About the property

5 bedroom Villa

The villa is situated in the Sierra Tejeda mountains overlooking Alcaucin and Lake Vinuela in the Axarquia region of Andalucía. Just inland from the Costa del Sol, this destination is well situated for visiting Malaga, Granada, Seville, Cordoba and Ronda.

The Sierra Tejeda National Park is on your doorstep with uninterrupted views across the valley and La Maroma 2068m. It is an ideal location for country lovers who want to discover the true Spain and laid back Spanish lifestyle. There are numerous sleepy villages to explore nearby, all with their own fiestas. Lake Viñuela is 5 minutes away, there you can hire kayaks and sailboats. Velez-Malaga is the main town of the Axarquia region and is surrounded by avocados & mangoes. Periana another interesting village is famous for their 'Verdial' olive oil and peaches.

Our mountain side villa is set on a plot approximately 1100 sq. mtrs in size and boasts a huge 10 x 5 mtr pool, ample sunbathing and eating areas, outside BBQ and off road parking for a number of cars. There are plenty of different activities available for all ages during your stay at Lake Viñuela Lodge. Various exciting days out are on offer for all of the family from wildlife and water parks to feeding the dolphins at Selwo Marina.

For the adrenaline junkies, a game of paintballing and quad biking are also available. For those who prefer a more relaxing day out, there are numerous peaceful and simple activities from a round of golf at one of the local clubs, horse riding at Los Olivillos to walking and picnics through the National forest, located just behind Lake Viñuela Lodge.

Return Visit

We first stayed in this villa three years ago. This year there were 11 of us. For large groups you simply cannot beat this villa for location, views and space. We had another great relaxing holiday and we will be back again.

Lake Vinuela Lodge - October 2010

  • 4 of 5

The villa is fully equipped and in excellent condition throughout, and there are large patio areas around a good sized (if cold at this time!) pool.

The views are spectacular as are some of the drives in the area.

It is only about 25 minutes from the coast road, but its still best to plan shopping and days out in advance.

Mike and Sue are the agents there and only live a couple of villas away and were helpful when required.

The only minor issue we had was that the site is claimed as wheelchair friendly (and basically it is) but we couldn't get the particular wheelchair in our party through the doors of the downstairs loo or into the downstairs en-suite.

In summary, I would recommend Lake Vinuela Lodge for a peaceful, comfortable holiday.

Return to Lake Vinuela Lodge

  • 5 of 5

It was good to return to the lodge this year as we knew what to expect having had a great week there last year.

The villa is very well equipped and ideal for a large family group with plenty of bathrooms etc. The views are breathtaking and continually change throughout the day. It is a wonderful place to just chill and relax as once you get there you won't want to leave. However, you do need to get orgainsed and buy your food supplies on the way from the airport as there are no shops nearby.

This year we did get out a little bit more, we went up into the national park behind the villa and saw some wildlife and flowers on the way. Some of us even went as far a Granada one day and on another day we all went to Nerja and soaked up the atmosphere.

It was good to be greeted on arrival by Mike, (who looks after the villa with his wife). They live nearby and so are on hand if needed..

We would have no hesitation in recommending the lodge for a relaxing, away from it all type holiday.

Best Holiday Villa Yet: August 2010

  • 5 of 5

This was our eighth villa rental in France and Spain - our fourth in this region - and the best yet. Our party consisted of five adults and four kids aged between 10 and 14, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

The villa is only an hour's drive from Malaga airport along a relatively straightforward route, with the owner's directions making it easy to find. We suggest you buy as much food and drink as you can fit in the car alongside your luggage from the Eroski supermarket at the El Ingenio shopping mall as it is on the roundabout where you turn off the motorway to head up towards the Vinuela reservoir and the mountains, as once you arrive at the villa, you won't want to leave!

The villa is so well-equipped (and with a tv, computer and large, deep pool, not one child complained they were bored), with so much space and such breathtaking views that there really is no need to leave the site except for supplies.

Should you wish to explore a little, however, then we recommend the following: Nerja, a town on the coast further east, and the amazing underground caves nearby (great when you've had enough sun); Frigiliana, just inland from Nerja, one of the best white hilltop villages, with its steep, cobbled, pedestrianised streets and far reaching views; and Torre del Mar with its long beach and promenade, and lots of cheap souvenir shops in which the kids can spend their holiday money. It is also well worth making your way down to the reservoir for a bit of exploring. Last year, when the water level was a lot lower, we found large barbel trapped in shallow pools in one of the rivers that feed the reservoir. We were able to wade upstream amongst the fish in the shade of overhanging trees - it was magical.

As regards eating out, the Rancho Grande in Alcaucin is amazingly good value; El Pantano on the other side of the lake at Los Romanes is a little more expensive but the food is a little more upmarket and the view magnificent; Cantueso, up above Periana, also has fantastic views over the lake and great food, but go in the week when they do special deals - we went on a Sunday and it was quite pricey by local standards.

Lastly, the owner's agent who lives nearby goes about his business of looking after the property quietly and discreetly - but is very knowledgeable and friendly, should you have a question about the area or wish to chat.

All in all, this place is a gem. Book it now!
