About the Owner

Marjory McKnight was brought up in South London and later Redcar (North Yorkshire): renowned for its magnificent sandy beach. Her husband Hugh spent his childhood on the banks of the River Thames at Shepperton, west of London. In 2004 they decided to emigrate to France from their home by the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire, England. They now live in a farmhouse alongside the navigable River Lot between Bordeaux and Toulouse. They have both been inland waterways enthusiasts and boat owners for many years. Hugh has specialized in canal writing and photography for most of his life. Experience gained in the UK with a small portfolio of rental properties encouraged them to invest in a French seaside apartment. Their three year search of the Mediterranean Coast failed to produce anything completely suitable. However, during their first ever visit to Soulac-sur-Mer, they discovered 'Côté Océan', then nearing completion. The brand new building rose proudly from the sand dune, a 21st century version of a unique style of architecture: the 'Villas Soulacaises'.It was an extreme case of love at first sight. An hour later, they had phoned the owner and their offer to buy was accepted.

"Just to confirm that we received our Security Deposit cheque last week. Thank you. We had a great week in Soulac with mostly very good weather. We even braved the surf on a number of occasions. The Apartment was excellent and in top class condition. We did our best to return it to you as we received it. The Soulac Air Festival was excellent and great fun around the town during the Soulac 1900 Weekend. We found the restaurants in Soulac excellent and very good value. Cycling and walking were the high points for us. We rented bikes for three days and covered a lot of ground. The trails were excellent. Overall, a great week and we might well come back to you again in the future."

Wonderful holiday

We have just spent 2 weeks in this lovely apartment, and found it to be just as described. It is ideal for 2 adults, we were 3 as our son joined us, and it was fine, if a little cosy. The garden was ideal for our 2 dogs, and the beautiful sunsets made each evening special. It is ideally situated for the beach, with a short walk to the shops and restaurants. We ate several times at both La Villa Soulacaise and Le Viet, as well as other restaurants, but the kitchen facilities at the apartment are perfect should you wish to eat in. The shower is the best we've ever found in a holiday property, with the statement "copious hot water" true. Soulac-sur-mer is a lovely resort, and we had a very relaxing holiday, not wanting to venture far from the apartment, although we did the obligatory visit to a chateau (La Tour de By highly recommended). Marjory and Hugh were very helpful in providing information and answering any questions, and we are thinking of booking again for next year.

Fantastic ,perfect

Well what a fantastic time we had at your apartment! The apartment was perfect for our needs and was so well located. The beach is as good as you get anywhere in the world and the dog is now suffering post holiday blues having spent a lot of her time running in the sand and body surfing in the sea.

I have been in the Royan and Bordeaux areas before but never discovered this gem of a town. It is beautiful and reminds me of France from years ago. We used the market and Carrefour and even strayed to Lidl. We visited a lovely vineyard and somewhat overspent on our budget there, much to the proprietor's delight. We are definitely considering returning to Soulac next year.

Just Perfect Location, Layout and Amenities

The owners were very efficient and quick with our inquiry also supplying us with lots of useful information Their genuine love of Soulac sur Mer really inspired us to visit a part of France we had never visited before.

The Décor and furnishings of "Côté Océan" were excellent there is everything to make for the perfect holiday for eating in or dining out. Couldn't fault it!

Wonderful views of the Ocean,The vast beaches stretching all the way to the Spanish Border. Fantastic walks for our dog Angus who had a brilliant time so is ideal for dog walking.

There is an Indoor Market with its huge variety of fresh fish and seafood and the Centre Ville with its shops and restaurants all within a short walking distance of the property.

The fascinating architecture of the town's historic villas which is documented in the books at Cote ocean

Watching boats sailing by, surfers in the waves, kite flyers, cyclists of all ages. wind surfers and investigating the bunkers on the beach are just a few of the many attractions at Soulac Sur Mer.

We are considering returning for another holiday next year and would strongly recommend it to friends and family!!

We had one of the best holidays ever, it was in fact perfect and fitted and met our expectations over and above.

We loved the apartment, your meticulous guide, the high standard of furnishings etc, which was much appreciated, we loved Soulac, the sea, the beach , the walks, the weather. We didn’t travel far, we didn’t need too.

Perfect getaway

This apartment is beautifully appointed, immaculately clean and very well equipped for those who wish to take advantage of the local food markets and do their own cooking. The floor space is small but the design is so efficient and the decor so well chosen, that it feels light and spacious. The shower provides plentiful hot water and good pressure. In addition, the pictures on the website do not lie - you really are that close to the beach. Ideal , since you are also only 3-4 mins walk into the main shopping centre of the town.

The owners of the apartment showed a real customer focus, communicating regularly with me in advance of the holiday to offer helpful directions for driving and providing an extensive manual with details of local attractions, ferry timetables etc.

The resort itself was just a joy. We did not hear English being spoken for a whole week - this seems to be a place where French people holiday. As such there was none of the British 'pub' culture that has blighted so many other beautiful places across Europe. The restaurants are very good quality and the seafood in particular is terrific. The local market in the centre of town was the source of several wonderful homecooked meals and it was a real thrill to try out my French in order to buy all our ingredients.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this apartment, and this destination. These particular owners made a difference too - they make you feel most welcome

'Côté Océan' commands a superb view of the Atlantic, with one of Europe's finest sandy beaches within seconds of its small front garden. Yet all the amenities of a delightful 19th century seaside resort are to be found a short stroll away. A remarkable choice of restaurants offering splendid French cuisine, where seafood reigns supreme. In addition, the nearby world famous Médoc vineyards produce wines that are second to none, anywhere. Soulac-sur-Mer is quite simply the most perfect little seaside town we have ever discovered.

Delightful maritime-themed one-bedroom, ground-floor apartment overlooking the ocean and vast sandy beaches. Suitable 2/4 guests. One of just six homes in an impressive building, completed for 2012. We are thrilled with its location on the town's sea-front promenade, a few seconds from one of Europe's finest beaches. It is close to the many amenities of Soulac: with excellent shops, over twenty restaurants, bars and clubs and a superb daily indoor food market with a stunning variety of seafood including locally produced oysters, crabs and prawns. Cinema and a World Heritage Site church. The town was developed as a resort from around 1870 and now features 500 distinctive villas in the unique Soulacaise style.

A recent Internet 'blog' temptingly provides the following description with which you just have to agree: 'Soulac is the most beautiful and contagiously wonderful sea-side town France has to offer. It doesn't disappoint. In fact, Soulac never does. The weather averaged 28 degrees throughout the week, swimming in the sea was exhilarating and the bar scene was as good as I could have asked for. The place is as near paradise as you can get and without the superficiality and expense that spoils the south east coast. Just Google it online and consider it for your next holiday spot. I promise it'll be worth it!'

Many visitors want nothing more than to relax by the sea and perhaps eat at a different restaurant each day. Equally, this little-known gem which feels as if it is situated at the end of the world, has lots to offer the more active tourist. Attractions include:

• Surfing. Do it yourself or just watch the experts. Conditions are among the very best in Europe. Equipment and tuition available.

• Cycling. Extensive biking network through seaside, marshland and forest scenery. Bike hire.

• Riding. Explore the pine woods on horseback.

• Boat trips in the Gironde Estuary or out to the 400-year old Cordouan Lighthouse with its rooms in Louis XIV décor.

• Sea fishing in skippered motor boats.

With its on-site private parking and secure enclosed garden, the apartment is ideal for well-behaved dogs, with endless walking possibilities on the beaches or through the pine forests. During the Summer Peak Season, the town of Soulac is splendidly animated. It reminds you of what relaxing at the seaside used to be like in the 1950s. This is the often lost world of 'Monsieur Hulot's Holiday'. Yet within a few minutes walk you can reach beaches seemingly unchanged from the time when the Romans first came here 2,000 years ago.
