About this property

1860 Luxury Accommodation

Have you ever stayed in an original 1860's timber slab hut? This is no ordinary building and will make your stay in Beechworth very memorable. 1860 once had mud floors and a shingle roof but has been lovingly restored over many years to offer couples luxury, tranquillity and total privacy - an amazing transformation from its humble beginnings. It's romantic and built with an eye for detail, from the well stocked pantry to the craftsmanship and skill of the restoration.

With an open fire, double bath, huge leather lounge, king sized bed and full kitchen, 1860 overlooks Spring Creek and the surrounding parklands of Lake Sambell. The decor is simple, elegant and of very high quality (with no lace or doilies in sight). 1860 is a 5 minute walk to the centre of Beechworth, has off-street parking and is at the end of a quiet laneway.

1860 was voted in the Top 100 best new discoveries in Travel & Leisure Magazine and was awarded 'Most Environmentally Sustainable Business' in the 2011 Shire of Indigo Business Awards.

Built in the 1860's by a timber feller & carpenter, 1860 was deconstructed piece by piece and moved from Taggerty to Beechworth to save it from the ravages of time & weather. It was rebuilt using traditional methods to maintain the integrity and historic value of the building.

Fully self contained for couples, 1860 is packed with features to make your stay truly memorable.

About the host

We live and work in the beautiful town of Beechworth. Originally from Melbourne, we switched to bring our kids up in a small town, with fresh air and beautiful nature nearby. We love mountain bike riding, camping in the nearby national parks and the restaurants, wineries and breweries that surround Beechworth.

Why they chose this property

1860 is a totally unique building. It is an original timber 'slab hut', built in the 1860's using traditional Australian techniques by a timber feller and carpenter to house his family in the forests outside of Melbourne.

We purchased the building from a farm located 3 hours from Beechworth. We deconstructed it, numbered all the timber slabs and transported the pieces back to Beechworth on a truck. Over the next 4 years, we rebuilt 1860. With our own mobile timber mill, we milled the timber required, dismantled buildings to rescue beautiful jarrah and redgum flooring and deconstructed circa 1860's stables to secure enough timber slabs for the kitchen and bathroom.

The building has been restored with respect and sensitivity, to preserve the ambience the building and add modern day luxuries.

What makes this property unique

1860 is a building built on principles of sustainability and low embodied energy. The building has been re-purposed into luxury accommodation with original timbers milled in the 1860's. It is like no other building in Victoria as it retains its unique character but adds all the comforts of the modern era.
