2 Traditional stone villas in historic Methoni, 500 m. from the beach - Villa Aleiki

Updated: 10-Aug-2016
Self-catering villas - each with 2 lovely bedrooms and a spacious lounge

These lovingly-restored villas created in a 150 year old village house sit in secluded gardens with orange, lemon and olive trees, private patios and pergola-covered eating areas. The perfect Summer holiday rental, here you can enjoy all the romance of ' Real Greece' with up-to-date family friendly self-catering facilities. The rear bedrooms overlook the gardens and church, (beautifully-lit at night) whilst the view from the front bedrooms of village rooftops, the Ionian Sea and the island of Sapienza is equally romantic. The villas have bathrooms upstairs and second toilets downstairs; Aleiki has a bath, Phoebe a shower. Aleiki also has a bathroom with shower in the garden and Phoebe has a private outdoor shower. This makes life with sandy kids much more convenient. The comfortable living rooms with dvd, sofabeds, wooden floors, beamed ceilings and thick stone walls, perfect for escaping the midday heat, are easy to use as 3rd bedrooms if needed. The kitchens have beautiful granite surfaces, and are fully equipped. LOTS OF REVIEWS AND MORE PHOTOS AT OUR WEBSITE - ( website link is just before the reviews section below )

Getting There: Charter flights from several UK airports fly to Kalamata May-October. From 2013 Easyjet fly direct from Gatwick to Kalamata and Ryanair fly from Milan to Kalamata. Easyjet to Athens has cheap seats if you book early. The journey is spectacular through the Taigetos Mountains - which divide the territories of the ancient kings Agamemnon (Mycenae), Menelaos (Sparta) and Nestor (Pylos). The new motorway, lined with Oleander and Cypress trees makes for an easy and pretty drive of about 2 and a half hrs to the foot of the mountains. If you decide to hire a car there are good deals with independent Greek companies at Athens airport. As you cross the Corinth Canal to the Peleponnese, a stop to admire this feat of c.19th engineering is a must. Agamemnon's palace at Ancient Myceae is well worth the short detour. .Don't hesitate to email us for further details.

We very much enjoyed Aleiki villa and Methoni

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enormously enjoyed our four weeks in Aleiki. We are both retired; our son and daughter, in their mid-twenties, joined us for a few days, and were as enthusiastic about the villa and about Methoni as we were.

The villa and garden had plenty of room for us, was well equipped and in good order. Nigel and Fiona were very helpful.

Between us we have had many holidays in Greece, mainly in islands, with a few on the mainland (I was in Kalamata and the Mani for a week rather a long time ago). Methoni was for us a real find. We arrived after the hottest weather (which was a plus for us), also after the tourist peak. Methoni is a delightful place – not at all over-touristified (and we would guess much the same even in July and August).

The villa is well placed for the beach (sandy), and for shops and tavernas/kafenions (of which we ate and drank in ten or a dozen – a great variety which we much enjoyed). Methoni castle is quite extraordinary.

We hired a car after ten days or so, but you don’t need one to get around Methoni.

We would certainly recommend the villa and Methoni to friends and family.

Lovely authentic Greek villa

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in this lovely authentic Greek villa in a peaceful back street in beautiful Methoni. Fiona and Nigel made sure we were happy and were very helpful with local information. On their recommendation we found the fabulous waterfall at Shinnalaka, as well as Golden Bay and the stunning horseshoe bay of Voldokillia. Nigel and Fiona organised a hire car for us which was very reasonable and easy pickup and drop off. They left us some of their delicious olive oil too. The villa is comfortable and beautifully decorated with an efficient shower and 2 loos, always useful. The local church bells are a bit of a surprise but you do get used to them. Will look forward to returning sometime soon.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for staying with us for a whole month ! We're very pleased that you enjoyed it and are thinking of returning. Methoni is a real Greek village and even though the population is only in the hundreds, cafes, tavernas and shops are open all year round. It is relaxed enough that you can make friends with the locals while you are here. Methoni is an excellent base for a long stay as the car hire costs can be kept to a minimum. Our local car hire company can usually deliver to the Villa so that no precious beach time is lost. And by the way, the church bells do not ring at night - but they do make the most of the Sunday service !

Typical Greek villa, filled with calm and comfort.

  • 5 of 5

The house is fantastic, it has everything you need for living in a house. The interior has a unique style and the garden is really something special, perfect for calm ad peace. Since the house is next to the city main street you have all the shops at a 2 minute walk, and if wanted you can completely forget using the car.

Temperature as well as the view is perfect and you'll immediately notice the bells playing every hour.

The house owners are absolutely 2 wonderful people, kind, available and very pleasing to chat with. We also really enjoyed staying with the new arrival: a small and friendly cat.

Surely a place we'll never forget and a vacation of unique beauty.

Great house at Methoni

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed in the Villa Aleiki for one week and it was just great. The house is charming and very practical (there is two bathrooms, a micro-wave, a toaster, and much more than two plates and three glasses which is wonderful for a renting in Greece!), the garden is lovely and the owners very nice and ready to help. It's very close to the (small and charming) main street and the area is beautiful, especially the sandy beach of Voidokilia.

Nice place for Christmas week.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely and comfortable place in the center of Methoni. Quiet and friendly, few tourists and reasonable very good restaurants, bakeries and grocery stores. A place of long walks and ancient history, friendly and one we want to come back to. House was clean and, although the owners were gone, they left a nice Christmas tree and under it, a gift for our daughter.

Owner's Response: Out of season or in and especially at Christmas, New Year and Easter it is particularly pleasant to be here in Methoni. Family members return home from Athens or abroad and the pretty church at the end of our road becomes a focal point for celebration. You don't have to be Greek Orthodox to join a candlelit procession here - all are welcome. That's how Methoni is, and why all our guests, whatever their nationality have felt like locals themselves within a day or two. A couple of meals in the local taverna and you are 'in' - gossiping about olives, olives and … olives ( Now is the olive season as you may have gathered )! Out of the heat of Summer is the best time to immerse yourself in the history, flora and fauna of this area - all at the same time! The sites of Ancient Bassae, Olympia, Messini and Nestor's Palace burst into life after the first September rain, and are dotted with wild cyclamen, arisaemas, crocus and Iris. Lizards, snakes and tortoises can be seen basking on the ancient stones. If you don't feel like driving there's Methoni castle, just a short and lovely walk away - the biggest and best preserved Medieval castle on the Mediterranean with over a mile of wild and barely explored walls, towers and tunnels. You are guaranteed to get back to the house with some great shots and probably a bunch of Spring flowers you considered rare before coming here. Methoni contrasts with tourist oriented areas which although very busy in summer, virtually shut down out of season. Of course the weather isn't as predictable, or as hot as summer, but this year Christmas Eve, Christmas day and Boxing Day were a sunny 18C in the afternoons and we were enjoying sunshine until leaving for New Year in the UK. Thank you John, Summer and Aria for deciding to stay with us. We hope you can return one day…

Wonderful villa... and perfect for children!

  • 5 of 5

This was the second time we'd stayed at one of Nigel and Fiona's properties and with a 3 year old in tow this time, Villa Aleiki was absolutely perfect. Its garden is completely enclosed so it feels very safe, and there were lots of distractions in the house (DVDs, books, toys) when the beach, the sun and sandcastles all got too much!

Methoni is as pretty and friendly as before, and you can buy all the essentials in the town. We spent every day the beautiful beach, using the hotel's loungers (for the price of a coffee!) or sitting reading in the wonderful garden at the Villa.

Nigel and Fiona were so helpful - before, during and after our holiday. We have recommended this villa and location to our friends, and we all very much look forward to spending another holiday at Villa Aleiki.

Owner's Response: We try to improve each year so our returning guests find something new. We've been able to extend the upper garden terraces and we've added an outside bathroom in Villa Aleiki to make life easier for sandy families and outside living. The grapevine is finally big enough to provide shade without it's bamboo roof and there are sun-loungers under the olive and citrus trees. We're pleased to see Methoni improving as well, without losing its uniquely traditional village feel. As you mentioned the beach has now entered the age of sunbeds and there are different places to eat alongside the traditional tavernas. This includes the new child-friendly garden cafe that you recommended to us ! In the end, nothing beats watching the sunset over Methoni castle, the most awesome castle on the Mediterranean. Thanks to you all for deciding to holiday with us for a second time, with a special mention to Oscar on his first visit.
