About this property

CrabShack - Peel Estuary Experience

Location:
Mandurah is a beautiful Western Australian town located on the Peel estuary 72 km south of the Perth CBD. The estuary is a breeding ground for a large variety of bird and marine life but is renowned for its crabs, dolphins and pelicans. Mandurah is a lazy holiday town known for its beaches, fishing, restaurants, scenic walks and outdoor activities.
The Crabshack is a fully rebuilt mid-century timber house offering a lifestyle snapshot of days gone by. Located one street back from one of Mandurah's best crabbing spots on the Coodanup foreshore, you can borrow our scoop nets and have a go for yourself. Its a like a secret hideaway, very quiet streets and a peaceful location, however still within close proximity to beaches, restaurants, shopping malls, boat ramps, Mandurah town-site and fishing.

House Details:
The CrabShack was extensively rebuilt over a two year period. Designed to retain the original character of the house so that it ties into its surroundings. Furnishing has been sourced to compliment the late seventies styling. You'll love the design and attention to detail of the renovation.

The CrabShack provides a lifestyle experience. It boasts a gourmet kitchen with quality appliances and cooking utensils. Entertaining is enhanced by a variety of spaces which lead to an outdoor entertaining area. The rooms are comfortable with inner-sprung matresses, Air-Conditioning, ceiling fans and a cosy wood fire for the winter months.

Guests have free access to a range of bicycles. Crabbing gear and some fishing equipment is available upon request and advice on the best fishing spots is always available to guests. The crabbing season in Mandurah is from December 1st until August 31st but the bigger ones are in mid to late January.
Linen including doona covers, sheets and pillow cases can be provided for an additional fee.

This property is perfect for families. It is very quiet and safe walking distance to the Coodanup foreshore reserve and children's play ground. A large shed and low maintenance rear courtyard offer an area for a barbecue and darts. Although the summer holidays are peak season, my favourite time to stay is early winter. Calm cool nights allow the Crabshack to excel in comfortable living. Sit around the fire, perhaps watch the footy, put your feet up and enjoy how a holiday in mandurah was 25 years ago.

The house sits on a large block where there is ample parking for cars, boats and caravans. There are boat ramps only minutes away which offer easy access to the Peel estuary, the Serpentine and Murray Rivers and the Indian ocean. Mandurah offers a variety of fishing options including deep sea, fresh water, beach, rock and estuary.

Great house in a very quite area
We stayed at CrabShack for an extended weekend with our two doggies. The hosue was nice and clean / as advertised. We ate out but the kitchen seemed to be quite well equipped. The backyard is fairly large and well secured so our doggies really enjoyed exploring it and running around. The neighbourhoord is very quiet so the nights were peacefeul and relaxing and in the morning there were lots of birds singing. There is a nice walkway along the estuary shore that's less than 2 minutes walk from the house that we also enjoyed.

About the host

I grew up in Fremantle WA, the grandson of a Market Gardening family. I grew up in the workshop playing with tools and machines from an early age. I designed things, welded steel, built bikes and dug holes. My friends and I loved to fish and would regularly ride our bikes to the old power station, fremantle traffic bridge, point walter and south beach to catch fish. I was recognised for my abilities in Industrial Arts and won prizes in design and Applied Industrial Arts when at school even though my competence with other subject areas was not as good . I went on to study industrial Arts at University and became an Industrial Arts Teacher specialising in Architecture, building and Construction, Metalworking, Furniture and Jewellery. My first Job was in the Kimberley region of WA and I then travelled to the Goldfields and Gascoyne area with work. This is where i developed my passion for travel but also the simple things in life. My Time in Carnarvon, regularly fishing at the Blowholes lead me to appreciate the simplicity and function of the old shacks. This, inspired me to develop an ATAR Design course which focussed on architecture, the history of furniture and sustainablity. The course was really successful with my students scoring well above the state average. In the mean time we started a young family, A daughter, Hannah (now16) and twin boys Alex and Nicholas (13). The house we call home was not big enough, itself being a small 3x1 timber house on a large block. To save money and reduce our mortgage I took on my first major building project. We still live in that same house but now armed with skills in building and construction.
This is basically how I came the design and build the Crabshack. Within this building you can see a vision and see a life's work in reality

Why they chose this property

I love the area and have lived here for the past 22 years. Its peaceful yet really close to all of Mandurah's amenities. I purchased the old timber and asbestos property 16 years ago. It got to the stage where it was uninhabitable and ready for demolition. In the summer of 2014 I chose to keep the house and fix it properly showcasing my building and design skills. I took a year leave without pay from work and dedicated it to the rebuild and creation of the Crabshack- Peel Estuary Experience. I kept the design faithful to the original house but completely rebuilt it with better layout, living areas, functionality, low maintenance and a rear workshop. With modern appliances and facilities, and careful selection of materials and furnishings, the property is as much a part of me as its surroundings. We invited our first guests in July 2017. You'll love the attention to detail, functionality and location. The kids can play out the front without fear of being hit. You can walk or ride along the estuary with your dog, you can take a quick 5 minute drive into the centre of Mandurah Town or experience our fabulous new Mandurah Forum Shopping Complex.
Every customer is asked to provide a detailed exit survey so that we can continue to improve ammentities. As a result of this valuable feedback we have upgraded the property to include these new features; Toilet exhaust fan, sensor lighting to BBQ area, garden hoses, Darts, new set-top box, more toilet rolls, Tourist information and maps, Secure fencing and side access gate, stick mixer/blender, baking trays, vegie peelers, pet supplies and plastic containers. Throughout winter 2019 we will endevour to upgrade the front garden with a new pathway and look into a wifi infrastructure.
You can't beat the Crabshack for Design, Location, amenities and price. Treat your family to a Peel Estuary Experience, an experience you wont forget.

What makes this property unique

Design, Function, Location and Comfort. Pet and Family friendly, this property has it all at a reasonable price. The house is ultra clean and easy to keep clean. It has period furnishings or funtiture matched to the late 70s styling. Timber floors were retained but solid timber features were added along with modern appliances.
