Overview

Description

Antica

This spacious country apartment is a superb base for those wanting a holiday that mixes exploring the Tuscan countryside with easy access to Florence city centre. Comfortably welcoming a family or two couples, ANTICA is on two floors and feels like a real home.

It dates back to the 1500s and its sold chestnut beams and terracotta floors are quintessentially Tuscan. Recently renovated, it is comfortable and quietly contemporary, whilst in keeping with its rustic setting. There is space for outside dining with a convenient terrace near the kitchen and the pergola terrace in the garden. Both overlook the vineyards and are perfect for sunny breakfasts or drinks at sunset.

You’ll find memorable countryside to explore on the doorstep. Hilltop Nipozzano is a ten minutes by foot. The timeless elegance of the Nipozzano Villa, country retreat of the noble Frescobaldi family, and rugged Castello dating back to the year1000, encapsulate the beauty and history of Tuscany.

About the property

Borgo di Sopra

Borgo di Sopra is ideal for travelers who want to explore Tuscany and Florence from a base in the beautiful Tuscan countryside.

It is peaceful here. Overlooking gorgeous Chianti Rufina vineyards, it is difficult to believe we are just 30 minutes from central Florence. You wouldn’t even know that the busy town of Pontassieve is close by. Hop on a train from Pontassieve station and you will be in Florence in 25 minutes.

You will need a car to stay here. To reach Borgo di Sopra you take the private vineyard road through the Castello di Nipozzano estate. (By the way, the historic Castle is within walking distance and well worth visiting – we can book you a tasting of their award-winning wines too).

With a maximum capacity of 12 guests, all apartments at Borgo di Sopra have their own private terrace with lovely views across the vineyards. Fittings are fresh and contemporary whilst in keeping with traditional Tuscan country style.

Jane and her husband live onsite and are on hand to provide help with reservations, travel advice and wine tastings.

About Jane

I live at Borgo di Sopra with my family. I am English and my husband is Italian with a lifetime's knowledge of places to visit and eat throughout Tuscany. We are happy to share our knowledge with you and help you get the most out your holiday in this part of Italy. Can we offer you a glass of wine, spread out the map of Tuscany and help you draw up your itinerary?

Jane purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Jane chose Pelago

Borgo di Sopra is a fabulous mix.

You truly feel away from it all, in the midst of a nature in a place of enormous beauty. There is lots of wildlife here, from deer to pheasants, hares, porcupines and all sorts of birdlife.

Our apartments all look out onto the vineyards of the Castello di Nipozzano. These are cared for almost like a garden. It is wondeful to watch the passage of the seasons across them.

Yet, if you get in your car and drive our bumpy stone road and then the leafy country lane, in 6 minutes you find yourself in the bustling town of Pontassieve. Restaurants and shops, banks and the train station - it all feels a world away from our Borgo and yet it is so close.

What makes this apartment unique

At Borgo you can walk uphill to the lovely Castello di Nipozzano. There has been a castle here since 1000, and you can understand why. The position dominates the surrounding countryside. But there is also a handsome Villa from the 1700s. Its low key aristocratic elegance, charms and intrigues you into wandering into the wine store, perhaps even into booking a tasting. It is worth it. The wines are impressive and the laid back, welcoming style is uniquely Tuscan.

Heavenly, welcoming, peaceful and reviving

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted in every way with the stunning location surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, the friendly helpful welcome from the lovely owners with tips on local area and even offering to shop for us in advance if we chose. Thank you so much for our glorious stay, the 3 bed house was so comfortable with delicious views everywhere. Pontesieve is an easy drive down the track and we found it very convenient for Florence but also exploring the Casentino hills, don't miss Poppi! Thank you and we shall return!! Very much recommend.

Beautiful setting and property!

  • 5 of 5

The setting and the property were beautiful! Even better than the photographs. All the previous reviews were spot on! It was spotlessly clean with nice bed linen and towels. The owners were lovely, there on hand if you needed any help or advice but did not impose in any way. Jasmine and Peggy (dog and cat!) were a big hit! So cute! There is a very good book provided by the owners with local restaurants etc. We ate at a few but I can't remember the names. The is a really cute gelateria in San Francesco called Sottani. It is really nice. Unfortunately we weren't able to do the wine tour at Nippozano as they were very busy at that time. However we did have some wine from the wine store there and it was delicious! Book this early if you are interested. We would highly recommend this property.

Truly the best gîte we have ever rented

  • 5 of 5

The Borgo di Sopra villas were a centuries-old watch tower that had been tastely refurbished with modern amenities. Clean, spacious and comfortable, yet with the touch and feel of the Old Europe. The property was on a beautifully maintained huge outdoor space half way on top of a hill. The land was adorned with flowering plants, including furiously blooming lavenders with hovering bees, butterflies and Italian moths, 30ft wild walnut trees with eagerly awaiting squirrels, and outdoor sheltered sitting areas to enjoy the view.

The view was magnificent: the property overlooked the valley of the river of Arno that constituted a tranquil Tuscan picture of to-the-horizon vineyards, olive groves and a red-roof small town. On top of the hill was a castle of a world-famous Chianti family who offered a most memorable wine tour. The hill had many long foot-paths so bring hiking shoes.

The property was a short 20 minutes train ride to Florence and a 40 minutes drive to Siena. Florence offered great museums of renaissance art and never ending shopping opportunities and Siena a more subdued but colorful medieval Italian city-state experience.

The hosts were super friendly and helpful. They arranged for us a wine tour, restaurant reservations (talk about sumptuous slow Italian foods) and suggested attractions that only locals would know. We're especially in-debt for their care in a medical emergency.

We would not hesitate to recommend this property to all and we will surely go back to it ourselves.

A scene from the movies

  • 5 of 5

After reviewing many locations to stay at, we determined that Borgo di Sopra was just what we were looking for. My wife, myself, our adult son, our adult daughter and our son-in –law arrived to be greeted by our gracious hosts, Jane and Giampiero. Their home was everything we dreamed of. It gave five adults plenty of individual space yet it was a wonderful family center. The location, the views and the accommodations were simply wonderful. It was idyllic. It was easy access to Florence either by local train or by car (which is really a must) and Siena. The wines of the region are fabulous. I encourage you to taste them all at local wine tours. Giampiero made some excellent restaurant suggestions for both Siena and locally. We tried both and his recommendations hit the mark both times. The walk up to the castle was easy and both the castle and the views from it were superb. My daughter summed it up best when she declared that the family must return in five years to Borgo di Sopra again for it gave us wonderful memories.

MOST MEMORABLE FOUR NIGHTS AT THIS VILLA

  • 5 of 5

OUR HOST JANE WAS ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL HOSTS AND SHE LOOKED AFTER EACH AND EVERY DETAIL OF THE HOUSE AND OUR STAY. WE WERE TWO COUPLES (SIXTY PLUS) AND HAD THE THREE BEDROOM + THREE BATHROOM HOUSE FROM HER BUT WE WOULD GIVE FULL MARKS TO BOTH HUSBAND AND WIFE WHO WERE SO CONCERNED ABOUT OUR COMFORT AND WELFARE.

WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND THIS PRORTY TO EVERYONE WHOM WE KNOW BUT CAR IS ESSENTIAL BECAUSE IT IS FAR FROM THE MAIN TOWN BUT EXTREMELY PEACEFUL AND BEAUTIFUL.

Borgo di Sopra - Vista

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in Vista at Borgo di Sopra. It was absolutely wonderful!!! The location was perfect for day trips to Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Arrezo and Florence. It was lovely to sit on the terrace in the evening, after a long day of site seeing, with a great glass of wine from the winery located in the castle above the property. The castle was a 15 - 20 minute walk up the hill and the views were magnificant! When I go back to Tuscany I will definitely stay here again. I would recommend it highly to anyone who wants to see Tuscany and relax at the same time.

The 2 main airports in Tuscany (Pisa and Florence) are easily accessible . Short breaks are feasible all year round! You'll know you have made an escape from routine, though, when you drive down the winding approach road. You pass through vineyards with a historic castle and our property above you in the distance. You are now in the Nipozzano estate of the noble Florentine family of Frescobaldi. From your apartment, a pleasant walk, with superb views, will take you up to the castle. There the wine is aged in the historic cellars and you can taste and buy all Frescobaldi wines. Numerous other panoramic walks dot the area (the historic monastery of Vallombrosa is not far either). For renaissance culture, we are near Florence and Arezzo. Regular trains from Pontassieve station (5 minutes away) to central Florence take only 20-25 minutes. Alternatively, designer outlet discounts from Gucci, YSL, Todds etc are to be found at the Mall, outside Leccio, 15 minutes away.

Other Activities: Wine tasting.
