Mosquito screens in all bedrooms.

extended terrace with covered loggia with plenty of garden furniture, some sun beds and outdoor grill, and a spectacular roof-top terrace , magnificent views onto the surrounding hills, forests and meadows, 2 community parking lots on-site.

As most really old farm houses and hamlets - Poderi Val Verde - Farmhouses in the Green Valley - was built in a large, open, sun-filled valley, thus protected from cold north winds and wet fogs, ventilated by warm south winds in the afternoon, with pleasant cool night temperatures due to the surrounding macchia and woods and with unlimited supplies of fresh well water.

The famous ancient “mules trail” passed through here – mules transported salt from the salt mines of sicily to the north – trails that always followed the course of water and wells and developed into important traffic venes. Prove of this are the many monastries and cloisters and farm houses that you find along this old trails, which are also part of our trekking “network”.

Here you can spend your dream vacation – right in the heart of Tuscany – the Chianti Classico”

- only a few miles from Florence and Siena – in a region of vineyard covered hills, silvery olive groves, vast forests and colourful macchia slopes - and admidst hidden ancient farm houses guarded by cypresses and towering pine trees

Hidden in the middle of this ever-green valley, but only 500 m from the main road and 5 min drive from the famous wine town of Castellina in Chianti and surrounded by more then 2ha of wellcared parklike garden, olive groves and fruit covered terraces – unlike any other you might find - lies the small hamlet Poderi Val Verde with its 5 houses in 1 of them lives the owner. 1 house is dived in 3 apartments (2-4 Pers.) , 2 more semi-attached houses are 'Casa Pineta (8-13 pers.) + 'Casa Acacia (6-8 pers.) . Separately sits the lovely small villetta 'Casa Capannina ' (4- 6 pers.).

The fenced-in community pool of 6x12 m, filled with purest well water, with extended leisure areas and surrounding gardens as well as sports facilities is open as of mid may until beginning/mid October . During the cooler months you may use the private pool house (not heated) of the property owner, the only of its kind in the area.

'Casa Pineta' is the second oldest house of all. It was built in various steps over a time period of at least 400 years, repeatedly extended as needs for more space arose. Therefore the various levels within the house create a particular flair.

Once it stood separate from the neighboring 'Casa Acacia' - but then the gap was closed - thus creating its stunning, unusual roof terrace. At the beginning of the 19th century the bread oven with vault ceilings was added, which we houses the archery office.

This house, like all others, was constructed with quarystones by the farmers when clearing woodlands and macchia slopes to prepare land for vineyards and olivegroves .Stones that traditionally were use for building houses or terrassed-walls. Its original use was as living quarters for the farmers and workers. Prove of this give the typical ceilings, built with handcut oak beams, some of the original cottofloors, narrow doors, the old fireplace that people used to literally sit in to warm themselves, the original sandstone sink and many more little signs, that we shall gladly point out to you. Stair and doors sills of local grey sandstone show obvious signs of wear - signs that thousands of feet leftover the last few hundred of years.

All large farmhouses were renovated 15 years ago and retouched in 2014 , but the typical Tuscan structure of old oak beam ceilings and terracotto floors remained intentially untouched. All rooms are handpainted in the typical warm colours of a Tuscan country home : shades of yellow, orange and green. this and some pieces of typical 'arte povera' furnitures give you the feeling of living in an ambiente of ...once upon the time ....

All rental units of Poderi Val Verde - Farmhouses in the Green Valley - are intentionally rustic – with original fire places, old cotto floors and roof beams, their roofs, window and door fixtures and many little architectural particularities mark centuries of living in this place. We are fully aware that with this we are going against the usual main stream of modern design in old walls , but we want to keep this place special and authentic hoping that our guests appreciate our efforts. .

When you step into our accommodations – you seem to step back into the past – rooms , setting and furnishing are according to the “Arte Povera” – as it used to be – as you saw it in films such as “Under the Tuscan Sun” or in “Romeo and Juliette” - but functional as in any modern house. Shady rose-covered loggias and sunny terraces with nice views are part of this all.

All houses and apartment have their own private terrace, each equipped with barbecue and plenty of garden furnitures. Naturally a valley. even as vast as ours, can not offer miles of views , but guests still consider the view onto olive groves and terraces, forests and meadows as well as the macchia particular. Only there you may see boars, deer or other wild game as near as 100 m .

And its protect position offers warmer temperatures, cool afternoon breezes and protection from the freezing Tramonta winds that make swimming and outside sitting on hill-top positions often impossible. Its close surrounding green environments is responsible for the cool night temperatures, the Chianti Classico hills are famous for. And wait until you see our clear night sky . When was the last time you saw a shooting star or fireflies?

Enjoy the sunset in complete silence from your terrace, garden furniture, sun beds as well as a bbq. Gaze onto onto the extended gardens, the romantic creek and the surrounding meadows and vast macchia covered hills of this private property of more then 76 ha. Start your hiking and biking directly form your doorsteps on well marked trails.

Just returned from a fabulous two week trip to Tuscany. Stayed at Poderi Val Verde for one week . Owner, Ulrike, is a pleasure to deal with. She is very organized and detail oriented. READ YOUR CONTRACT CAREFULLY! Everything is spelled out there so you won't meet with any surprises. The property is beautiful ... a farm just about 12 miles north of Siena and only about one mile out of the town of Castellina in Chianti. (It is also about an hour and a half drive from Florence.) Very convenient to the hill towns of Volterra, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, and all of the towns along the Chianti road. The apartment (La Bellavista) is very comfortable with a large living room (sofa bed) and a bedroom with very adequate furnishings. Great shower and good kitchen facilities.

Only drawback, you have to walk up one flight of stone stairs from the private patio and entrance to reach the living space. There is no air conditioning, but the nights were very cool and NO BUGS. We slept with all of the windows wide open and never had a problem although we were there during an extremely hot and humid week. In fact at night, I sometimes had to wear a light jacket!

Take advantage of the welcome dinner; it includes wine. Ulrike is a great cook and the price is very reasonable for the region.

In the morning you will hear Ulrike's roosters crowing. I was not bothered by them, but my husband found them rather annoying. Other apartments on the property face away from their location and therefore are not heard as much.

Nearby Amenities

Castellina is close enough to walk to, but the road is windy, narrow and steep. It has a Coop Supermarket and we drove there to do our shopping. There are several good restaurants in the town, including the very expensive Ristorante Gallopapa. Many good shops for souvenirs, clothing and wine and of course a wonderful gelateria!

The House/Apartment

There are about seven or eight other apartment rentals on the property, each of differing sizes and layouts. Although the buildings date back to the early 1900s, the apartments have been modernized and are in excellent condition. If there is any problem, Ulrike or her assistant, Mirella, attend to it immediately.

Garden

There is one beautiful pool for all of the guests to use and the property has a volleyball net, ping pong table and soccer goal nets set up so that you or your kids can play. La Bellavista has a private patio with a table for fou

Val Verde - an authentic Chianti estate from the 16th century – located within walking distance (only 3 km) of the wine town of Castellina in Chianti and within 1 hours or less drive to most famous sights of Tuscany. Poderi Val Verde is a real “living” farm – with farm and court yard animals in the rare surrounding and live style of “once up the time” combined with modern comfort.

Its a place for the individual travellers, looking for something different – for the feeling of solitute, peace and untouched nature. For people that like good original food (on-site dinners and cookery classes) and good wines.

For families because of its outdoors activities for children on the playground such as soccer, basket ball, volley ball, ping pong, sand box etc. not to speak of the fun they may have feeding the chicken or sheep and lambs or caressing our dogs and cats. All this will make you forget time and stress.

Its also a place for dedicated archers or future archers that will enjoy our lessons and courses (long bow and recurve) or want to try their skills out on our 3d archery range, the only one of its kind in Tuscany and the Chianti hills.

Its perfect for people that like to explore the country side by bike or by foot and next to visiting the countless cultural sights will also find time to attend one of the many cultural events such as opera, concerts, exhibitions etc.

For people that include in their itinerary a visit to the many Thermal springs and spas as well as the beaches and marble caves of the Versiglia.

For people that enjoy travelling in the colder months when Tuscany seems to hibernate into the past. When in restaurants you find only locals and tourists are greeted with a open welcoming smile , museums and other cultural places are empty and the Chianti belongs to only you.

When the air is heavy with the smell of the many fire places, the new young wine , the freshly pressed olive oil, grilled game meat and the famous bistecca .

Poderi Val Verde (Farmhouses in the green valley) was restored in 1998 ,retouched in 2012 and refurnished in 2014. The setting is itentially rustic – authentic - with original fire places, cotto floors, beams, roofs and many little architectural particularities that mark centuries of living in this place. We are fully aware that with this we are going against the usual main stream of modern design.

Its surrounded by extended leisure areas and gardens as well as sports facilities. Due to the fact that each accommodation has its own terrace with garden furniture the pool area will never be crowed. During the cooler months you may use the a small covered (not heated) pool of the property owner, the only of its kind in the area.

Attention 'snowbirds' !!!! - Tuscany offers pleasant temperatures, low rates, all major Italian sights within 1 days drive, hot springs and spa, dining and wining at its best

From the Owner

there are few places that are so central to everything, and offer so much - located only 500 m from the main road but in absolute silence of the surrounding nature (the only nature preserve area in the Siena region) - you are closed to most important sights and places of Tuscany - 5 min to the next town, so social contacts are guaranteed - less then 1 hours from the next major airport (Florence) so getting here is no problem - fantastic marked trekking trails starting from your doorstep (stunning nature in winter or spring) , biking of the finest (on the tracks of the Giro d'Italia, 3D archery ranges (WBHC 2017), golfing with the elite, or simply enjoying a glass of wine, some pecorino cheese on your personal patio, watching deer and wild boar pass by, Tuscan eagles soaring above this magnificant privately owned valley - what can one ask more for

Notes:

  • New!!!!! sky and star watching in new observatory only 6 km from us - not only children will love it!! English, German + Italian speaking owner lives on site. Location: a tiny hamlet 500 m from main road - no long rides on dusty country roads. next town Castellina in Chianti (only 3 km) shopping + dining is easy - one may even walk there - zip into town for a coffee break or some of the best ice-cream of the area Some thoughts : isolated houses in hill positions may suffer from water shortage in summer + gusty winds in spring + autumn, shortening the pool season. Our protected position, typical for real old houses + the many wells help us avoid either also during thunderstorms, electrical failures are not uncommon, but due to the closeness to town we profit from its priority rating. Pool: there are so many sights to visit + things to do, most guests take off early in the morning = pool + leisure area are often deserted - small covered private pool for eventual low season swimming
