Perfect Tuscan villa

  • 5 of 5

My family and I absolutely loved this villa, such a beautiful property with amazing hilltop views. All the double rooms have fantastic views but the pool was the absolute highlight! So refreshing after a hot day of sightseeing! The only negative of this property is the drive up the hill. It's pretty challenging the first couple of time but gets better after a bit more practice. Overall would definitely recommend

Great stay

  • 4 of 5

The house is situated on a hill and provides a beautiful view. The road to the house is very steap. Specially the first time it is a bit difficult (definitaly for larg cars) but you get used to it. The kitchen and the kitchen equipment are rather basic, but all the other rooms and the garden are really very comfortable. We had a very nice stay here and would definitaly recommend this house.

Unforgettable stay

  • 5 of 5

Located slightly away from main Tuscany tourist locations turned into a bonus as it created a very relaxed holiday, lended us to visit unheard of but almost as equally historic and beautiful closer villages.

Returning to La Fortezza for a refreshing swim, dinner outside courtesy of a BBQ or pizza oven 'experience', followed by supper on the top deck.

La Fortezza was plenty large enough for the 2 families (10 of us). Took quite a few days to get around all of the house and grounds.

Booking, arrival and on the ground service was great (great restaurant recommendations).

The access road: two cars fared predictably. The shorter Citreon Scenic had no problem - our longer Ford S-Max also made it up, at first challenging, but by the end without any issues. I did need the full 2.5l engine, though to get up the inclines.

In hindsight, should have stayed 2 weeks, and in another life could easily spend a whole summer. After 3 previous trips to Tuscany, I think this one really identified with the Tuscan experience that I had perceived from books and films.

Very good, actually better than pictured

  • 5 of 5

Nice, large house with ample space for the six in our party. Lovely location with great views, although the view comes at the price of a narrow, twisting road (so be advised to rent small cars, ideally with four wheel drive). Overall good standard and we didn't really lack anything. Also, good communication with owner prior to stay. Highly recommended.

Our Stay at La Fortezza in July 2010

  • 5 of 5

We were a family group of twelve, 2 grandparents, 4 parents and 6 children aged ten to sixteen. On arriving quite severely delayed (7 hours wait in Manchester Airport) and additional hassle at the Pisa airport car hire pickup and then heading the wrong way on the autoroute, our first impressions were of an exciting trek up a steep mountainside; the dark, the evening heat, cicada chirping and the seeming precipitous drops adding to the sense of adventure as we finally reached our destination. We'd phoned ahead to warn Paul, but our ETA had been way off. He was there with a friendly greeting to show us around the wonderful villa, warm smile and helpful advice despite having had to hang around for several hours. The memory of the tired but excited children running down to try out the starlit pool, brushing up waves of heady scent though the lavender avenue on their way, is one which will stay with us a very long time.

The property suited us perfectly. The views across, up and down the valley from the garden, the eating terrace and the pool with its stout timber deck are simply exceptional. We fell in love with the olive groves and the steeply wooded hillsides, indulging in the idle holiday fantasy that we had arrived to stay and could look forward to leisurely marking the effects of the changing seasons on our beautiful surroundings.

To the more prosaic, our three 5-door Fiat Panda hire cars made easy work of the hairpin bends up the approach track and we were soon swinging around the steep corners through the groves with the nonchalant confidence of the locals.

The villa has been elegantly improved from its former life as a farmhouse. The standard of fittings like the joinery of the purpose-made internal doors, the external doors, windows and integral shutters spoke of an impressive level of quality, set at default. Cool tiled floors and lime-washed rendered rooms with exposed joists and beams, massive thick external walls and an ingenious layout down the hill's slope of three levels containing the 6 bedrooms and living spaces all made the house a pleasure to be in and explore. Wherever you looked there seemed to be nooks of books or semi-secret places to sit and chat, enjoy that view (again) or soak up the sun on a surprise roof balcony. We were intrigued by the way an outcrop of the hillside's rock back had been formed into the wall of the lower sitting room. We loved firing up the pizza oven, we loved eating outside. Please, when can we go back?

La Fortezza - Great holiday

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we had a great holiday in La Fortezza.

The accommodation was of a good standard, and clean. We were able to make good use of the pool and BBQ facilites. The view from the villa was excellent, and one of the best bits of the holiday.

The owner gave good customer service, and Paul the local manager was helpful and friendly.

The negative was the drive up to the villa. This was a 1mile up hill drive, with steep/sharp bends. The last part was on a dirt track. It was a bit tricky, and I definately wouldn't recommend trying it at night - especially on the first evening. Also, some might find it too difficult - and it's quite far to walk! Best done in a small car.

The drive was a negative, but overall, the villa makes up for it. Views were excellent, and we cooked in most nights - using good facilites.

I would recommend this property to a friend.

La Fortezza is located in an ideal place in the hills above Pescia. It provides a tranquil scenic peaceful setting with an abundance of nature whilst still being only 5 minutes drive from the town. It is also within the 'golden triangle' of Lucca, Pisa and Florence - perfect for day trips. After a long day sight seeing there is nothing better than watching the sun set over the medieval hilltop villages with a glass of the local vino.
