ABOUT THE AREA
- Southern Illinois Wine Trail
A big draw for the region is the Shawnee Wine Trail. With over a dozen wineries in the area, there's no shortage of styles and cool places to visit! Many of them offer live music on the weekends when the weather is warm (which is most of the year), as well as delicious food and scenery that helps you kick back and relax. Let us know what style of wine you like and we can point you to some places you are sure to love! We can also help you make arrangements for a shuttled private tour! As us for details.

- Farmers Market, Fruit Stands & Agritourism
The Southern Illinois region is known as "Little Egypt" because of its proximity to the great Mississippi River and because of its fertile land! The region is full of farms, orchards, and groves of all sorts and hub of entertainment. Carbondale, plays host to one of the oldest farmers markets in the mid-west and is certainly one of the largest in the region! It is held on Saturdays in the Murdale Shopping Center area of Carbondale. So, if you are into cooking, you will love all of the heirlooms, unique varietals, and cottage industry products found at this terrific market. (Available April-November).

Want other culinary stops? Area towns have festivals, U-pick fruit farms, farm tours and other agritourism jaunts, as well as great area markets! Ask us what’s going on when you’ll be in town! We’re happy to help you make a memory.

- Rock Climbing, Hiking, Sightseeing & Water Sports
There is a little something for everyone in Southern Illinois. The region is famous for rock climbing, hiking, mushroom hunting, and water sport destinations!

Closest to the house - The Pomona Natural Birdge is within walking distance, Cedar Lake is just minutes away and is a great spot for getting on the water and picnics!

Check out the Shawnee National Forest - known for its annual snake migration every April!

Giant City Park with some of the best rock climbing to be had in the region!

Devil's Backbone, Crab Orchard Lake and the National Wildlife Refuge - terrific for bird watching - are other great natural attractions in the area! Trail of Tears State Park, . . . to name just a few.

Petroglyphs, drawings by Native Americans on rock faces and in caves, are something unique to the region. Visiting these sites is something like a treasure hunt for hikers and is perfect for history buffs, too!

- Restaurants & Things To Do
Just 15 minutes away in Murphysboro visitors will find 17th Street BBQ - voted the #1 BBQ in America by Bon Appetit magazine and the Food Network! There's also The Rule of Pie - which makes pies from scratch daily, Cummares Italian Restaurant, Faye’s (breakfast & lunch), Brews Brothers pub and great antique stores and mom and pop shops downtown. The town also offers Riverside Park, which banks the Big Muddy River. The park is known for its dog park, paved walking trails and terrific playgrounds! And, though technically in the the town of Ava, Scratch Brewery draws people from all over to their craft brewery and restaurant, so when you come be sure to put them on your list. It's a small trek to get to, but is totally worth it!

Carbondale is the main hub for the region. It is about 20-25 minutes from The Barn using HWY 127. Carbondale is the home of the Salukis! Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a world class teaching and research institution. Like any college town, you can pick from any number of terrific restaurants and night spots or cruise out in the morning for a hot cup of coffee and from scratch breakfast at one of the many local restaurants. We love Harbaugh's, The Co-op, Longbranch Coffee House, Thai Taste, Newell House, Global Gourmet, The Hanger 9 Bar, and so many others. Please ask us for tailored suggestions! We are glad to help. The University Mall in Carbondale has a bevy of stores for shopping, plus a state of the art theater. If you are looking for something a little more mom and pop, the downtown area of Carbondale, plus the smaller towns in the area like Murphysboro and Cobden are just the ticket. They offer craft stores, antique shops, cool home goods and clothing stores and knickknack stores where bargain hunters can find a treasure!

Nearby, the town of Cobden is home to quaint art galleries, antique shops and restaurants such as the Yellow Moon Cafe, a hidden gem for great desserts, local fare, and live music on weekends. On the streets of Cobden you can also find the Taquería Pequeña, an amazing “little house of tacos” and The Old Feed Store, a music venue featuring local and national talent. The region has numerous festivals: Brew Fest, Wine Festivals, Murphysboro Apple Festival, music festivals of all sorts in downtown Carbondale. Both Carbondale and Murphysboro have fantastic Thursday night Sunset Concerts in the summer! Ask us about what might be going on during the time you plan to visit and we'll send you some great ideas!

Murphysboro's Riverside Park offers a lovely spot for kids to play and has a dog park, too!

- Winter weather and the road conditions they create cannot be predicted. There are many factors involved, like the duration and severity of the weather, the vehicle being driven (all-wheel, 4-wheel drive, front wheel drive, rear wheel drive) and the expertise of the driver in bad weather and on rural roads, and these can all play a significant role. Highway 127 and Pomona Road are plowed by the county. Godwin Road and both driveways are flat, but are not plowed. Because of these things, in the event of significant winter weather we will be happy to credit your payment toward a booking within 1 year of the original one. No refund or partial refund will be given if the original reservation is kept.

- Cell Coverage: The predominant carrier for the region is Verizon. Depending on your carrier, cell coverage may be spotty. Please check coverage maps with your carrier to verify coverage if you have a question. A landline phone is available in the cabin with free calling in the continental US.

- Internet: For a rural location, ours is one of the best around. However, it is satellite internet. High usage can result in throttling. For this reason it cannot be used for streaming, gaming, or Zoom meetings. Please note, overage charges may apply with heavy usage.

Thanksgiving at The Barn was a delight!
We celebrated my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary over Thanksgiving at The Barn. The place was so nicely done - bedrooms were perfect and the kitchen well stocked with the tools for us to cook our Thanksgiving feast. The location is easy to get to and nicely secluded. We enjoyed the end of the fall foliage and evenings by the fire pit. We also enjoyed a day at the local wineries! I highly recommend The Barn to families looking for a way to leave the hustle of the city for some country time. Three generations of my family just loved it! Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!

Awesome place in Shawnee National Forest
Our entire family of 15 fell in love with this home. It is very conveniently located to hiking trails and wineries. The 7 children loved the large backyard and playground area as well as all of the games. The adults loved that the kitchen was EXTREMELY well stocked - we’ve done family vacations for 23 years now and this is the best. All of the glass sliding doors let in lots of natural light. We can’t say enough good things about this home! The owners are fabulous people. We had absolutely no negative comments except wanting to stay longer.

Josh and Alexis have travelled all over the world, but they love to call Southern Illinois home! With three children and their various enterprises, they are a busy couple. Josh is originally from the area. After completing school he traveled Europe working as a chef. His love for food eventually turned toward organic farming, so in 2000, he and Alexis bought the 70 acre farm in Pomona. After renovating the properties and turning them into vacation rentals in 2009, Josh went on to play music in area bands and is now very involved in the region's entertainment industry helping to bring performers to the area. Alexis works as a stay-at-home mom, who also donates her time to many worthy causes in the Southern Illinois region.

Why they chose this property

CornerStone Cabins was created in 2009 by Josh and Alexis Brown, but there's more to the story behind the farm on which it is located. We moved into The Loft in August of 2000, and it was there we started a family of our own. Within a few months we began planning for construction on The Barn to be our first Southern Illinois vacation rental. Originally a horse barn with dirt floors, we had a plan to turn The Barn into a place of comfort and luxury. In 2005, after a few years of work and two children later, we decided to move into The Barn. Considering our growing family and the creation of such an extraordinary cabin, we couldn't resist.

In our third year as CornerStone Cabins we realized the need to expand our accommodations. Since The Barn was originally built to be a vacation rental, we decided to move our family up the road and open the doors to the largest cabin rental in Southern Illinois. With the most luxurious lodging on the Southern Illinois wine trail, CornerStone Cabins is now looking to the future and growing to meet the needs of our guests.

We want to thank all of the countless friends and family members that helped to create a place of beauty and relaxation for all to enjoy. It could not have been possible without your help.

We would like to welcome you to your home away from home and we look forward to hosting your stay!

What makes this property unique

The Barn and its sister property, The Loft (#898640), are situated to protect visitors' privacy while also being close enough to enjoy larger gatherings with everyone staying in close proximity to one another. If you are interested in booking both, please let us know.

What our guests love most is our location! The scenery is gorgeous with rolling hills, lots of mature trees, a babbling creek nearby and lots of acreage in a safe rural location that is also convenient to town. There is so much to do in the area you'll want time to explore and see all the sites! That is why we have made weeklong stays so affordable!
