Santa Catalina. Sunny, modern flat, large windows, balconies. Art deco building

Overview

Property

Updated: 26-Nov-2016
Bright, large 3 bed 2 bath, separate kitchen, dining and living room. Free WiFi

SPECIAL FALL 2016!

Light and spacious modernized 3 bedroom 2 full bathrooms apartment (140 sq.m). Has been recently fully renovated with tasteful designer furniture and decorated with contemporary art, keeping the beauty of the original details.

Situated in Santa Catalina, 'the most authentic of Palma neighborhoods', according to the New York Times, it is located in a corner art deco building from 1920 and all the bedrooms have oversized floor to ceiling windows. It is comfortable and welcoming, designed with care. There are three beautiful balconies overseeing a tree lined street. The flat has two full bathrooms and a new very bright kitchen and a separate dining room.

Santa Catalina offers some of the best restaurants of Palma, tapas bars and trendy boutiques, not to mention the colorful market. Located just a walking distance (7 minutes) to the most beautiful area of the Paseo Marítimo, with great views of the Cathedral and Bellver. Also the same distance to the sophisticated shopping area of Jaime III. Free WiFi. Free phone calls.

• 'Santa Catalina remains the most authentic of Palma neighborhoods. It is less touristed the Gothic center; artists live here, and there are a few boutiques and some new, excellent market-to-table restaurants, which have begun to draw foot traffic to the area at night. The market itself still bustles, vigorously, each morning. Bakery stalls sell ensimadas for a euro; others hawk spices, cheese, meat, poultry and, of course, fish.', wrote Sarah Wildman on the article 'Miró’s Majorca' on the New York Times.

• 'Santa Catalina, behind the harbour, is also becoming Chelseafied, although it does have a charming fresh food market where you can grab a coffee, a tapa and a picnic,' wrote Kevin Gould on The Guardian.

• 'Santa Catalina is in the process of being gentrified - although, mercifully, total gentrification is a way off - but the market is still a tremendous place to sample the real Mallorca', Kevyn Whitelaw for The Guardian.

• 'The other place I'd include is the Santa Catalina market in Palma, Majorca, where I live some of the time. A friend introduced me to it, and it has the most wonderful fish and meat stalls', Hugh Montgomery for The Independent.

• 'My usual dinner spot is over in the Santa Catalina area, next door to the neighbourhood's divine food market. I've two favourites and adore both for the same thing: meat. Carnivores will swoon at the offerings of either Es Xoriguer at Calle Fabrica 60 or Txakoli just down the road at number 14. Both pack T-Bone steak in rock salt and sear it on a scorching flame, only to serve it flesh-pink in the centre and perfectly browned on the outside'. The Hedonist at The Independent.

• To the west of the old city walls is Santa Catalina, a developing neighborhood that surrounds the lively Santa Catalina market. In the last few years, a crop of popular cafes and restaurants have turned this quarter into a fledgling foodie destination. Gisela Williams for The New York Times

• Majorca remains a choice spot for a winter weekend abroad. Easily reached and with more than 200 four or five-star hotels to choose from, the island is perfect for a few days of touring and tapas – come rain or shine.

'We get plenty of sun in winter,' says Valerie Crespi-Green, an English nurse who has lived on the island for more than 30 years and leads guided walks through the magnificent peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana. She recommends a visit in late January or early February, when the island's four million almond trees are in blossom. If there's a nip in the air, pop into a café for a reviving lumumba (hot chocolate with brandy) – or just move to another part of the island. Simply by taking a short drive south from the mountains to the sea you can find yourself swapping cardigans for short sleeves.

With its tree-lined promenades, abundant art museums, swirling Modernista architecture and cosy bars – plus a six-mile seafront cycle path for fighting the Yuletide flab – Palma is made for a stress-free city break. Nigel Tisdall for The Telegraph.

• In the buzzing Santa Catalina district, once the fishing quarter, now a little hub of trendy bistros and bars, a ten-minute walk from the centre on Carrer Fabrica. Style: Intimate, informal, chic. Daily Mail

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have enjoyed a one-week stay in Palma and in Can Bartomeu, May 2012.

This three-bedroom, two-bathroom appartment had everything we could wish for, including balconys, a fully-equiped & modern kitchen, supernicely furnished high-ceiling rooms with decorative stone floors, tv, dvd, etc.

The adress was just five or ten minutes walk from the harbour of Palma, shopping districts, and the old parts of the city, where the cathedral is situated, was not far away. Grocery shops, banks, fitness centers and restaurants were just minutes away, too. After some search it was not hard to find an empty parking space for our rental car, which we used for seeing the island, with some of its beaches, monasteries, mountains, and towns.

Our late-night arrival did not hold us from recieval of the key, except maybe waking Iris and Michael up :) When the wireless internet connection didn't work, you quickly fixed it for us, and the upon leaving everything also went very smoothly.

We were very satisfied, and I recommend this six-bed appartment to anyone considering renting in Palma de Mallorca.

Stylish apartment in less touristy location

  • 4 of 5

Lovely apartment in Santa Catalina

Easy to reach , 10 mins walk from airport bus stop at Passiego Mallora

10-15 mins from edge of main Palma shopping etc, probably 35-40 mins walk to main train/bus station

5 mins to good local bars and restaurants, good choice of excellent food

Less touristy area, perhaps a bit run down in places but probably better value for money , would recommend if you dont mind a bit of a walk to things which we dont - walked to the harbour and cathedral easily.

Great little market close by and lovely bakery and grocery 2 mins from apartment

Apartment itself was as shown in the pictures, slightly quirky layout - balconies were not ones you could sit on but they did allow air in but dont expect views as it is a residential area. Stylishly decorated, lovely comfy beds and nice white linens and towels. Plenty of kitchen equipment and good appliances.

Probably needed a bit of end of season refresh e.g. doors sticking/stuck, would benefit from a deep clean but I am sure owners will see to that as they were very helpful and responsive. A late arrival was no trouble and all went smoothly.

Would recommend if you like a less central location.

Beautiful apartment in great neighbourhood

  • 5 of 5

We are three sisters who regularly visit Mallorca, often without partners and family in tow! We are just back from a 6 day trip in this beautiful apartment. The apartment is exactly as described and photographed and would very comfortably accommodate 6 adults - we were just spoiling ourselves with separate bedrooms. There is lots of space, generously sized bedrooms, two really large bathrooms, high ceilings and plenty of light. The beds are proper beds and the soft furnishings and linens of excellent quality. The apartment is exactly how you would dream your own holiday apartment might be like. The decor is well considered and stylish but also very comfortable; everything is clean and well maintained but also lived-in. For the size, quality and location, the price is very reasonable.

We love Santa Catalina and this is our first time to stay in the neighborhood we often visited to eat in the past. Though there are lots of cool bars and restaurants in the area, Santa Catalina is really like a village with lots of people doing their daily shopping and small businesses and workshops around; it has not become too gentrified even with the cool vibe. Downtown Palma is a 7 minute walk from the apartment.

The booking process was very simple and the apartment owners were fantastic to deal with. Communication was 100% satisfactory. They kindly accommodated our late arrival without any fuss and we really appreciated their accommodating us with a late departure.

We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this apartment and do hope we will have the opportunity to return.

Thank you for hosting us.

Excellent apartment, highly recommended to explore Palma and the island

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 6 day stay in this apartment in April 2016 (3 adults and 2 kids). The apartment is very spacious, bright and centrally located (about 15 mins on foot to the center of Palma, several good restaurants/cafes even closer, and a bus stop around the corner if you don't fancy walking). Everything was clean and in great condition (comfortable beds, nice bed linens and towels, two big walk-in showers, well equipped kitchen, etc.). We have stayed in several holiday rentals in various places over the years; this one definitely stands out for its spaciousness and quality furnishings, great location, and good value for money.

The pictures and description on the website are accurate. The owner's nephew was waiting to meet us when we arrived from the airport. Communications with the owner were swift and courteous, and we appreciated being allowed to add an additional family member to the booking after having made the reservation.

Mallorca/Palma surpassed our expectations, with lots on offer for kids and adults. All in all a fantastic week and we look forward to going back. We would definitely be happy to stay in your apartment again. Thank you for having us!

A great introduction to Palma

  • 5 of 5

It was so nice to arrive at this apartment when we got to Palma. After the long plane flight from Denver it was absolutely magical to have the taxi drop us off in the warm Mallorca evening and to hear our friends greet us from the open windows above.

The apartment is exactly as advertised. Big, clean and bright. We were three couples and had lots of room. We made good use of the ample kitchen. The apartment is on a quiet street but there is lots of bustling activity nearby. It feels very urban. We knew that we wanted something like this rather than a seaside high-rise and we were not disappointed.

The neighborhood of Santa Catalina is centrally located in Palma and is like a village of its own. It is situated on a hill with some spectacular views of the Palma bay. It has a popular market called 'Mercat de Santa Catalina' which still retains the flavor of traditional markets where you can buy typical products of the Majorcan countryside. Historically it was a fishing district because his situation was very close to the sea, this led to still retain the typical dwellings of 1 or 2 floors with balconies and facade features louvered shutters, some have a small garden that still remind us how the neighborhood was not so long ago, Santa Catalina retains the quaintness of the neighborhood of low houses and quiet streets. The neighborhood is rich in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth -cut modernist buildings of which still remain the newly renovate theatre 'Mar i Terra'. The neighborhood has all the services necessary: medical care, schools, post office, banks ... and catering establishments ranging from small, quiet restaurant or a typical neighborhood bar pub decorated with the latest artistic trends.
