About this property

The Edge Retreat - Slip away for awhile....

“THE EDGE – RETREAT” ..Slip away for awhile...
(Open Winter Seasons only - June, July, Aug)
The House:
"The Edge Retreat” is a unique house overhanging a granite ridge amongst bushland in the Chittering Valley 50mins North East of Perth. This section of the property, where the land drops away has always been known in our family as “The Edge of the World”, as it enjoys spectacular views East over the Valley.
The house has been specifically designed using Energy Efficient principles, it comprises two pavilions, one Sleeping and one Living, separated by a 3.5m Breezeway Deck and showcases how to “live simply”.
-Living Pavilion contains Kitchen, Meals & Living Rm (Wood Fire, TV, Games, Books)
-Sleeping Pavilion caters for 4 Guests (2 Couples - 2x QS Beds) or 5 if you include the Daybed, a Bathroom, Laundry and Storage Cupboard.
-Campfire Pit (or the “Circle of Truth” - you mustn’t lie when you sit around it)
-Rustic Outdoor Bath-House (2 x Recycled Hot Tubs)

The Lifestyle:
Life is “slow and easy” at The Edge Retreat.
This house is set up for serious chill time so relax, light the fire, enjoy the peace and quiet, go for long walks, visit the local wineries (Stringy Bark Winery within walking distance) Read a book, sit on the Deck amongst the trees, or around the campfire at night, sleep in the swags (on the platform or around the fire) soak in the Outdoor baths, generally get away from the hassles of everyday life. …..Whatever you decide, you will sleep well and be rejuvenated here.

The Area:
The Lower Chittering Valley is 50mins North East of Perth at the Northern end of the Darling Scarp Ranges. The property borders Chittering Road and is a 380 acre working farm of sheep and crops. Natural Bushland consists of Jarrah, Banksia, Red & White Gum Trees, wildflowers and Ancient Grass Trees. The scenery is breath-taking, with undulating hills and an interesting mix of natural bushland, vineyards, orange orchards and wildflowers make it an attractive drawcard for creative minds -artists, photographers, writers etc and the Retreat has be hired occasionally for wellness weekends.
In the interests of sharing this amazing location with others and to ensure minimal disruption to the farm and Bushland, the retreat is open only June, July, August (Winter season), to small groups that we know will appreciate and respect the surroundings.
Note: Put some thought into your food items & supplies –All Supermarkets and Take-away outlets are located 12klms away in the Town of Bullsbrook.

Retreat for tired helpers
From the moment we drove in through the trees we could feel the work week worries dissolving. As medical and psychology professionals we regularly retreat to renew and recharge and care for our own journey as helpers. This is a space with soul and for the soul. Feel so lucky to have found it and to be able to use this clearly much loved home and hearth.

Beautiful house and surroundings
Loved our stay in this beautiful house and its surroundings. Very secluded and comfortable. Spent our weekend enjoying the views from the deck, wandering in the surrounding bushland, sitting around the outdoor fire. Communication with the owner was perfect! We'll definitely come back!

About the host

Hosted by Denise O'Connor

Host profile image
Hi - my name is Denise O’Connor,
I developed an appreciation for nature growing up on this very farm.
I've always been interested in houses, how they are built to overcome site conditions and what factors make us comfortable, so designing houses became my passion and I now specialise in Energy Efficient designs. These homes are a joy to live in and have proven to cost less to run and maintain. All my designs reflect this simple Australian style and "The Edge Retreat" is one such example.

Speaking personally, I like a house to be a place I can retreat,
-It has to be "in tune" with the surrounding landscape and look like it belongs,
-I like it to be small enough to be cosy yet large enough to accommodate friends,
-I like loads of natural light to visibly connect with the changing seasons and I like the spaces to function practically.
-I like the sun to flood in the house in Winter, to have a cool place to retreat in summer, and a sheltered verandah to enjoy the full moon or a good storm.

I'd love to work by the "Whole Concept Approach", that is -to be responsible for all components, placement on site, design layout, interior design, furniture, lighting, colour and landscaping on a project.
Realistically, it is a "rare client" that would allow this, so therefore it was very rewarding to create my own "whole concept" at "The Edge Retreat". This is my special place and it provides all of these things for me, so I hope it gives you the same feeling.

The Build took 18th months. It was about enjoying the process, creating a place that's right for the site and the occupants and one the exudes "great spirit". It was a journey that I enjoyed immensely and it warms my heart to share the magic of The Edge Retreat with other like-minded individuals.

What makes this property unique

The Edge Retreat provides a "Step off" from normal everyday life.
The distinction between inside and out is blurred, natural bushland totally surrounds the house and the central deck is open-ended so you will walk outside when traversing between pavilions.
That outside element makes you feel confronted, refreshed and excited all at the same time. It will "re-set" you not to be in an environment that is always controlled. The outdoor Fire pit, the bathhouse and the raw nature of this setting will re-humanize you and you will be re-invigorated by staying at this magic place.
