About Graham and Jenny Venters

Jenny and I have both been in the Licenced trade and I am a quaified Chef. We are both retired now and live next door to the cottage in the main house, so we are usually available to advise or assist whenever needed. However we will never be a nuisance to you and only seek to enhance you holiday experience.

Graham and Jenny Venters purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Graham and Jenny Venters chose Estrela da Calheta

We bought the main house in 2009, it was in a very bad state but as soon as we saw it we just fell in love with it and so we renovated it and then we did the cottage 3 years later in early 2012. It was a derilict 'Cow House' and we did the reconstruction sympathetically to the original style and in a manner that we would be happy to stay in it ourselves, Hence the cottage is very well equipped to a high standard and is very comfortable. We chose to live in this area as it is very quiet and the views are out of this world. The house and cottage are a little off the beaten track and so you will experience the 'Real' Madeira as against the Tourist images usually offered. Also, being at 400 mtrs altitude it does not get too hot in Summer or too Cold in Winter.

What makes this cottage unique

We offer a range of additional services with the cottage ranging from an evening meal service, boat trips for big game or bottom fishing and airport transfers. We can also recommend a small family run car hire company.

Guestbook comments from the owner

After staying in Funchal on many occasions we thought with a little bit of trepidation it was time to visit a different part of Maderia . We are so glad we did. Set up in the hills above Caletha the cottage has great views down into a valley and out to sea . You could watch kestrels and buzzards from the balcony. The directions given but Jenny and Graham where spot on , it took around 45 minutes to drive to the cottage from the airport mostly on the express way . I think a car is a must . We where made very welcome in the small bar which joins the village shop . We spoke no Portuguese and they spoke very little English but some how we spent a couple of hours on a couple of evenings chatting in the bar . The cottage is in a good location to visit other parts of the island . The cottage had every thing you would need for a holiday . Ideal for walkers and people who just like to sight see.

Absolutely amazing views and a charming cottage!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful get away location and such an adorable cottage! Graham and Jenny turned a "cow shed" into the most comfortable, welcoming cottage would could ever want. They have made sure that it is stocked with everything you could feasibly need during your stay in Madeira. We chartered Graham's boat one day and he and Jenny prepared our catch in a lovely dinner on our terrace for us that evening for dinner! We can't wait to go back for another visit!

Owner's Response: Thank you, it was a pleasure to have you stay with us and we hope that when you come again you stay a little longer. We really enjoy it when our guests go out fishing as we then bring the fish back and have a BBQ on the roof terrace, if our guests don't go fishing and we have a fishing charter we then invite the cottage guests and fishing guests to get together for a fish BBQ and it has always turned out to be a great success as complete strangers become good friends !

Sunsets on the balcony

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is in a magnificent position overlooking a valley which leads down to the sea. On the balcony during the evening you can see lots of bird life including kestrels, and if you're very lucky, the local owl. The sun sets on the other side of the valley, a different experience each day. In the morning the sun lights the top of the surrounding hills. The cottage is very well equipped, with lots of thoughtful features - a torch for exploring the levada tunnels, lots of maps and guide books. To greet us were a bottle of wine, bread, butter, home-made jam and eggs from Jenny's chickens. Jenny and Graham being just next door meant that any questions we had were quickly answered. We had some wonderful walks on the levadas - breathtaking views and lots of interest. Altogether a very good holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our cottage. It is so lovely to sit and watch the kestrels and buzzards in the day and in the evening while watching the sun set to see the barn owls. So for a relaxing holiday away from the tourist areas but close enough to the beaches, levada walks and main road book your 2018 holiday now.

The property met all of our expectations

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the cottage, it exactly as it is described, the views from the balcony and roof terrace are fabulous. It has all the equipment and facilities that we required and was very clean.

The owners were very nice and helpful, they were available whenever if you required them you just had to ask but otherwise your privacy was respected and you were left alone. They gave good advice about walks, restaurants, bars and places to visit . We would recommend the cottage to anyone who likes a quiet life in a village not full of tourists. We would definitely visit again.

Beautiful area, spotless cottage. Hospitable owners

  • 5 of 5

We have had an amazing 2 weeks. Jenny and Graham are brilliant hosts. A good mix of being helpful when required but also allowing your privacy. They have shown us the way of Madeiran life. The cottage is beautiful and the views to die for. Will miss that little cottage and its private balcony and roof terrace. A car is essential if you want to get around. This is perfectly placed on the sunny south side of the island with easy access to the beautiful west and north. Every turn has another beautiful view. Amazing!

Owner's Response: Thank you, it was a pleasure to have you stay with us. We are always so pleased that our guests have had a good holiday especially when it is their first visit to Madeira. As we are located in a small village you are able to get the feel of the "real Madeira" away from the tourist traps. The people in the village are really friendly and always say hello even though they speak no English. It is an excellent base to get to the Levada walks, beach and main road to access the whole island but then to come back and relax on the balcony or terrace and watch the sunset.

Highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Thank you it was lovely to have you back again. We feel we must share your lovely comments left in the guest book - "Having visited in 2012and promised to return we have finally done so, albeit this time with our baby in tow!! We have had an excellent week here and yet again have been very well looked after by Jenny and Graham. We spent our first week with 4 days of walking (the baby giggled throughout the Calheta tunnel at the start of the 25 Fontes walk) 1 boat trip with Graham and 1 day exploring the beautiful North West coast, we definitely recommend Porto Moniz and the aquarium there. Thanks again Graham and Jenny for helping us do the impossible and find Isy's engagement ring in the sands of Calheta Beach - amazing luck!!! We fully intend to return, hopefully within the year and certainly before another 5 years have passed!"

Owner's Response: Thank you, we enjoyed having you. We feel we must share the lovely comments you left in the guest book - "Thank you Graham and Jenny for the great customer care you have provided on our 3 week stay. You have been lovely hosts and it was nice to be able to have a meal with you and find out all about how you came to live here. The cottage is wonderful, very much like a home from home with everything you need to provide a comfortable stay. What a bonus to have both mountain and sea views from the balcony and sun terrace, although we didn't use the latter as we were out walking almost every day, not just on the Levadas but exploring other footpaths also. Paul do Mar was a great place to sit and chill and watch the high waves and Jardim do Mar was another favourite, you can meander around the cobbled streets and enjoy the lovely promenade . All in all a fab place to be to explore this Western part of Madeira"

Our cottage is located on the outskirts of Estrela which is the commercial centre for the Calheta Region. We are withing easy walking distance of the village and some Lavada Walks . Also some of the most spectacular Lavada Walks (the 25 Fontes at Rabacal) are within our region and are easily accessed by car. The Marina is but a short drive from the cottage and this has a number of Restaurants and Bars. There is also a sand beach next to the Marina with a safe swimming area, although you may choose to go out to sea with Graham on his boat and swim in the Ocean or view the Whales and Dolphins or even go fishing for your supper! The boat is fully licenced and insured. 15 Kilometers away is Cabo Girao, the second highest Sea Cliff in the World with a cable car from the top to almost the bottom and a view point with glass floor.Swim in the natural pools at Porto Moniz which is just a short drive away.
