About this property

Romantic Stone Cottage for two, 5 minute Stroll to Beautiful Monpazier

Why squeeze yourselves into one cramped room when you can have a whole peaceful cottage to yourselves? At Les Cerisiers, enjoy all the amenities of a well-equipped, cosy stone cottage, with an iconic Dordogne village on your doorstep: Monpazier, classified as "One of the Most Beautiful Villages of France". This cottage is set on four peaceful acres, so you feel completely immersed in the tranquil French countryside, with this beautiful active village just steps away. The cottage is the old 'maison gardienne' or guardian's cottage for Villa Ste Therese - entirely refurbished recently. And it's in the heart of the most famous attractions & major landmarks of the Dordogne. Relax under a shady tree, or just unwind on the front lawns and enjoy stunning views of Monpazier as the sun sets.

Recent renovations have created a stylish, comfortable country cottage, providing all modern amenities. The kitchen is fully equipped to create any feast, or stroll just 700 metres into the village to enjoy one of the many great restaurants & cafes. There is a spacious living/dining area on the ground floor, and then up on the mezzanine is a comfortable large double bedroom. Completely separate, 70 metres away from the Villa, the cottage is private, peaceful and perfect for two. If you're seeking a tranquil retreat after a hard day's touristing, Les Cerisiers is ideal! The Villa can be viewed at Property #391654 and can also be rented.

COVID SAFETY POLICY: Guests can be assured we follow strict cleaning & disinfecting protocols in accordance with local French Government guidelines, using recommended anti-viral and anti-bacterial cleaning products on all surfaces, ventilating the property between visits, and hot-washing laundry services. Chateau Monbazillac (25km west); Chateaux at Beynac and Castelnaud (25km north); Chateau Biron (6km south); Chateau des Milandes (20km northeast); Chateau Bonaguil (19km southwest); Chateau Bridoire (28km west);
Gardens of Marquessac or Gardens of Eyrignac (both 30-45 min. drive north);
UNESCO listed Cadouin Abbey & Cloisters (15 mins north);
Amazing underground Caves: Grottes de Maxange (15km northwest); Gouffre de Proumeyssac (25km north); Grotte de Font-de-Gaume (38km north);
Horseriding near Belves (15 mins north) or Issigeac (15 mins west);
Canoeing, river beach & boat cruises: Limeuil, La Roque Gageac, Beynac (30 mins north).
Swimming lakes at nearby Villereal and Lanquais;
Stunning ancient villages: Sarlat, Domme, Belves, La Roque Gageac, Limeuil, Monflanquin, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Issigeac, Villefranche du Perigord

Monpazier has many fetes & festivals all year round, eg:
May: annual flower & rose festival;
July: Bastille Day bodega & fireworks at night;
July: Medieval Fair;
Summer: regular night markets in the central square; summer brocante market
Autumn: randonees (guided walks) in the nearby forests, cepes market; autumn brocante market
Dec: Christmas market, truffle fete;
Great weekly market every Thursday

The Village Itself is a Treasure: Famed as the best-preserved bastide village in France, Monpazier may seem like a small, tranquil place, but it is a working means a good choice of shops & restaurants for you! In fact the restaurants range from casual pizzerias, to family-run bistros, to Michelin-recommended elegant fine dining. There are two small supermarkets in the heart of the village, as well as an organic produce shop, two charcuteries, a patisserie, a boulangerie, wine cellars, a pharmacy, beauty salon with steamroom and masseuse, & an ice-creamerie.

Monpazier is the perfect village for browsing (and taking home an authentic souvenir) as it offers a range of wonderful artisans’ galleries and showrooms. These include: an ostrich egg engraver, a ceramics showroom, a wood turner for bowls & decorative pieces, traditional soap & perfume shop, beautiful print & framing shop, clockmaker, glassblower, artists' gallery and handmade leather goods.

Monpazier is at the heart of the southern Dordogne: the perfect base to explore this gorgeous region. And it's an easy 45 minute drive to Sarlat & its attractions.

In Summer, enjoy swimming & paddling in the Dordogne river beaches at Limeuil, Tremolat or Plage Caudon at Vitrac. Or there's a lovely lake set next to Chateau du Lanquais - perfect for a dip and a picnic.

Or Just Relax at Les Cerisiers: The grounds of Villa Ste Therese were landscaped 50 years ago, in the French tradition of a gentleman's country house - hedging, shaped shrubs, established large deciduous trees, creating a vista in all shades of green. A series of stone-walled terraces on the southern slopes lead down to the orchard below - a wonderful place to explore & figs, apples, peaches, walnuts, help yourself if they're in season! The northern lawn in front of Les Cerisiers has plenty of room for petanque, badminton, or volleyball. The cherry trees, walnut trees and laurel hedges create privacy between the cottage & Villa. Laze on a sun lounge on the terrace with a glass of wine and enjoy the peaceful view. We love the fact that we can walk into the village in 5 minutes & relax with a coffee just to watch the world go by! Monpazier's accredited as 'One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France' so we never tire of its ancient beauty and gentle pace.

Homeaway guest reviews can be viewed on the Owner Profile below ('About Rosemary V'). We also offer occasional Hosted Immersion Tours...a relaxed week discovering the region, with beautiful Villa Ste Therese as your home base. So much to see, do and taste...

Expected better
The property is overhyped. Nice location, good sleeping and sitting area. The following are observations that in their entirety helped spoil our stay. Bathroom/shower room the extractor fan was not working. Shower tiles (grouting) black and not nice. The outside table and chairs - no parasol to shade against the heat. The Bar-b-Q (gas) didn't work so unable to use. Bulb in the cooker hood not working. bulb in the sittingroom chandelier not working. Overall a very disappointing experience. Not happy. Better places nearby.

Idyllic rural cottage in the Dordogne valley
Really enjoyable stay in a secluded cottage half a mile away from Monpazier 'beaux village'. A perfect place for a quiet, relaxing break in rural Dordogne. Monpazier itself is an ideal base for tour of the area, having good restaurants/bars, cafes and shops & a lively courtyard where you can soak up the local atmosphere. Lots to see and do in this area, great opportunities for river bathing, kayaking, cycling, walking and exploring pretty Medieval villages, ancient caves and breathtaking scenery. The cottage is set in the grounds of a larger villa, but separated from it across grounds and a small orchard with cherry and walnut trees. It is attractively decorated in simple French style and the mezzanine bedroom with balcony overlooking the living area is gorgeous. It is plenty spacious for 2 with all facilities you would need and a delightful patio area for relaxing in the afternoon sun. Very highly recommended, thankyou Rosemary we really loved our holiday here!

A fabulous place to stay - you won't want to leave
Rosemary was very friendly and helpful and sent us excellent information in advance of our trip. On arrival, the cottage was perfect, spotlessly clean. Everything you could have needed was provided. The setting is truly magical. We were lucky to have the whole garden to ourselves as the villa was vacant. The town is steeped in history. We just sat in the square and took it all in. Great restaurants and friendly shopkeepers. The walk to the town is not far but the lane back to the house is steep esp if the weather is hot as we enjoyed. I would not hesitate to recommend this cottage.

About the host

Host profile image
We are an Australian family who have all been bitten by the Travel Bug! We are also incurable, unabashed Francophiles. The Dordogne is emblematic of everything we love about 'la belle France' villages, amazing chateaux, wonderful wineries, millennia of history, not to mention the cuisine. Some of the most iconic food and wines are in this gras, truffles, confit duck, Bordeaux wines, cabecou goats cheese, Monbazillac list is endless! And we love it all!

Why they chose this property

We have the best of both worlds at Villa Ste Therese - the peace and tranquility of four acres to enjoy, just a leisurely stroll to a lively active village, and location in an area overflowing with amazing ancient sights. At our place we can be as busy as we like, day-tripping all over this part of the Dordogne to see world-famous we can kick back and unwind at the Villa, never having to get into the car, as all we could need are at the house, or in the village on our doorstep. We felt instantly 'at home' with the Villa the first time we saw it - and the attachment grew when we stepped out onto the terrace to take in those beautiful views of Monpazier. And because we have both Villa and cottage on one site, it's the perfect base for our extended family & friends to gather.

What makes this property unique

Nothing beats the stunning views of ancient Monpazier over sunset drinks on the terrace. Instant peace and contentment!
