Charming 16th Century traditional Devon stone cottage in village nr. Brixham

Updated: 15-Oct-2016
Stylish open plan living to the ground floor with bedrooms and bathroom upstairs

Barnacle Cottage is located on the edge of the village of Galmpton, nestlling in the heart of the Dart Valley (designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). A few miles from Brixham harbour the village centres around a marina by the Galmpton Creek, a general store Post Office shop and butcher where 'locally sourced' produce comes as standard. The local Manor Inn is half a mile's stroll. The location is perfectly placed to explore all that South Devon has to offer but allows relaxation in a quiet and rural village life. It lies only a mile from the coast with sandy beaches and little coves to discover. The cottage caters comfortably for up to 4 with a double and a smaller bedroom. The open plan ground floor incorporates a comfortable lounging area with 2 sofas, dining table and a well equipped kitchen. With underfloor heating the natural stone floor to the ground floor open plan area becomes a cosy hangout in the cooler months. There is a front stable door and to the side off road parking. With no houses in sight and country views from every room the cottage boasts a very traditional atmosphere with original beams, open stone walls, turning wooden staircase etc. To the rear stone steps lead up to a breathtaking woodland garden spanning three levels with stunning views and plenty of shade with areas to BBQ, sunbathe or dine alfresco. Superfast broadband/ wireless internet, satellite TV, books and DVDs will help entertain.

The immediate area offers a wealth of activities including stunning coastal walks, beautiful beaches and river cruises. Try a passenger ferry ride over the Dart to Dittisham for a drink at The Ferry Boat Inn.

The Greenway House & Gardens on the banks of the River Dart run by The National Trust is easily accessed from the village. Once Agatha Christie's summer home, the house has been lovingly restored to its former glory . It offers a glorious day out with enchanting views, a cafe and a shop to browse. See the National Trust website for more information and to pre-book car parking etc.

Brixham and Dartmouth: Nearby Brixham offers much in the way of a quaint and working fishing town with an abundance of nautical activities such as boat trips, sailing and fishing. Choose from many good restaurants where locally caught fish is always on the menu.

The historic town of Dartmouth can be reached via passenger or car ferry and offers great award winning restaurants, markets, music festivals in May and a Regatta in August.

The medieval historic town of Totnes has an abundance of independent shops, markets, tea rooms and riverside restaurants. From here the wonderful South Hams beaches are easily accessible as is Dartmoor National Park.

Steam railway trips and Paington Zoo are among the wealth of childrens' activities.

About the Owner

Been lucky in my life to become well travelled since childhood which gave me permanent itchy feet, but now fairly settled here in Devon for the past nine years with one son, two dogs and a cat.

I feel as if I am on permanent vacation here in glorious South Devon and never tire of the fabulous beaches and scenery, coastal paths and walks in the surrounding Dart Valley and along the coast

I am truly blessed to be living in such a glorious place. More importantly it is the celebration of food and produce that I am really passionate about. Yes, whilst living in London you can have a delivery of organic vegetables but here it is just right here on your door step, Sorry veggies, but I drive past the herd of cows daily that I know I am going to find in my own butchers in a matter of weeks and I drive through the countryside where passionate organic farmers battle with the changing climate to bring us the real thing to our plates. Some even have tried the rat race themselves and come home to where it matters.

Beautiful little cottage

  • 5 of 5

Barnacle Cottage is a lovely little cottage in stunning surroundings. It is small, but extremely well laid out and very comfortable. Phyllis was very welcoming, and kindly returned various items that had been left. I would definitely return to Barnacle Cottage. Anywhere that provides a cream tea on arrival gets my thumbs up!

Pretty cottage. Very comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

Barnacle Cottage is a very quaint, well maintained, well positioned property. Ideal and central to all the resorts of Torquay, Brixham and Paignton. Close to the road where, at certain times, can get busy, but on the whole a very quiet location. The Cottage is fitted out extremely tastefully and with good quality fixtures and fittings. Friendly owner who will make sure you are very comfortable and happy with the Cottage and with your holiday.

Not dog friendly

  • 1 of 5

Upon arrival the property is situated on a very fast country lane with just one door to the downstairs. No back door to the garden which is shared with the owners dogs (one of which she admitted is territorial!) The property hadn't been cleaned due to a mix up and no promised home made cream tea. The stairs were very hazardous and the shower could only be used by bending down in the bath. We left after one night as we felt the cottage dangerous for our two small dogs. We are currently hoping for some kind of recompense from the owner as the cottage was definitely not what we were expecting.

Owner's Response: This a much regretted situation that occurred. I was away on a rare holiday leaving my faithful cleaning lady with full instructions for the changeover that day and my house sitter looking after my dogs and garden. I heard from my house sitter that my guests had arrived to find no welcome tray and the cottage had not been cleaned. I immediately set out to do what I could to reverse this situation and my cleaning lady arrived with fresh linen, a full cream tea and wine as an apology. By 7 pm my guests, who had booked for a week, were given the cottage in expected condition. For that delay I apologised profusely to my visitors who had been warned that I would be absent for the first few days, and I had given them my contact details to ring me if there was any problem. I suspect it was not initially clear that the place hadn't been cleaned so there was a delay until I was made aware of the full picture. In fact, I suspect the delay led to the guests being unable to forgive the honest mistake and no amount of apology was going to change their feelings unfortunately, so despite my offering them a gesture of a gift enough for a good meal out to say sorry, they apparently were too angry and the next day they decided to leave. Throughout my 12 year record of successfully letting out Barnacle Cottage to hundreds of holidaymakers, the majority with 1, 2 or 3 dogs, this is the first time I have had a complaint or situation such as this. I am happy to note that my HomeAway page is accurate in the detail that it is located on a village country road with a 30 m speed limit (and a couple of times a day it will be fairly busy as there are two popular schools in the village). The garden is at the rear and I warn that there is height restriction in the bath/shower due to a sloping eave. The front door has a stable front to help keep dogs and children from running onto the road, which is clearly visible in the photos. I regret that I was not here to welcome these guests, as I am sure this would not have escalated to the point they felt they could not stay for their holiday. It is very unfortunate they didn't call me at the first sign of something not being right and I could have taken steps to solve the issues much quicker.

Lovely second visit. We'll be returning soon!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Barnacle Cottage and it was everything we remembered it to be. Pretty, well equipped, extremely clean, full of character and the most amazingly comfortable bed. The extras made it even more special, cream tea waiting on arrival, a stair gate to help us persuade the dog not to join us in bed, great selection of DVDs, fab garden, and Phyllis' friendly welcome.

We did the walk and boat trip to the Ferry Boat Inn which was lovely and a day trip to Dartmouth on the ferry and steam train. Treat yourself to a first class ticket for £3, the views from the carriage are worth it. Loads of information in the cottage about places to go, eat, drink and play, most within easy reach.

Super few days in which we recharged our batteries and looking forward to the next visit.

Owner's Response: It was a real pleasure to welcome you back to Barnacle for your special celebration, albeit it only for a short break this time. Let's hope you can stay for longer next time so as to rest in between outings! Thank you for your visit and best wishes, Phyllis

Ein wunderschönes Stück England

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: You are lovely people. I have yet to see anyone take more advantage of the garden, skies at night and the surrounding walks and beauty. It was a real pleasure to have you here for two weeks and to see how much you loved the whole area. It is always rewarding when visitors wish to return not least because it proves there is always something else to discover whilst enjoying the familiar. We hope you will give us the pleasure of your company here in Devon again soon. Thank you and my warmest regards, Phyllis

From the Owner

The minute I saw the property and location of the cottages for the first time, I was in love. Coming down for a weekend from busy, stressed out London to house hunt, I saw the two gorgeous cottages and never looked back. Went back to London and immediately put in an offer and a few months later was here. I only saw the one property! Mad? Yes, but I have no regrets.

Nearest Airport : Exeter at 25 Miles Nearest Barpub : Manor Inn at 0.5 Miles Nearest Ferry : Plymouth at 25 Miles Nearest Golf : Churston Golf Course at 2 Miles Nearest Train : Totnes at 6 Miles Nearest Motorway : M5 at 12 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Manor Inn at 1 Miles Nearest Beach : Broadsands at 1 Miles Car: recommended

The picturesque village of Galmpton is 3 m from historiic Brixham and 1.7m to Greenway, once Summer home to Agatha Christie and now run by the National Trust, set on the banks of the River Dart with breathtaking views it offers a lovely outing with extensive grounds and restaurant.. From Greenway a few mins walk to the river Dart where a passenger ferry crosses to the heavenly village of Dittisham with its quirky riverside Ferry Boat Inn. The ferry runs all year and for the return journey a large bell summons the ferry - great fun for the children as is the crabbing off the small pier. 6 miles to the ancient town of Totnes with its many interesting shops, tearooms and riverside restaurants. From Totnes a trip to the grounds of nearby 10th C. Dartington Hall and the Sharpham vineyard is a must. Ferry boat trips, steam railways and Paington Zoo are all closeby. Coastal paths and the historic town of Dartmouth via car ferry 5m. From Brixham Berry Head cliff top walks, sea views & restaurant

National Park Dartmoor is within easy access and it is a real joy to get to know and very popular with all who visit South Devon.

Churston Golf Course is just over a mile away and looks out towards a beautiful scene of sea and bays.

From the Owner

I think visitors enjoy all the benefits I saw in this lovely, serene area directly surrounding the property. The peacefulness, the night sky full of stars, just the feeling that you are alone and without interference from others. The 'silence' is sensational, just the bird song. I love it!
