Our Villa/ Farmhouse is a 3 bedroomed, stone built farmhouse all on one level (bungalow),situated in quiet countryside,3km outside the pretty village of La Chapelle Achard in a small scattered hamlet of about 20 dwellings. The farmhouse is well furnished +decorated, with art work by the owner displayed throughout.Attached to the French-speaking caretaker’s house+has its own extensive private gardens set in an orchard,+nice, relaxing views across fields and woods. There are many romantic walks near this self-catering summer holiday rental villa, one leads down to a little tiny bridge near a ford, across a stream. The garden has its own terrace with garden furniture, leading to an area with a large free-standing barbeque, all set in an orchard. There is a boules area in the large side garden,+ a play area near the pool which has 2 swings,a ladder,+hoops. There are many cycles paths+routes near the Farmhouse/ BUNGALOW,+one passes the very quiet road next to Villa, so easy use of the free 10 bikes for renters use.

Located between the villages of La Chapelle Achard and Ste. Foy, near the market town of La Mothe Achard, our Farmhouse offers the perfect setting for exploring the 8 districts of the Achards, with fishing in the lakes and the nearby rivers ( one on a walk from our Farmhouse ). The Farmhouse itself sits in the middle of the Achard countryside in the beautiful department of Vendee, - just a stones throw away from the Bocage, making it a perfect setting for outdoor activities including hiking, walking and cycling. Why not use some of our 10 bikes which are available free for you. We are also on one of the walking routes through La Chapelle Achard - with a special puzzle (in French ) for you to decipher - on the walk you will find 8 signs with the puzzle on. This walk will take you past cows, chicken and duck farms, rivers and reservoirs.

There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports including sailing, windsurfing and canoeing at the Water centre in Les Sables D'Olonnes ( Only 10 miles away ), where there is a vast crescent shaped sandy beach with rock pools at one end, and also a promenade which is pedestrianised and has entertainment in the summer. Near the Zoo, and the Water Centre, on the beach is also a Surfing school, which has all you need to hire.

There are also several excellent golf courses nearby. The towns of Les Sables D'Olonnes, La Roche-sur-Yon, Bretignolles, and St. Gilles-Croix-de Vie, all are Market towns/ villages, and are within easy reach and are great for shopping and packed with museums, art galleries and other attractions such as the Flanneries shopping Mall which is an attraction if it is raining / or lunch times when it is open right through. Our swimming pool has a hard cover which means it can be used if it rains and in the evenings - with our outside light, where you can sit on the terrasse on the Wooden Sunbeds / loungers and look over the tranquil countryside, sipping your local Vendeen wine - the vineyards are in Bretignolles and have a motor route through them, and caves that you can buy wine from. Alternatively try sitting on the small wooden benches by the Boules Court in the Sunset quaffing your local beers such as Melusine which you can buy from the 2 local big supermarkets in La Mothe Achard, which also has a Cave for your local wine and a Tourist Office to keep up with events in the area, and a postoffice opposite to post your cards. The local Chateau at the far end of La Mothe Achard also has a good but expensive restaurant, but at more reasonable prices there are Le Carabi, and a pizzeria restaurant, a Pizza takeaway, and several bars. Also, at Ste Foy there is a restaurant, bar, superette, and a boulangerie, and a hairdresser and at La Chapelle Achard there is a bar and boulangerie, and hairdresser. Le Mothe Achard has a markethall with fish, meat, mussles, cheese, etc and fruit and veg out side, and it is held once a week on either a Friday or a Thursday, and once a month it has a much bigger market ( full list of ALL nearby markets and their days etc. left in the Farmhouse ).

Les Sables D'Olonnes: Les Sables d’Olonne, the nearby local seaside town,. It has a huge Market hall full of fish and shell food, fruit and veg and meat, even a horse meat stall, upstairs there is cheese and dairy foods and bread for sale, also an area that the local people sell their excess that they have grown in their gardens.

It is well-known for it's vast sandy beaches - on the beach are trampolines and entertainment for children, and on the Remblai promenade (all sorts of evening entertainments in the high season - comedians, several live bands and different types of music, skate boarding events, live theatre), and it's working harbour ( boat trips to Île de Ré, and La Rochelle etc. ), overlooked by a street of over 20 restaurants, most of which offer local fish delicacies/ Pizza / Creperies etc. The Harbour can be crossed by an electric boat to La Chaum with Live music in the evenings in the bars. Les Sables D'Olonne also has an Art Gallery at the Abbey - well worth a visit. The Zoo has loads of new baby animals. The Red Panda is favourite amongst our visitors. There is also a sailing school at the lake nr the beach, and a surf school on the nearby beach. Thalasso Therapie in the Spa centre in the Mercury hotel near the lake, and 2 Casinos both with restaurants. If you fancy an aerial view then you can take a trip in a small aeroplane from the airfield at Les Sables D'Olonnes. For the Karting fanatics there is a course on the way from Ste Foy to Les Sables + Port Bourgenay .

Nearby: Roche-sur-Yon is the capital of Vendee, and a centre which has the Haras National Equestrian School, which can be visited. The Flaneries is a large Mall which is great to visit in lunchtime - as it doesn't close and if it is raining.

La Chapelle Achard has a Deer Farm with baby deers. La Mothe Achard has a Potager Extraordinaire - a fabulous garden with lots of different squashs and pumpkins, which has lots of events through the season, such as a menu with soup made of the pumpkins in October, and 1/4/ 2014 has a NEW HUGE swimming pool complex with spa ,sauna, and an Hamman, and water slide.

There is a Jazz festival in May at St. Gilles-criox-de-Vie, and has a great pedestrian shopping lane, and a Market on Sundays.

At Coex there is Olefactory Garden, full of lovely flowers and delightful scents.

Near Coex is a Velo-Rail which you can travel on, with old fashioned wagons you can power.

Montaigu has a Old Steam Train which runs during the holiday season.

Also in Ste. Foy - only 2 miles away there has just been built and opened a massive covered arena in new tourist park on the far side of Ste Foy,with about 75 acres of Equestrian events for all you horse lovers, starting on Saturday 13/07/13 at 21.30, to open up the new park,(+massive lake with walks, an amphitheatre + playground + exercise layout), 9-12 riders dressed as Cavaliers / telling the story of during the Russian revolution, and other exploits in Europe and Italy with 15-20 horses – showing off their prowess.

Also Tuesday+Wednesday 21.30 from 16/07 to 28/08/13 – a horse display = 90 mins, with snacks+drinks starting at 20.00 hr

First part opened 13/07/13, with a horse display - I viewed it on Tuesday 23/07/13:

Then 'Le Voyages de Zabederio' - The story of Zaberderio - Travelling with his horse, he escapes from Russia, fighting off bandits, White Russians - displays of 8 horses with 2 Russians girl trainers. We start by seeing the horse head-butting Z when he tries to take a drink, then we see a thief try to steal the horse with Z, as Z goes to sleep between the horses legs, with a cover over himself and the horse. He escapes a group of White Russians on horses, all the while we see the horses giving displays of side-walking, and other dramatic jumps in the air. Later we see troika riding, and ladies riding side-saddle, going sideways etc, and the horse dancing to the music, and when Z finds his cousin Ivan in the circus we see a lady on stilts, dancing with the horses, all together a fabulous night, with snacks offered ( sandwiches, hotdogs, etc - drinks: beer, wine, and soft drink = iced tea etc. ) this lasted for 90 mins from 9.30 pm, we arrived at 8.40 pm, and it finished at 11.30 pm. About Valerie Speed

In this picture I am eating as usual, and have a creamy viennoise coffee at one of the many local restaurants in Les Sables D'Olonnes.

I love to visit in the Autumn - in the early evening and morning, you can hear the Owls as they drift over the fields, hunting for their supper.

My favourite area is = At the Port - la Guittiere you can see the Oyster beds, and buy fresh Oysters, Crabs, Lobsters Langoustines, and many shellfish. There are restaurants there and a hotel if you want to buy but not cook, and around the estuary at this Port are great walks, woods, guided tours and boat trip around these Oyster beds - which in 2010 got swept away by Tempest Cynthia, and have been rebuilt - I had not thought they could rescue them, but the whole area came together and worked to rebuild the Oyster Beds from the ruins, which we have seen up and running in Autumn 2012.

Valerie Speed purchased this villa in 2003

Why Valerie Speed chose Vendee

Our Villa in the countryside is near a bicycle trail, and right next to 4 different walks as you leave the kitchen door. You will be able to cycle down to the beaches - 30 mins, using the 10 FREE bicycles available for you to use at the Villa. One of the walks is past chicken, ducks and turkey farms and then down to a small pool to your left which is home to a copyu family, which looks like a beaver (see late evenings) and then down through drifts of woodland flowers in the spring all the while you might be lucky enough to be followed and serenaded by the NightingGale which lives in the hedge opposite the kitchen ( mostly in the Spring+Autumn),over a quiet babbling brook ( on a lovely green bridge), which in a drought you might be able to drive over as tractors use it as a ford, it's near a lovely picnic area with seats and picnic tables and a very special secret wishing well. It's in the countryside, but near enough for to get to a variety of beaches - 2 SURFING beaches, and the amazingly BIG beach at Les Sables D'Olonnes which has a sailing school at the end with the surfing shack, and next to it -half a mile further on - are the rocks for crab, prawn+fishing etc. Then there is the entertainment of trampolines etc near the sun-tents and the bars on the beaches. Nearer the sea - which goes out a long way, you can find people digging for Mussels for their tea. Further back there is lots of space for you to sunbath in the fabulous Sun. In the Evening (some of the shops stay open-mostly til 7, but a few til 10pm) you will find entertainment (til 10 or midnite ) galore on the promenade of bands playing (in Season) and clowns and skateboard/rollerblading competitors+more, and the openair theatre,-which is near the end which you can launch boats from, near the port end of the beach. The Port has 20-30 restaurants and takeaways for your lunch or dinners. Or fill up with Pomme Frites, Chi-Chi's,crepes and other exciting foods, on the Promenade, or at the Port.

What makes this villa unique

If you want to do your own cooking, there are lovely shops nearby selling fish and meat and to big supermarkets - one of which sells fresh fish for you to try at La Mothe Achard ( market day is Friday ) - 5 mins away. There is a Fish market shop at Les Sables D'Olonnes, with freshly caught ( that morning ) fish and shellfish off the boats, and in the market in the town on Saturday morning is the market for all local people to bring their own grown vegetables, fruit and cooked goodies.

It is a lot easier to get home as our Villa is down a less trodden dual carriage way and a few country lanes - at which are right angles to all the crowds who are just going along the coast road.

Our next-door Caretakers have a Kingfisher living near their pond, (which you may be lucky enough to see ), 1 dog, and 2 kittens which is super friendly ( unfortunately we ask you to respect the Villa and future guests - who have had allergies, and keep them out of the Villa at all times).

Pool Information :

It is a Double –Bubble shape, with metal steps and a sliding ABRI, which is a cover which is semi-retractable to halfway along the length of the pool. The ABRI acts as a greenhouse, when it is covering the pool. The sunshine heats the pool with the abri completely covering it, with the front cover in place, which makes this a self heating pool. Therefore if you have the pool covered when not in use, the pool water heats up, giving warm water. The pool water can reach 35 deg C in Summer, and in Spring and Autumn obtains the late 25-30’s. The tile surface around the pool has been treated with a water repellent, to stop / resist fungal growth etc. The tile area surrounding the pool is big enough for a number of sun-loungers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just wanted to say thanks for letting us use your wonderful house in France. We had a wonderful time and an action packed 2 weeks. Don’t know if you’ve been to the ‘Valee des Singes’ but we love it. I was the 3rd time we had been and it is a great experience.

Thanks once again

Nice house with great pool

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely relaxing holiday here. The house is pleasant and the pool is great, we were in it most days (when we weren't at the nearby beaches, of which there are many). There were two large boxes full of floats, boules, beach toys etc.

The location is great for accessing the many tourist attractions. We had several lovely meals out in nearby Talmont and Sables port.

The owner was very helpful too.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review, which I greatly appreciate. I am really happy that you enjoyed the cooling winds crossing the warm waters of the pool, one of my favourite things, and I particularly enjoy the sunsets. Seeing the swallows and swifts flying across the sky, listening to the nightingales, and seeking out the stars in the amazingly dark skies. There are also 3-4 restaurants, + 3 takeaways in nearby La Mothe Achard, only 5kms away, and Ste Foy ( 3km ) has 2 good eateries. These are some of my favourite things, along with the delicious food. Great location, with lots to do!

  • 4 of 5

A really practical location for a family, as it is within easy reach of beaches, countryside and a variety of attractions. We particularly enjoyed Les Sables D'Olonne, and a visit to La Rochelle. We also enjoyed the pool and the boule onsite, and used the bikes to cycle to get our croissants in the morning. The property was clean and well equipped, and we enjoyed the welcome bottle of wine.

Owner's Response: Thank you , T family, for your great review. I am so glad that you enjoyed some of the ten bikes freely available at the Villa, which is within easy reach of both Les Sables D'Olonnes, and it's indoor market where locals sell surplus from their gardens, and also it's lovely long beaches, and La Rochelle and it's lovely market - gateway to my favourite place - Ile de Ré. Tranquil and full of French Charm

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful relaxing week here in June. The house is in a lovely secluded spot within easy driving distance of Les Sables D'Olonne. The pool was fantastic and we spent most of the week in it! The house was very well equipped and had everything we needed. Thank you for a lovely holiday!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review A, I love the quietness of the Villa, and the ease of getting to Les Sables D'Olonnes, for the gourmet / foody experience of the 20 restaurants at the port, and the 10 others of La Chaume, just across harbour,- great to get to, on the little electric ferry boat. I agree with you - the POOL is just FAB, and with the cover/Abri ,it can be used, even IF it rains. As I am over for 3 months twice a year, I enjoy cooking, and like to have every kind of equipment, as I bake cakes etc. Valerie

Great property in the countryside.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful relaxing holiday. The pool was delightful especially in the hot weather. We used the barbecue and enjoyed our evening meals by the pool side. There is plenty of space for lounging and playing and the car can be kept under cover out of the sun. The cycles were a great bonus and several easy rides to nearby villages were taken. 6 of us shared the cottage, there was plenty of room, everything was clean and tidy.

A beautiful quiet spot surrounded by fields

  • 5 of 5

We have just come back from a wonderful week at L'octaviere bleu. The owner provided us with detailed descriptions about the property which were very accurate apart from the fact that the bikes are suitable from 10years old upward rather than 7 years old. The property was clean and well equipped. The garden and pool were lovely and the boules area and tennis/badminton area were great fun. Whilst there we visited the Puy du fou (historical re-enactments)which was amazing and the grand defi (high ropes in the trees) which was enjoyed by the whole family. There is so much to do in this part of France along with beautiful beaches and cycle rides. We would definitely consider coming back and would recommend this property to a friend.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review. I am so glad that you and your family enjoyed some of the great things that you can do in Vendee. Puy du Fou is THE theme parc to visit. The beaches are great - my favourite, for seeing the locals picking cockles etc, as the tide goes out, is the Huge crescent beach at Les Sables D'Olonne, which has the port at one end and rockpools in the middle, and at the other end there is a Surf school, and sailing club on the mini lake. I am disappointed with myself, as I forgot to send you the height of all the bikes, and I assumed that the smallest bike would fit your seven year old as I had a Seven year old staying in August 2011, and I had had no adverse comment.
