Villa in a charming medieval village in the heart of La Provence Verte

Updated: 13-Nov-2016
3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Situated in France's Provence-Verte region in the medieval village of Entrecasteaux approximately 1 hour's drive from the coast, stands this well appointed traditional / modern Provencal villa. The property is South facing built in the traditional 'L' shaped style around a very large patio which incorporates a heated pool of 9 x 4 meters, shaded terraces and a delightful outside dining area. Ground floor- large living/dining room with fireplace, fitted kitchen,2 bedrooms (1 twin and 1 double), bathroom with bath/shower and WC. Separate WC. All downstairs rooms have French windows onto the patio. First floor - master bedroom (double), which is en-suite and with a small balcony.

The property enjoys an elevated, sheltered position, surrounded by pine trees and olives, where a family or group of six can enjoy in peace and privacy the beautiful Provencal countryside, yet it is only a ten minute walk down into the village.

Location: The property is approximately 1 hour's drive from the beaches of Ste Maxime and St Tropez and the cities of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. International airports include Marseille (1 hour), Nice (1 hour) and Toulon-Hyeres (1hour).

Activities: The property offers a perfect base for exploring Provence and the Cote d'Azur. There are numerous local markets, vineyards and restaurants. Local attractions include the Abbaye du Thoronet, and the waterfall of Sillans La Cascade (20 mins away). The Lac Ste Croix and the fabulous Gorges du Verdon (The Grand Canyon of Europe) with its many activities including, sailing, white water rafting, kayaking, boating and swimming are only 1 hour's drive away.

Hello David

I just wanted to thank you for the use of your fabulous villa over half term. We had a fantastic holiday, not least because it was unexpectedly hot and sunny every day and the pool was warm, just as you promised. The villa was wonderful and well kitted out- the kids were delighted to have satellite TV to argue over and that gave us some peace and quiet too (not to mention the chance to watch Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares after dinner one night- bliss!)

The village was beautiful.

Many thanks again.

Hello David

We have arrived home (reluctantly) after two fantastic weeks in your villa. We absolutely loved the villa (as you said we would) and were extremely impressed with the comfort, presentation and how well equipped it was. The villa certainly has real “homely” feel to it unlike many other rental properties and we settled into it within 5 minutes!

Beautiful Provence

  • 5 of 5

This is a delightful property. It feels like a home rather than a holiday villa. The lounge opening out onto the pool area is a lovely feature and enabled us to keep an eye on the Wimbledon mens final while nipping out for more sun and swims when play was interrupted by rain.

The owner, Martin, was extremely helpful in our preparations for our holiday.

The property is looked after by Lenny, an English expat, who also runs the Entrecasteaux Cricket Club and who is a mine of useful information.

The property is situated on the top of a pine clad hill which is full of birds and cicadas. It is about a half mile walk down the lane (a steep pull back up!) to the delightful village of Entrecasteaux where the boulangerie sells excellent bread and croissants.

This is a beautiful part of Provence with steep wooded valleys and plenty of vineyards and it is about an hour's drive to the amazing Gorges de Verdon.

All in all a wonderful holiday. This villa is ideal for lazing by the pool or as a centre for visiting the beautiful Var area.

Owner's Response: The following review pleases me enormously. Provence is a beautiful part of the world and although the South Coast can be rather crowded in the summer, 35 miles inland remains tranquil and full of character. The surrouding villages have hardly altered in my 25 years of holidaying in Entrecasteaux. My children and grand children all enjoy our holidays in Provence. If you want a holiday that is relaxing and where you can get far from the "madding crowd". Visit the region and see for yourselves, you will not be disappointed.

The house is wonderful! The various bedrooms are lovely and waking up to a view out to the pool and sun is fabulous! The pool is amazing and on hot days it is just what you need. Being situated away from the main roads it is very peaceful, but it is only a short walk down a lovely back route to the village of Entrecasteux where there are great restaurants and the atmosphere is very enjoyable! The house itself is equipped with everything you would need, the BBQ is wonderful and many evenings were spent having late night meals under the amazing stars. Having been to the villa 3 or 4 times I can definitely say that it is as astounding as ever and I cannot wait to go back again. The pool is luxurious when the weather becomes too much but it is always sunny and when it gets too hot, the house is always cool and refreshing! The geckos around the area are fascinating to watch! I cannot wait to go back and would strongly recommend staying in this family villa and relaxing!

Beautiful home in Idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely villa in an idyllic location. Fabulous pool (kept in sparkling condition by weekly visits from pool man Andree) and huge terrace with comfortable and stylish cane furniture. Perfect to while away the lovely days in the sun - lots of shade too.

The 'home from home' house was very clean and well appointed - looked after by Ruth, locally - who was on hand to explain the workings of the house.

This was the most peaceful and relaxing holiday we have ever had.

Can really recommend this property - great value too. We will be going back for sure.

Lots to do in surrounding areas - there was a good listing of markets, restaurants and things to do, at the house which was really useful.

Beautiful Provence (again)!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second holiday at this delightful property: see our review

of our 2008 stay.

As previously noted this is a delightful family home with a welcoming lived-in feel; a pleasant change from villas from villa rental companies which so often lack character. Yes, a few cracked tiles etc but this is just part of normal wear and tear and did not detract from our enjoyment.

Having not been well for a few weeks prior to our holiday it was great

to spend lazy days by the pool and recuperate. We did manage a few days

out including the Massif des Maures (Grimaud a delightful village) and

Lac St Croix (a good lakeside beach area and swimming at the village of

St Croix). Return via Quinson to enjoy the lavendar fields on the

The local rose wine is well recommended (try the Caves de l'Amiral in

Entrecasteaux and the Domaine de Roucas on the road to Carces) and there are a number of good and reasonably priced restaurants in the area (we had good meals at La Fourchette in Entrecasteaux and La Terrasse in Cotignac (excellent lunchtime fixed price menu at €14 each).

The mid-stay clean and change of bedding was welcome. Being in a wooded

area the pool and surrounding area fills with a fair amount of debris

and insects and a more frequent clean would have been welcome, but

otherwise no suggestions for improving the great experience of another

holiday at this property. Highly recommended.

Glorious, restful and idyllic

  • 5 of 5

We have visited this villa twice now, and are already booked in for 2011! The location is utterly idyllic (unless you are looking for a 'Butlins style' break because you certainly won't find a red-coat here!) with everything you could want to make this a true home-from-home experience.

The outdoor covered BBQ area is great fun for those fabulous warm summer evenings and I have to say that turning the pool lights on when it gets dark and 'taking it all in' at the end of a hard day still takes our breath away.

On a slightly more practical note, the ceiling fans in the rooms are a fantastic addition to this very well thought out (and I have to say, well maintained) property.

We have 2 children aged 12 who adore exploring the woodlands (is it my fault they believe there might be treasure hidden there?!) and playing in the pool. There is sky tv for those desperate moments (of which I'm delighted to say we have had none!) and the food and wine in both the village and surrounding areas are superb.

Thankyou so much for our many holiday memories - we can't wait to make some more!

Family Holiday

  • 2 of 5

The villa is in an excellent postion surrounded by pine trees close to the village of Entrecasteaux.

The villa had plenty of space inside and out but we were disappointed with the interior especially the kitchen and main bathroom which needed updating.

The terrace outside and pool area was also disappointing with broken floor tiles and mosaic tiles falling off the pool wall. The outside wicker chairs also need updating.

Owner's Response: It was with dismay that we read this review (made after their holiday) of our villa. It has been a long and very hot summer resulting in broken tiles on the terrace and mosaics within the pool. These have already been replaced. We disagree that the interior of the villa (which is in traditional country style), needs updating and indeed we have had many positive compliments about the interior. We pride ourselves that any complaint will be dealt with immediately by our manager of many years standing.

Entrecasteaux is located 25km north-east of Brignoles.

Built on a rocky elevation it is one of the prettiest villages in the region and has kept its original charm that goes back to the XI century. The Chateau in the centre of the village was built in the XVI C on the ruins of an XI C fort and boasts a garden designed by Le Notre (who set out the gardens of Versailles). The old paved streets, lined with tall and narrow village houses, complete the picture of an unspoilt medieval village
