About this property

Wompoo Eco Retreat - Mangosteen Bungalow with views

Wompoo Eco Retreat has a two self-contained private bungalows. The Mangosteen Bungalow has similar interior design as the Rambutan Bungalow (see separate listing if the Mangosteen is booked for the dates suited to you) with an indoor/outdoor shower that has views over the rainforest, plus a real king-size bed. It also has an outdoor rammed earth bath. The bungalow's construction uses rammed earth to ensure a cool interior and designed to maximise views of the mountain ranges from the bedroom and bathroom.

We provide our guests with complimentary breakfast accessing good quality produce, and where possible, source it locally. At Wompoo Eco Retreat we take advantage of our remoteness and living “off the grid” by providing bird watching binoculars rather than a television.

The bungalow has private undercover seating with self contained cooking facilities. The proximity of each bungalow provides privacy for our guests. Elevated on a hill to capture tropical breezes, the property has stunning views to Thornton Peak, Cape Tribulation and the Coral Sea. We are located in close proximity to beautiful Cow Bay Beach, numerous waterholes, mangroves and rainforest boardwalks.

Wompoo Eco Retreat gets its name from the `Wompoo Fruit Dove’, a beautiful dove with an amazing purple breast, and green, yellow and white markings. This bird has a very unusual call. Listening to the Wompoo is like listening to a human conversation, but seemingly muted and far away. Our retreat is so named due to the presence of this lovely bird.

A significant area of the property has trees with discrete open spaces as well as tranquil spots to enjoy the flora and fauna. Further, there is a creek, meandering through Wompoo that ensures a welcome retreat for quieter contemplation.

Guests have access to -

- King size bed with quality linen
- Outdoor undercover self-catering facilities
- Fridge
- Handmade soap (made on the property by your hosts)
-Handmade bath salts (made on the property by your hosts)
- Free Wi-Fi
- Continental breakfast of local fruit, bread and condiments including, museli, plunger coffee (see photo of what to expect),
- an assortment of local Daintree teas and biodynamic milk

We are a friendly couple who respect people's privacy. Our house is 20 metres away from the bungalow. Guests are more than welcome to come up to the house if they have any questions or need a refresh of supplies etc.

Wompoo Eco Retreat is ideally situated. Just five kilometres from the beautiful Cow Bay Beach, 20 minutes from the Daintree River and 30 minutes to Cape Tribulation. Other easily accessible places are Boardwalks, Daintree Discovery Centre, Coopers Creek Wilderness Tours, tropical ice cream outlets and Ocean Safarai snorkelling reef trip.

There are a number of restaurants and cafes in the area, however, if you would like to eat in at your accommodation the bungalow is equipped for self catering. We recommend purchasing supplies either in Cairns, Mossman or Port Douglas. There is also a well stocked convenience store in Cow bay.

During the two hour drive from the Cairns International and Domestic Airports, you will travel the scenic Coral Sea coastline till you cross the Daintree River by ferry. Once aboard the iconic ferry you can sense the change of pace as you slowly switch off and start your journey of digital detachment! The cost for the ferry is $45 return, you can choose to purchase a visitors book if you want to have the option of multiple trips.

House Rules
It is because of the eco values of this area that we choose to live here, yet want to share this place with you. We reduce our human foot-print with thought placed on how we live. The spring water on our property is from an artesian fracture with no pesticides or herbicide input, and is tested, therefore safe for drinking. We generate our own solar power, but in times of high electricity demand, or little sun we may use the generator for short periods. You will notice the limited number of power points and the higher reliance on gas, this is to minimise power usage. We ask that high powered devices like hairdryers and shavers are not used. Check in from 2pm, check out 10.00am.

A compost bin is provided for your food scraps. These will be placed in our compost and eventually end up in the garden.

Smoking Policy
We respect your right to smoke, however, it is not permitted inside the bungalows. Smoking is allowed on the deck area PROVIDED THAT all windows and doors remain closed. An ashtray is provided and we request that all cigarette butts, ash, tobacco or any used smoking product is disposed of correctly. Please don’t take any soiled ashtrays inside the accommodation.

Beautiful setting but open air bathroom attracted bugs
The setting was beautiful and peaceful but if you dont like to be visited by Daintree insects during the night or are private like me with my bathroom habits with my partner yhrn this place may not suit you. At night bugs are attracted to the light and the bathroom and toilet is completely open to the elements meaning all types of insects ventured into the bathroom at night which was really stressful as you didnt know what you would find when u opened the door. Also if you need to go to toilet there is no privacy if your partner is cooking as it it all together. If they owners put in glass partitioning and a blind it may help but i suspect they designed the accommodation to give you a glamping experience but for us it was stressful at night. Only gave one pillow too which wasnt great as i use a second cushion for my legs due to back issues to lie properly on side. This was not a huge issue. However Jillian and Peter supplied a gorgeous selection of fruits, tea, coffee, and condiments for breakfast plus good cookware and linen. I would rate it a 5 if it was all indoors and extra pillows supplied. But for us the area was too quiet too. But perfect for a nature escape if you like insects

Amazing
If you're looking at this place and wondering if you should book it or not, just do it. This is hands down one of the best settings to stay in I have ever experienced. It is in the perfect location to enjoy all the Daintree has to offer and also has a beautiful view of the mountains. 10/10 and will most definitely be making the effort to return.

We loved our stay at Wompoo! The indoor area was very comfortable & the outdoor kitchen & bathroom made us feel in touch with nature. The views are amazing, and the local fruit, produce, handmade Soaps & bath salts were all appreciated. The location is convenient for exploring the Daintree & Cape Tribulation, and Peter’s suggestions for where to go we’re excellent. We have already recommended Wompoo to our friends and would love to stay again!
