Gite in the garden

This pretty stone built gite stands away from the main farmhouse across the garden and is very private. Well insulated with white painted interior it has a bedroom on the mezzanine looking over the comfortable living area. The headroom at the rail is 6ft./1.83 m. sloping down to 3 ft. 6 inches/1.07m on the upper level. Beneath the mezzanine is a well equipped galley kitchen and a shower room and WC (headroom for both:6ft 1inch/ 1.85 m.). The laundry consisting of additional shower,WC, washing machine and tumble drier is annexed to it. A great feature of this little gite is an extensive terra cotta tiled covered terrace approximately 9 metres square with outdoor kitchen area. The grapevine covered facade leads onto an extensive lawn and then down onto a lower level lawn. The view out across vanishing horizons from 'La Croix' high on its hill is one of the main features of this holiday.

About the property

La Croix

La Croix offers a comfortable base to explore one of the most beautiful parts of the Dordogne. The garden is filled with evening primrose, hollyhocks and buddleia which attract many butterflies, notably Swallowtail. The balcony allows ample room to eat 'al fresco' with a commanding view as the sun sets over rolling countryside. Aubeterre, one of 'Les beaux villages de France' is only 15 minutes drive away. It has great historical interest and has its own beach on the river Dronne. St Aulaye also has a river beach and the lake resort of La Jemaye is also a short drive away. There are many good restaurants within easy reach and Riberac market on a Friday morning is essential!!! Several supermarkets can be found here and there is a Spar store 5 minutes drive away from La Croix at St Severin which also has butcher, bakery, bank and post office.

La Croix is excellent for relaxing 'away from it all' with beautiful countryside. An artists paradise. A creative atmosphere. Perfect for spiritual renewal. There's a wood burning stove if needed.

Absolutely beautiful. So peaceful. Glorious garden

  • 5 of 5

The Gite was perfect. Everything you needed in the kitchen. We ate outside on the terrace all the time. Shower was good. Bed very comfortable, with view of stars on clear night. Very peaceful, stunning views. Sarah was the perfect host. Would definately go back, and certainly recommend this as a quiet holiday for two.

A tranquil stay in a beautiful part if France

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely week in the Gite in the Garden. The accommodation was great and the kitchen really well equipped. The shaded eating area was lovely during the hot sunny day and great for dinner in the evening. The garden and pool were lovely to relax in. The small local towns have everything you need and some great restaurants. Sara is a lovely host - very helpful and a mine of useful information.

Perigueux, 45 minutes drive is the capital of the Dordogne. The medieval part of the town comes alive on Wednesdays and Sturdays when local artisans display their first-class produce, including cured meats, truffles, foie - gras and pies or 'pates de Perigueux'. La Cite, once a pivotal Gallo - Roman site of Versunna, is also worth a foray. If you walk up the hill from La Cite you'll come to the Cathedrale St. Front which proved to be a trial run for the architect Abadie who later went on to design the Sacre - Couer in Paris.

Angouleme, a cathedral city, used to be dominated by paper mills but now has a thriving tourist industry. The old town occupies a high steep sided plateau overlooking a bend in the Charente. It has many charms. Brantome, the Venice of the Perigord, is surrounded by a loop in the River Dronne. The towns pride is its Benedictine Abbey. Brantome is a must see as is St. Emillion, although a one and a half drive to the south is well worth the experience.
