Inthelonggrass cottage has had a makeover! The cottage has had a refresh and continues to provide clean, affordable family and small group accommodation in a beautiful bush setting.
The views are outstanding, the birdlife abundant and the air as pure as you will find in the Otways.
If you are looking for a base to explore the area our cottage is ideal.
We are situated just 30 minutes from Lorne, 40 minutes from Apollo Bay
and a short drive to numerous other destinations including Lake Elizabeth,
The Otway Fly and Erskine Falls.
Having lived and worked here for over 30 years we can help you plan whatever sort of holiday you are looking for.

For those of you who enjoy mountain bike riding we are just a few minutes ride from the Yaugher trail head mountain bike tracks. The extensive network of tracks are some of the best in Australia and we have free maps available detailing the rides from beginners to advanced.

The Otways national park is also close by to enjoy strolls in bush full of wildlife.

We offer you comfort, space, great local knowledge, peace and quiet and flexibility from as low as $150 per night.

We are an easy 2 hour drive from Melbourne and the new Geelong bypass makes the trip a breeze!

The cottage sleeps up to 6 people with a well equipped kitchen, shower, bath
and plenty of outdoor living space to enjoy the magnificent views. We also
welcome pets and the yard is fully fenced.

Our cottage is equipped with 4 single and 1 queen bed, heating and cooling,
full size fridge, BBQ and DVD player. All linen is supplied and pets are welcome by arrangement.

Lovely restful & close to everything

Lovely, clean, well equipped and close to local attractions. Beautiful enclosed yard for our pooch to roam safely.

Not As It Seems

Online photos are not as it seems. Arrived to a house where every room was covered in spiders and cobwebs. Black mould in laundry ceiling and a dangerous aray of powerboards plugged into double adapters. Then came bed time, where we discovered dog hairs on most bed sheets. Not sure why, but part of the house had an internal raised flooring, im 6"2 and the ceiling was a foot higher than me. Located on a huge farm , we were shocked to see how close the stayz house was so close to the main residence.

Quiet forest retreat

The cottage is located on a farm between Barwon downs and Forrest. A short drive to Forrest general store for a daily coffee highly recommended. Day trips to Lorne and Apollo bay are also recommended if you are comfortable with the windy roads in the area. Erskine falls is also not far and worth a look, overall a very scenic and relaxing trip.

Peaceful retreat with all amenities

Easy to find and once there very clean and tidy. Fully equipped kitchen, comfotabel lounge and bedding. Good internet connection and full tv streaming access. Waking to bird song and kookaburra calls we started our days with breakfast on the verandah, surrounded by bush and overlooking the farm and cows, spent our days exploring the otways' many waterfalls and walking trails, with our evenings catching up on crime tv. Lovely cottage and very helpful host, highly recommended for otways and great ocean road holidays. My dog loved it here too.

We are long time Otway residents and enjoy sharing our beautiful property with others.

Why they chose this property

The cottage name is drawn from my experience with an elderly indigenous man in the 80’s. I met him when I was a social worker in Darwin Centrelink. He was being denied the pension as he led a traditional nomadic lifestyle and therefore had no fixed address. When I asked him where he likes to be he said “in the longgrass...a place in the bush I love to be” . I duly recorded his address as Inthelonggrass and he went off with the income security he deserved. We returned to Victoria and bought our own place in the bush. I don’t think he will mind me honouring him by using his words to name our own place....inthelonggrass...in the bush where we love to be.

If you want a place to relax, reflect, read or just stare into space, the cottage is for you. With no other guests on the property, the cottage space is entirely yours to enjoy. Set well off the road, the bird life is abundant. Wake to kookaburras and magpies to welcome the day and watch the world go by.
