About the property

La Croix

La Croix offers a comfortable base to explore one of the most beautiful parts of the Dordogne. The garden is filled with evening primrose, hollyhocks and buddleia which attract many butterflies, notably Swallowtail. The balcony allows ample room to eat 'al fresco' with a commanding view as the sun sets over rolling countryside. Aubeterre, one of 'Les beaux villages de France' is only 15 minutes drive away. It has great historical interest and has its own beach on the river Dronne. St Aulaye also has a river beach and the lake resort of La Jemaye is also a short drive away. There are many good restaurants within easy reach and Riberac market on a Friday morning is essential!!! Several supermarkets can be found here and there is a Spar store 5 minutes drive away from La Croix at St Severin which also has butcher, bakery, bank and post office.

La Croix is excellent for relaxing 'away from it all' with beautiful countryside. An artists paradise. A creative atmosphere. Perfect for spiritual renewal. There's a wood burning stove if needed.

We came here on our honeymoon and had the perfect time, La croix was everything we hoped and more! The gite is wonderfully rustic chic with a large and comfy bed. The gardens are as beautiful as the view! Sara was a great host, greeting us with champagne on arrival, and around if needed during our stay but never intrusive. Thank you, we won't forget our time here x

Pretty Gite, tucked away in the heart of the French Perigord

  • 5 of 5

This Gite was so very pretty we fell in love with it straight away. Our host Sarah was very friendly, the Gite was clean and had everything that we needed and was set in such pretty gardens, it was a shame to have to leave at the end of our week. We had all our meals out on the balcony which got the sun right till the end of the day. There is a small pool in the garden, shared with the other Gites, which was deep and cool for a dip at the end of a hot day, but not big enough to actually swim.

The local area is quite remote, a car is needed to get anywhere, and out of season (we went in June) many restaurants in the locality are not yet open. Riberac, the local town is about 20 minutes away. The bakers here is amazing, and there are a good number of shops, cafes, restaurants and a supermarket - everything you need really. Here you can also get a kayak, to explore the River Donne - watch out for weirs though. Local roads are very quiet, perfect for walking and biking.

Thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet of this part of our holiday, would definitely recommend.

Tranquility and soul

  • 5 of 5

This is a "must book" for everyone who's looking for a spiritual, powerful and tranquil place for slowing down, discovering yourself, making plans, literature or music and meeting kind people. At the spacious, cosy and soulful gîte you can forgot about your troubles and feel the sun in everybody's heart - even if the sun outside is wrapped by the clouds in the sky and temperatures are low (which might probably happen when you travel in late winter/early spring). If you nevertheless chose to meet people you'll be surprised by the vital international, mainly English, community around which you can meet at cafés and bars in f.e. Saint-Severin or Aubeterre. If you're more into sightseeing you'll find places of historical interest in the countryside as well as worth-a-visit towns like Angoûleme and Périgueux. Sara Horton is a generous, congenious, exceptional landlady worth to meet. Beware of some doors inside the gîte - you could bang your head repeatedly if you are taller than 5 1/2 ft. ;-)

Fabulous cottage in a stunning location!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a lovely two week stay in this beautiful gite and I thought it necessary to write a review to let you know what a fantastic time we had. The gite was everything we were hoping for, stylish and well equipped and the surrounding gardens were peaceful and relaxing. The views from the balcony where we ate breakfast every morning were stunning and the surrounding villages and lively markets were great to explore. We opted for a meal provided by Sara on the first night which was delicious and very welcome after a day travelling. La Criox is perfect for couples after a romantic, relaxing break and I would highly recommend it for anyone wishing to discover this delightful area. Sara and Pete were wonderful hosts who were on hand to answer any queries and we felt very welcome, I'm sure we'll return!

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 11 relaxing and very enjoyable days. The very friendly and approachable owner (Sara) was on site for the entire stay so if problems were to arise she was on hand to sort them out. The gite was charming with excellent views from the balcony at the rear of the property. It was extremely quiet and the view of the stars was exceptional. The friendly lizard on the kitchen windowsill made washing up a pleasure. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to come !

A Perfect Rural Haven

  • 5 of 5

**** The Perfect Rural Haven - Truly Magic! ****

I was fortunate enough to find this peace of heaven in 2008 while looking for a peaceful getaway for an extended stay - returning again in 2009. I stayed in the romantic, rustic Cottage for 2 whole months & also enjoyed a week-end in the larger and equally well appointed Farmhouse, which is ideal for families.

Nestled on the crest of a hill in one of the most beautiful parts of the Dordogne, "La Croix", surrounded by stunning scenery is where dreams really do come true. Its within close proximity to several lovely villages and many tourist sites and is the perfect starting

point to discovering what South West France has to offer.

There are also many wonderful walks and scenic drives to enjoy, but do return in time to savour the spectacular sunsets each evening from the privacy of your own deck! It really is heaven!

Sara (now a friend) is a wonderful hostess who delights in sharing her charming world with her guests and I have no hesitation in

recommending La Croix.

Perigueux, 45 minutes drive is the capital of the Dordogne. The medieval part of the town comes alive on Wednesdays and Sturdays when local artisans display their first-class produce, including cured meats, truffles, foie - gras and pies or 'pates de Perigueux'. La Cite, once a pivotal Gallo - Roman site of Versunna, is also worth a foray. If you walk up the hill from La Cite you'll come to the Cathedrale St. Front which proved to be a trial run for the architect Abadie who later went on to design the Sacre - Couer in Paris.

Angouleme, a cathedral city, used to be dominated by paper mills but now has a thriving tourist industry. The old town occupies a high steep sided plateau overlooking a bend in the Charente. It has many charms. Brantome, the Venice of the Perigord, is surrounded by a loop in the River Dronne. The towns pride is its Benedictine Abbey. Brantome is a must see as is St. Emillion, although a one and a half drive to the south is well worth the experience.
