Amazing property in a lovely area

  • 5 of 5

The pictures that are shown of this property do not do it justice, it is even better than it looks on the website. The house is beautiful and enormous with more that enough space for 10 people to stay together comfortably.

Everything you need is there. Even had the friendly neighbour give us some fresh eggs!

Reassuring that the housekeeper is contactable whilst there if needed.

Easy to reach restaurants and places of interest all a short drive away. Would highly recommend this property and would love to come back another year. Thanks for lending us your home!!

A wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place to stay. The location is quiet and secluded yet there is a town nearby and more importantly a large SuperU (about 2 miles). The building is large and spacious and very well appointed. The pool is a good size. The maid attends once a week but is on call to assist with issues. We only had three things that needed to be dealt with. A small bug infestation on the upper floor, green swimming pool water and a wasp swarm from the property next door. None of these were the fault of the owner and didn't detract from the holiday at all. The villa is great fro visiting Lourdes. I would recommend this villa.

Beautiful house in lovely tranquil locatiopn

  • 5 of 5

We had a really lovely holiday staying in the Petit Chateau. The house and gardens are really beautiful and very well equipped. The pool and outside eating area is also really lovely and we really enjoyed alfresco eating.

We found lots to do in the area - the cycling was great and we made plenty of trips into the pyrenees which were just stunning.

We also visiting lots of the surrounding villages which made for good cycling trips and the the nearest local village Maubourgeut has a selection of restaurants and patisseries - we would recommend Hotel De France as the food was v good.

Peter and Jean could not have been more welcoming on our arrival and the locals in Larreule were all so friendly and warm.

A lovely place to holiday - we would highly recommend it.

Beautiful. The most relaxing week imaginable.

  • 5 of 5

We came to celebrate our parents' 40th wedding anniversary and father's 60th birthday - 8 adults and two small children. We couldn't have picked a better house or location. The space that the house and gardens offer make it possible for relaxing and playing to happen at the same time. There was ample space for dining, be that leisurely breakfasts or family BBQs. We found a fete in Maubourget and lovely walks around the village and woodlands. We cycled, we day tripped to the Pyrannees, and the weather was stunning. We honestly could not have asked for more. Thank you to Jean and Pete for such a wonderful holiday! We'll most certainly be back. Becca, Tristan, Chris, Paul, Jack, Frank, Maria, Quentin, John and Joy.

Most relaxing destination

  • 5 of 5

Having travelled to many parts of the world, this is firmly our most relaxing destination.

If you are looking for a real French country experience then this is it.

The house is every bit as appealing as it looks in the pictures and the welcome from the owners Jean & Pete is unbeatable. This is a well renovated home with modern facilities.

Having photographed different parts of the Pyrenees over the last 3 years we found this to be an ideal location for access to the mountains.

As well as beautiful countryside and views we were surprised at the abundance of wildlife around the village and surrounding area. Walks are plentiful and the pool provides cooling rest at the end of the day watching the sun set over a glass of local wine.

We recently returned from our second visit and are hoping to return again soon.

In Larreule, life goes on at a very relaxed pace, it is tempting just to sit in the sun, listen to the wildlife, watch the birds of prey circle over the pasture land, and let it wash over you. However, it would be a pity not to explore the area with so much to see and do nearby. The list below (which is far from comprehensive) gives you an idea of what is available in the area. Locally; Madiran is the wine producing area, using the tannat grape. There are 1,300 hectares (3,200 acres) of Madiran vineyards, a wine that is particularly high in antidioxdants. Maubourguet; the nearest town, which is situated in the south-west of France, not too far from the Spanish border, is a typically Gascon market town with the added charm that comes from its proximity to, and affinity with, the Basque country and culture. Lovely half-timbered houses (colombage) jostle for space in the town, whilst out in the glorious rolling countryside there are delightful L-shaped farmhouses with distinctively shaped rooftops.

Maubourguet’s amenities:

Maubourguet, although rural in essence, offers amenities such as supermarkets, restaurants, banking facilities, schools and garages, and is close enough to several larger towns to make long journeys non essential.

Every Tuesday morning, if you drag yourself out of bed and make your way down to the town centre, you will be rewarded by a veritable feast for the senses. All French markets are a delight, but this is never more so than in this ancient region where the rural traditions are still holding strong, and the gastronomy is second to none. Food, with particular attention paid to its freshness and quality, is a serious business in this part of France.

Dining out:

If you don’t make it to the market early enough to buy the best produce for yourself, don’t worry, just treat yourself to a meal at one of the town’s many restaurants.

Day tripping… a cornucopia of cultures!

As Maubourguet is centrally situated in France’s deep south-west, it makes a great base for days out to see the surrounding areas. It is well within the bounds of a day trip to pop into Spain, or head west for Pau. Tarbes is close by (always good for a rugby match!), as is the pilgrim town of Lourdes. further west is the atlantic coast which boasts Biarritz and Hossegor, with golden beaches. To the east is Andorra, for some tax free shopping, the rose-coloured city of Toulouse, or the beautiful mediaeval city of Carcassonne. It seems that everything is possible from here, which makes a little rural town seem like the cultural capital of southern France!

The town has a long and proud association with horses and horsemanship. Equestrian centres abound here, so don’t forget to pack your hard hat because there can be few better ways to discover this beautiful region than from the back of a horse.

The Pyrenées – A huge national park with hundreds of miles of walking/cycling paths and activities: hiking, rock climbing, rafting/canoeing, paragliding, caving, road cycling, mountain biking, horse riding. Golf: Courses at Lannemezan/ Tarbes/ Pau/ Bagnères-de-Bigorre. Winter sports: skiing & snowboarding (nearest resort La Mongie – Barèges, is the biggest in the French Pyrenées), snow shoe-ing, cross country skiing, ice climbing. Tour de France: passing through Tarbes and the Pyrenées in July. Wildlife and nature: bird watching, wild flowers, butterflies. Historical towns: Tarbes, Lourdes, Pau, Auch. Châteaux: E.g. Château de Laas, Château de Pau, Château d'Arricau Bordes, Château de Mauvezin, Château de Tostat
