About the property

One double bedroom with shower-room and kitchen, lounge with dining area

This is a newly built, contemporary one bedroom apartment, situated in a quiet cul-de-sac in Edinburgh’s New Town just 10 minutes walk from the city centre. Completely stocked with brand new very high quality furnishings and equipment in November 2011. Please visit our website for the latest special offers and online booking.

Current offer:

Free night - Get 1 free night for every 7 nights booked.

We bought this apartment because of its location and also its large amount of natural light and the high spec finish throughout. Oak flooring, under-floor heating in the shower-room, built in speakers for the iPod docking station, free Wi-Fi, secure entry system and private atrium area to sit in the sunshine, or the little private balcony off the lounge. We are on the first floor, atrium level and there is a lift. All doors are wide enough for wheelchair entry. The apartment would be suitable for those who have slightly impaired mobility.

The kitchen area is fully fitted with an oven and hob, large fridge and freezer, washer dryer, dishwasher, microwave, and we have stocked it with Raymond Blanc china, Viner's cutlery.

There is a Margiota supermarket (open 7.00am to 10.00pm daily) and an ATM just across the atrium and through the other apartment block. The New Town Deli on the corner serves breakfast from 7.00am, great lunches to take away or eat in. The award winning, 4 star, fish and chip shop “Alba Dora” is just around the corner and the Cuckoo bakery serves the best cup cakes ever.

The taxi rank is also across the atrium, through the next apartment block as are the bus stops if you want to go further afield, or don't fancy walking.

Parking charges of £1.60 per hour apply from 8 am until 5.30 pm Monday to Friday only.

Between 5.30 pm and 8.30 am on weekdays and all day on Saturday and Sunday there are no restrictions in the on street parking bays or single yellow lines.

If you don't intend on using your car during your stay please contact us and we can advise further options.

About Reta and John MacLennan

Together with husband John, we have a B&B which has won Five Star Gold Award from the Scottish Tourist Board and Five Stars from the AA with a special award for our breakfasts. We expanded our high standards into also running our two apartments in the city.

Prior to that I had a career as a Trainer and Manager of Quality Advisors for the Scottish Tourist Board, with the responsibility of driving up standards in facilities and services across the whole tourism product.

John is a retired CE of a very well established Civil and Structural Engineering Company in Edinburgh and now is the creative chef in our B&B.

John's hobbies are bee-keeping and curling, mine are singing in a choir and writing, and we both enjoy hillwalking and gardening.

We have a wide circle of friends and just love when they pop in or join us for a meal. We holiday mostly in Europe and the UK and have had a couple of trips to Florida, Canada and South Africa, staying at the best places of course because we never stop learning.

Why Reta and John MacLennan chose Stockbridge

We chose this property primarily for its location. At the foot of Dundas Street it is nicely positioned to cater for a wide range of guests needs. It is close enough to the heart of the city with its shops, bars and restaurants to be reached on foot within 10 minutes. Also within a few minutes walk guests could be enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the Botanic Gardens or enjoying a walk along the Water of Leith. Walking here you would swear you were in the countryside and not the heart of a bustling city. Situated in a cul-du-sac it provides a quiet haven for guests to relax at night. Many guests comment on how quiet the apartment is at night one guest even complained as she could not sleep because she was used to noise at night in her own apartment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Comments about this property:

Very modern, clean, well maintained apartment. Quiet surroundings so a good place to relax after a day in the city.

Bit of a walk uphill to the city centre, but there's a direct bus and you can get a taxi for approx. 6 pounds.

Tips for other travellers:

There's a Tesco nearby. The little grocery shop in the street is really overpriced so don't go there too often.

Quiet, comfortable flat in excellent location

  • 4 of 5

This is a small flat but there is everything you need for a stay in Edinburgh for a single person or couple. The flat was spotless, quiet, and the location within minutes of the bustling community of Stockbridge and around 15 minutes walk to Princes Street and central Edinburgh.

Lovely, clean and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

We were really pleased to find that the apartment was spotlessly clean and beautifully furnished. The bed was very comfortable. It was in a quiet location, but within easy reach of shops and restaurants. Stephen met us on arrival and was really helpful. We only had one very minor complaint and that was that although there was a set of wine glasses there was only one glass tumbler...could have done with two more so that we had one each and one for the bathroom, but that's just being picky! Lovely stay. Would book here again and would certainly recommend to friends and family.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely comments. We clean and maintaining the apartment ourselves and try to maintain the high standard we like. Very sorry about there not being enough drinking glasses, there should have been four beside the wine glasses, so we will get that fixed immediately. Accidents happen, and we should have noticed there were not enough. We would love to have you recommend to friends and family, and if you should wish to return, we will give you a discount. Many thanks for taking the time to respond to this site.

Perfect holiday rental

  • 5 of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the apartment and I will be booking again next year. The apartment is very quiet as it's tucked away from the main road. It's got everything you could need and my friend and I couldn't believe how everything looked brand new. It has been very carefully looked after. The bedroom has an enormous bed with proper bedding and a wardrobe with a decent number of coat hangers, while the sofa bed was also apparently very comfortable and the lounge came with a second wardrobe for people staying in there. The kitchen is very well equipped with a full oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster. The bathroom is stunning with a fantastic shower. Again it all looked like it was brand new. There are really lovely touches in the bathroom, for example little bars of soap and shower gels, all from a decent brand.

The location is great as it's about a ten minute walk into town, it is uphill but we got rapidly used to it, or there are two buses the 27 and 23 that got straight up into town. Along the road are several coffee shops, there is a great cupcake shop just a few doors down or further up there is the Archipelago bakery who did a wonderful afternoon tea. Just round the corner is Earthy Cafe and store who serve delicious lunches and have a great whole food shop. I would recommend going here to stock up on food but there are plenty of supermarkets on the same road as the flat.

The Botanic Gardens are also just round the corner, so close that we were able to pop in several times. The centre of Edinburgh is very close, you can even walk to Harvey Nichols from the apartment which is next to the Portrait Gallery which we loved and has a fantastic cafe. As Londoners we were thrilled at the number of artisan coffee shops in the area.

Delightful apartment in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderfully comfortable couple of days in this apartment. Around a mile to the city centre and just a short stroll into the shops / bars of Stockbridge.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. You are correct Stockbridge is just a few minutes' walk from the apartment with many bars, shops and restaurants. Closer still however is the beautiful and tranquil Water of Leith walkway. Access to the walk is just next to the Stockbridge and can be followed upstream through the Dean Village and on for 8 miles to Balerno on the Western outskirts of the city or downstream for 3 miles to the port of Leith. Princes Street and the city centre is just over half a mile from the apartment up Dundas Street. It is a uphill walk which guests have reports taking anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes depending on ability. Dundas Street is services by 2 buses, the 23 and 27 each running at 10 minute intervals through the day with a journey time of 2 minutes to the city centre.

10/10 for everything

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect flat for us - not exactly on holiday, rather visiting family and new born baby in nearby Comely Bank, so the ideal situation: near bus routes, shops, eateries. We were impressed by how clean and comfortable the flat was; well equipped with the essentials; and very quiet for a city centre flat. Strongly recommended for two people. We shall be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to provide your review. As you have mentioned the apartment is just a short walk from Stockbridge and Comely Bank as well as the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Water of Leith walkway. Many visitors to Edinburgh just come of the city centre attractions and miss out on the many attractions that the outlying areas have. Being in a cal-du-sac the apartment sees very little traffic so is indeed very quiet for a city centre location. We hope to see you again soon.

Edinburgh long weekend

  • 5 of 5

Immaculate, comfortable, well appointed & conveniently located apartment close to the recently noted 'best area to live in Edinburgh - Stockbridge'. Lots of lovely restaurants, bakeries & breakfast/brunch places nearby (quite a few of which are highly rated on Tripadvisor) & easily in walking distance of main attractions in the city centre. Bus stop & taxi rank outside one of the two entrances. Enjoyed a fabulous weekend in our home city & would definitely use this accommodation again if did not need a car.

As well as being classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995, the New Town is also home to an eclectic array of “hidden gems” with characterful restaurants and cafes, relaxed, welcoming bars and treasure-trove of privately owned little shops, art galleries and antique shops where visitors and locals alike can while away the hours.

If you'd like to stay in the centre of our beautiful city, yet have a quiet sleep, and easy walking to all amenities, this is it. Your bedroom will look out onto an atrium planted with trees and shrubs where you can sit and read a book in the sunshine if you wish. There is a small balcony in the apartment which also allows you to enjoy the fresh air while staying in an apartment.

Situated in a quiet cul-de-sac, just behind Dundas Street which takes you directly to Princes Street, Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street Gardens area of the city and the bustle of the larger shops like Jenners, Harvey Nicols, and the larger restaurant and pub chains.

Five minutes walk:

The Water of Leith – which winds through the city has a pleasant leafy walk. This can take you to the Botanical Gardens, the Galleries of Modern Art, Stockbridge, the Dean Village and onwards to Port of Leith with its waterside restaurants, cafes and bars.

Botanical Gardens - Edinburgh boasts a magnificent public garden, with free access, which is colourful in all seasons. Excellent restaurant and café facilities.

Ten Minutes Walk:

George Street - with the smartest shopping. St. Andrew’s Square - Harvey Nicols store. Princes Street and the Gardens - wonderful skyline view of the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle and “The Mound” the access to the Old Town. The newly refurbished Portrait Gallery is not to be missed.

You can cross the atrium into Dundas Street where there are numerous buses and a taxi rank. This route takes you to Margiota's, a small and extremely well stocked grocer/deli/newsagent open from 7.00am till around 10.00pm. In the same building is an ATM, and several carry out or sit in tea rooms, a wonderful cup-cake cafe called 'The Cuckoo Bakery'. On the corner is the New Town Deli which serves breakfast from 7.00am and their filled rolls are so stacked with filling, the bread is just a means of holding it together. All freshly made and filled to your order. Soups which are home-made and the lunch time queue speaks volumes.
