining and michelin starred. We can help with recommendations and reservations.
