About the property

Comfortably furnished, large kitchen, fireplace, 3 bedroom, 3 bath, sleeps 6

This beautifully restored 18th century townhouse is in the lovely village of Uzès, capital of the province of the Gard in southern France. The house is located immediately outside the original medieval town walls and is a two minute walk away from the 12th century market place the Place aux Herbes, which hosts a Provencale market every Saturday. The house was constructed in the 18th century as a gentle men's town house on much older foundations. It was restored by Dr. Patrick Woodcock in the early 80s and has featured in a number of books and documentaries about the region. The house is comfortably furnished with a mixture of contemporary English and 18-19th century French furniture. The roof terrace at the top of the house provides lovely views of the town center and surroundings. There is a lovely shaded walled garden at the back of the house. Both the roof terrace and the garden have large dining tables. Car parking a few minutes walk from the house.

How To Get There: Closest to Uzes are the airports of Nîmes and Montpellier. Direct services from the UK are provided by Ryanair operating out of London Stansted, or British Airways from London Gatwick. Air France provides services from Paris. Car hire services are available from both airports. It takes about 20 minutes to drive from Nîmes and just over one hour from Montpellier. Easyjet flies to Marseile and Toulouse. KLM also operates flights from Amsterdam to Marseille.

Avignon is also served by TGV from both Paris and Marseille. Car hire companies operate in Avignon at walking distance from Avignon Centre railway station. Note that the new TGV station is substantially outside the town. Limited car hire facilities are available in Uzès. It is advisable to book well in advance. Uzès is approximately 30 minutes by car from Avignon.

Things to do: The “Office de Tourisme” is located in Place Albert 1er (next to the Bar de la Fontaine). They have wealth of information about Uzès and the region. The staff are helpful and it worth a visit to view this magnificently restored stone vaulted chapel. Every quarter or so they produce a publication advertising “what’s on”. It is worth checking this out as there are a surprising number of cultural activities which take place over the summer months.

Swimming. There is a 25 meter municipal swimming pool located just outside the center of town on the road (D982) towards Bagnols-sur-Ceze. Pass beneath the Roman arch just below the Promenade des Maronniers, descend the steps and turn sharply to the left. Opening times vary through the year so check with the Office de Tourisme or at the pool itself.

More things to do: Tennis. The Tennis Club d’Uzès has a number of clay courts which can be hired by visitors. The club is located in the same area as the swimming pool. Information and details can likewise be obtained from the Office de Tourisme or the club itself.

Walking. There are a number of attractive walks that can be made around the town. The starting points for most are either in the Parc Municipal below the Parade des Marroniers (same entrance as the swimming pool) or the Chemin de Gisfort which runs off the Boulevard Victor Hugo below the Hopital General. The Parc Municipal contains a football field and a number of exercise points for determined joggers. Remains of the Roman aqueduct which took the water from the spring near Uzès to Nîmes via the Pont du Gard have been partially excavated and are still to be found here.

A wonderful property in a perfect town

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful, spacious and well equipped. The location could NOT be better, with a choice of patisserie and boulangerie to buy breakfast 2 minutes away and the twice weekly market less than 10 minutes away in the beautiful, beautiful Place aux Herbes. The house itself works very well for a holiday that includes the cooking of local produce and enjoying convivial meals around the large table in the wonderful kitchen. Also a great base for visits to Nimes, swimming (and canoeing) at Collias, the steam train from Anduze to St Jean le Gard (via the Bamboozerie). Uzes itself is a wonderful little town with much to see and do (start with the walking tour - map and directions available from the tourist office).

The perfect townhouse!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect for three couples - we had plenty of room to be together and room to be alone. We were steps away from everything we needed. The hosts provided guidebooks, music CD's and stereo system, and hundreds of books for our enjoyment. The kitchen was especially accommodating for six people who like to cook, eat and talk. Next time we'll stay even longer than our one week dream vacation in Uzes.

fantastic house,great location

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful large house. The house description did not do it justices. it was amazing. Very comfortable. It had everything you could possibly need, from sunhats. umbrellas. and enough baskets for us all on market days. The location was down a quiet street but right near the centre of town, which had amazing restaurants, music and of course 2 markets each week. The patisserie was 3 doors away. Couldn't recommend the house enough.

Uzès sits on a limestone hill at an elevation of 130 metres. The Romans converted this natural defensive position into an encampment to defend Nîmes, one of the richest and most important cities in France in Roman times. Springs close by sourced the water which was carried to Nîmes via the famous nearby Pont du Gard. Roman water channels can still be found in the valley next to the river Alzon at the foot of the hill on which Uzès is perched. The skyline of this handsome medieval village is dominated by the eleventh century castle which is still occupied by one of the oldest noble families in France, the Duc d’Uzès. The bishop’s palace was built in the 17th century. The cathedral of Saint Theodorit is decorated with the Tour Fenestrelle, one of the most picturesque romanesque towers in the region. In the centre of the village is a perfectly preserved 12th century market-place, the Place aux Herbes, which hosts one of the prettiest markets in France every Saturday.

Golf: There is a very attractive nine hole golf course at the “Golf Club d’Uzès” a few kilometers outside Uzès. The golf course is available to visitors and is open from 0800 to 1900 every day. Please note that you will have to provide proof of a handicap of 35 or less AND proof of membership of a golf club in your country of residence. Prices are reasonable (euro 20/25 weekday/weekend) and clubs and equipment can also be hired. The course is on the Chemin de Malaric and is well signposted to the right of the D981 from Uzès to Remoulins just before the Pont des Charettes. Telephone 04 66 22 40 03, email golfUzè, web site:ès. Further information is available in the Uzès tourist information folder.
