La Croix - Romantic farmhouse. Summer or winter retreat. Stunning views - Farmhouse

Updated: 19-Oct-2016
Self catering farmhouse & 2 gites.Beautiful summers,cosy winters.Lovely views

La Croix offers a comfortable base to explore one of the most beautiful parts of the Dordogne. The garden is filled with evening primrose, hollyhocks and buddleia which attract many butterflies, notably Swallowtail. The terraces and balcony allow ample room to eat 'al fresco' with a commanding view as the sun sets over rolling countryside. Aubeterre, one of 'Les beaux villages de France' is only 15 minutes drive away. It has great historical interest and has its own beach on the river Dronne. There are many good restaurants within easy reach and Riberac market on a Friday morning is essential!!!

The accomodation is in three very separate areas, suitable for families and friends, but also can be entirely independent. The farmhouse can accommodate 2 and the gite 2 with the option of a third on a sofa bed if required. The 'Gite in the garden' accommodates 2. La Croix is excellent for relaxing 'away from it all' with beautiful countryside. An artists paradise. A creative atmosphere. Perfect for spiritual renewal. Wood burning stoves make this a perfect, cosy winter retreat.

Details for holiday farmhouse Farmhouse, 1 Bedroom, Sleeps 2, 1 Bathroom

The farmhouse has a large traditional kitchen. You walk from the kitchen into a spacious and comfortable sitting room with French window that leads onto a large north facing terrace on which there is ample room to lay a table for 'al fresco' dinner as the sun sets away to the west. A spiral staircase leads up to a big double bedroom which is the entire width of the farmhouse with a west facing large opening circular window at the gable end. The great pleasure of La Croix is its situation nestling against the top of a ridge with commanding views over the patchwork landscape. It is possible to enjoy the sunshine in the front garden on a variety of recliners and comfortable furniture surrounded by the scented shrubs and plants that abound. Enjoying a glass of wine or a meal on the balcony particularly in the evening as the sun sets is a special pleasure. This is an ideal romantic destination for a honeymoon or other special occasion. The perfect getaway.

French Countryside Vista. . . Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

La Croix is a beautiful, tranquil retreat--truly a romantic paradise. Our host was wonderful from the very beginning. She welcomed us with open arms, a phone at her ear, giving us directions, and a glass of wine. She was very helpful with recommendations of places to go without being interfering. The Farm House itself is quite charming with French doors opening onto a lovely terrace that has an idyllic view of the rolling countryside and the beautiful English garden. A wonderful rustic country kitchen that is well stocked, having a fireplace and large table. The bedroom is up a winding stairway and takes up the entire top floor. It is beautifully decorated--truly a romantic get-a-way. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Worst stay of my life

  • 1 of 5

When I arrived in La Croix, I was shown to a sewer smelling shed in the back of the yard. The toilet was not working. To get the toilet working I had to turn the water on for it. Once the water was on, it spayed down my legs. There was not kitchen porcelain and utensils for two in the dirty kitchen, the front door of the shed was falling down of the hinges, the dining area was outside in front of everyone walking by, ants were falling down in my bed when I was resting in the bed. The promised view was not there. Imagine my disappointment and ruined vacation.

Owner's Response: This is an extraordinary review and completely out of line with the opinion of my other guests. The people concerned arrived on the wrong date and believed that they had booked the farmhouse at twice the price of the Gite in the garden. On investigation HomeAway confirmed that they had booked the Gite in the garden which is a charming little stone built Gite as described on the advert and not the farmhouse. This was a very regrettable and unusual state of affairs. I am amazed at these comments. The two couples that followed had very small children and loved their holiday in the Gite in the garden and said they would return. I am always keen to address any problems that my guests may encounter which thankfully is rare.

Peace, relaxation and views.

  • 5 of 5

Such a beautiful place to stay. We wanted peace, relaxation and views and the gîte was perfect for all three! We were made to feel very welcome and the hosts are great at getting the perfect balance of hospitality and seclusion. The recommendations of places to visit were great and the gîte itself is lovely, especially the beautiful garden for sunbathing and reading and the balcony for breakfast and sundowners with that view! We would love to return one day

Rustic charm in rolling countryside

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a week in the Farmhouse at La Croix and wanted to let others know that if they are thinking of booking this house, then they should most certainly go ahead!

The property itself is idyllic. It sits in a wild, romantic garden and has a terrace/balcony out the back with a view of the rolling countryside that looks almost like a painting. The interior is rustic, peaceful and quintessentially 'country' - the kitchen is large and has all the necessary equipment to rustle up meals (if you fancy cooking for yourself) but it's the upstairs bedroom which is the real show-stopper. With beautiful wooden beams and a free-standing bath, it's like something from a interior design magazine. From a practical point of view, the house was very clean and tidy and, although joined to the owner's own house, quiet and private. The swimming pool is small and only suitable for a dip rather than doing lengths - keen swimmers should head for one of the local lakes.

Sara was an excellent, friendly host, meeting us upon arrival with a complimentary bottle of wine. She gave us plenty of ideas about what to do and see in the local area - there were also stacks of brochures and flyers which we found very useful when planning days out. We took our iPad and made use of the wifi - this proved a very helpful addition to old-fashioned leaflets, as we could plan our routes thoroughly using Google maps and book restaurants/check opening times/buy tickets online (by the way, a car is essential for this region of France).

Places that we visited and would recommend include the village Aubeterre, with a subterranean church; Brantôme with its magnificent Abbey, prettily located next to the river Dronne; the steam train at Martel; caves and underground river at Padirac; lake at La Jemaye; Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire at Terrasson; the two contrasting chateaux at Bourdeilles; and St Emilion with its endless wine boutiques. We also had a delicious meal at La Vieille Maison round the corner in St Paul Lizonne.

5 stars!

Romance and tranquility at it's best

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the farmhouse for a week-end retreat and it was just idyllic. I would totally recommend this beautiful farmhouse for it's location, tranquility, space, comfort and charm. Sara was a lovey host who made us feel very welcome indeed and the meal that was arranged for us, was just perfect. Very private and a special place to relax, unwind and get away from it all.

Enchanting Le Croix

  • 4 of 5

Le Croix is, without a doubt, a magical place!

We stayed there for a week last October and the only unfortunate thing was the weather! This is a place to really enjoy in the sunshine where you can potter around the slightly shambolic but delightful garden and fall into one of the many seats dotted around, or sit on the wooden balcony, and soak up the peace and spectacular landscape. The house is a lovely eccentric mixture of the kind of creative charm that you might find in Country Living mgazine put together by a young artist and with enough personal details to make you feel 'at home' rather than in a 'holiday let'.

The countryside around is stunning with rolling fields and a great open landscape. Aubeterre is an enchanting small village nearby that caters well for visitors with cafes and restaurants. Don't miss the amazing monolithic church hewn from a single block of rock. It is spectacular!

Sara is a welcoming host who lives nearby during the letting season. She was around often enough to offer local guidance but we felt the place was our own during our stay.

My only small critism would be that it would be nice to have more books and CDs .....and maybe not have a TV, but this is a very personal view. Le Croix is a tranquil haven in which to immerse yourself in the joys of the countryside.

Owner's Response: I have just revisited this review dating back to October 2008.We now have an extensive stone balcony on the farmhouse replacing the old wooden one, a photo of which is there to be seen.I was delighted to receive this positive review of 'La Croix' (not 'Le Croix'). I have now built up a collection of DVDs/CDs but I often find my visitors like to bring a few of their own favourites and of course the comment about the TV is very personal. It is there for those visitors that enjoy it.

Perigueux, 45 minutes drive is the capital of the Dordogne. The medieval part of the town comes alive on Wednesdays and Sturdays when local artisans display their first-class produce, including cured meats, truffles, foie - gras and pies or 'pates de Perigueux'. La Cite, once a pivotal Gallo - Roman site of Versunna, is also worth a foray. If you walk up the hill from La Cite you'll come to the Cathedrale St. Front which proved to be a trial run for the architect Abadie who later went on to design the Sacre - Couer in Paris.

Angouleme, a cathedral city, used to be dominated by paper mills but now has a thriving tourist industry. The old town occupies a high steep sided plateau overlooking a bend in the Charente. It has many charms. Brantome, the Venice of the Perigord, is surrounded by a loop in the River Dronne. The towns pride is its Benedictine Abbey. Brantome is a must see as is St. Emillion, although a one and a half drive to the south is well worth the experience.
