About Graham and Jenny Venters

Jenny and I have both been in the Licenced trade and I am a quaified Chef. We are both retired now and live next door to the cottage in the main house, so we are usually available to advise or assist whenever needed. However we will never be a nuisance to you and only seek to enhance you holiday experience.

Graham and Jenny Venters purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Graham and Jenny Venters chose Estrela da Calheta

We bought the main house in 2009, it was in a very bad state but as soon as we saw it we just fell in love with it and so we renovated it and then we did the cottage 3 years later in early 2012. It was a derilict 'Cow House' and we did the reconstruction sympathetically to the original style and in a manner that we would be happy to stay in it ourselves, Hence the cottage is very well equipped to a high standard and is very comfortable. We chose to live in this area as it is very quiet and the views are out of this world. The house and cottage are a little off the beaten track and so you will experience the 'Real' Madeira as against the Tourist images usually offered. Also, being at 400 mtrs altitude it does not get too hot in Summer or too Cold in Winter.

What makes this cottage unique

We offer a range of additional services with the cottage ranging from an evening meal service, boat trips for big game or bottom fishing and airport transfers. We can also recommend a small family run car hire company.

Guestbook comments from the owner

After staying in Funchal on many occasions we thought with a little bit of trepidation it was time to visit a different part of Maderia . We are so glad we did. Set up in the hills above Caletha the cottage has great views down into a valley and out to sea . You could watch kestrels and buzzards from the balcony. The directions given but Jenny and Graham where spot on , it took around 45 minutes to drive to the cottage from the airport mostly on the express way . I think a car is a must . We where made very welcome in the small bar which joins the village shop . We spoke no Portuguese and they spoke very little English but some how we spent a couple of hours on a couple of evenings chatting in the bar . The cottage is in a good location to visit other parts of the island . The cottage had every thing you would need for a holiday . Ideal for walkers and people who just like to sight see.

Deserves 5 stars!

  • 5 of 5

Jenny and Graham are lovely – welcoming, kind, and attentive to detail. They keep everything in the property ship-shape, and make sure everything is thoughtfully ready for your arrival.

The place is well-equipped for hanging out, basing a levada hiking adventure, cooking up your catch-of-the-day, or just watching the sun set over the sea across the valley with a glass of Poncha in hand. The roof terrace is especially nice on warm days. The property is one of many quaint and pretty houses on the hills above Calheta, and has a lovely view.

Recommended for a couple or a solo traveller, although Jenny and Graham were thoughtful in providing us a comfortable cot.

Thanks Jenny & Graham!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely review. It was a pleasure having you stay with us. We base the cottage on a couple sharing and have a double bed, we have a fold down bed (cot as said in Canada) which can be used for a child or 3rd person or if it is 2 people that wish to sleep separately. The fold down bed can be set up in the lounge or in the bedroom. So for a relaxing holiday away from the tourist areas with beautiful views book now, we look forward to having you.

We had a great stay, it was very comfortable. With lots of little extras like maps, bus times, DvDs, Reading books, thermos flasks, etc. etc.

The views are fantastic, we want to return when it is hot so that we can sunbathe on our own rooftop terrace!!

We had a lovely meal cooked for us by Graham and Jenny, they were great hosts.

Thank you,

Liz and Trev.

Owner's Response: Thank you, it was a pleasure to have you and we look forward to seeing you again in the near future. It is a shame that the weather went cooler as you came, our previous guests were using the roof terrace all over Christmas and New Year !! For a relaxing holiday away from the tourist areas in the "real Madeira" yet close enough to the beach / marina, Levada walks and main roads book now to enjoy our spectacular views and beautiful sunsets from the balcony or roof terrace.

Fantastic view and lovely hosts!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I have just returned from a six day stay in Madeira at Palheiro Cottage in Calheta. Jenny and Graham are such lovely people and it was a pleasure staying in their property (they live next door should you have any questions). The views from the balcony were outstanding and the cottage was adequately equipped (and clean and tidy on arrival) for our stay. As we love to cook, we were particularly pleased that the kitchen was fully stocked with a good selection of equipment (including decent (sharpened) knives, garlic press, matching dishes, and full assortment of drinking glasses. The local people were so kind and genuine, and we would also highly recommended Carlos Dony of Status Flamingo Rent a Car, if you need to rent a car on the island. He was absolutely brilliant! We looked at many places before settling on and eventually booking Palherio Cottage and we are pleased we chose to stay here. If you're looking for peaceful, safe, clean, and cozy, then this rental is for you (best suited for two people). The only criticism is that the mattress on the bed was too firm/hard for us (but that could be because we are older). And finally just a caution as we found this quite challenging - due to the property being situated at an elevated level, the roads are very narrow and can be quite intimidating if you're not accustomed to driving in mountainous or hilly conditions (again this may not be an issue for other travellers).

Owner's Response: Thank you, it was a pleasure to have you stay with us.We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and found that you had everything you needed for cooking your own meals. We chose a firm mattress for the bed rather than a soft mattress and have had good reports from other guests saying how comfortable it is, we are sorry that you found it too hard. If we had known you could have tried the mattress from our spare bed in the house. Madeira is a hilly island and many of the roads can be narrow, it can be a bit daunting at first if you are not used to it but usually within a few days people get accustomed to it and as long as you take your time and relax it is fine.

Absolutely amazing views and a charming cottage!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful get away location and such an adorable cottage! Graham and Jenny turned a "cow shed" into the most comfortable, welcoming cottage would could ever want. They have made sure that it is stocked with everything you could feasibly need during your stay in Madeira. We chartered Graham's boat one day and he and Jenny prepared our catch in a lovely dinner on our terrace for us that evening for dinner! We can't wait to go back for another visit!

Owner's Response: Thank you, it was a pleasure to have you stay with us and we hope that when you come again you stay a little longer. We really enjoy it when our guests go out fishing as we then bring the fish back and have a BBQ on the roof terrace, if our guests don't go fishing and we have a fishing charter we then invite the cottage guests and fishing guests to get together for a fish BBQ and it has always turned out to be a great success as complete strangers become good friends !

Sunsets on the balcony

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is in a magnificent position overlooking a valley which leads down to the sea. On the balcony during the evening you can see lots of bird life including kestrels, and if you're very lucky, the local owl. The sun sets on the other side of the valley, a different experience each day. In the morning the sun lights the top of the surrounding hills. The cottage is very well equipped, with lots of thoughtful features - a torch for exploring the levada tunnels, lots of maps and guide books. To greet us were a bottle of wine, bread, butter, home-made jam and eggs from Jenny's chickens. Jenny and Graham being just next door meant that any questions we had were quickly answered. We had some wonderful walks on the levadas - breathtaking views and lots of interest. Altogether a very good holiday.

The property met all of our expectations

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the cottage, it exactly as it is described, the views from the balcony and roof terrace are fabulous. It has all the equipment and facilities that we required and was very clean.

The owners were very nice and helpful, they were available whenever if you required them you just had to ask but otherwise your privacy was respected and you were left alone. They gave good advice about walks, restaurants, bars and places to visit . We would recommend the cottage to anyone who likes a quiet life in a village not full of tourists. We would definitely visit again.
