Gorgeous traditional country house, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, nr Dordogne

Updated: 25-Oct-2016
Self-catering, heated private pool, 9 bedrooms, grounds

La Sauzade is a beautiful country house, built in the 18th century, within walking distance of the historic village Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. The house is intended to be my home rather than just a holiday let and every detail has been chosen with that approach in mind.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable. Nearly all of the rooms look over the front lawn and swimming pool.

The ground floor consists of a large kitchen with substantial (2 m diameter) table, sitting room or family room, entrance hall, dining room, library. Behind the dining room and library is a down stairs bedroom with dressing room, stone fireplace, and its own bathroom. (Bedrooms are described below).

The house is furnished with antique furniture, as well as a wide screen Sony TV, separate TV, two play stations, DVD player, impressive DVD collection, table tennis, etc.

I am now taking bookings for weeks in 2017. If you are interested in booking during the summer holidays (or half term) in 2017 I strongly recommend that you book now.

Magical Holiday

  • 5 of 5

While the photos of the house are stunning, they do not do justice to the house in real life which is just gorgeous. Grand but comfortable and with so much space. We were five families with children from 1 to 7 and all had the most wonderful time. The house has everything you could need and all the bedrooms are large and airy with the most comfortable beds. The grounds are huge and the kids were off for hours exploring and picking fruit from the trees. The pool is a godsend and always warm. The area itself is beautiful and we spent almost every day the river beach with wonderful swimming and a lovely little cafe. We have decided to come back every two years and make it a tradition as the children grow up. Cant thank you enough for letting us stay in your home. Best holiday!

Not gorgeous, overall a very shabby house, outbuildings, pool and gardens. Ripped sofa and chair in the hall. Mouse and lizard in the kitchen. Two of the single beds were uncomfortable and in my opinion the house is not suitable for 15 persons. The mosquitos were terrible.

Beautiful house in lovely setting

  • 4 of 5

My family and I had a lovely stay in this gorgeous old house near Aubeterre-sur-dronne. The setting was delightful and the house had all we could need. It was very clean and well cared for. The pool was a godsend, especially with so many children. We had great weather whilst there, but should it have rained, there was always PlayStation or DVDs galore. Some of the rooms are definitely better than one or two others but it certainly didn't spoil our week away.

wonderful relaxing holiday in fabulously autumnal

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time and explored widely in this fascinating part of France and it was great to have such a comfortable and well equipped base from which to operate from. Should you have taken teenagers with you, less keen than you to study the finer points of renaissance architecture then they can be dumped in front of 'Call of Duty'!

Gorgeous house and a great location.

  • 5 of 5

I have now stayed at this house 3 years running with friends and you couldn't ask for a nicer place to stay. The owner is great and will help when you book the house, the lady that cleans and runs the house is extremely helpful. There is loads to see and do around and about, my favourite is going to St Emilion and trying all the wines at the vineyards. The house is lovely, with furniture to suit. The pool is even warm out of season (April/May) so whats not to like.

From the Owner

Please see the reviews written by previous guests. The house has a lovely feel - it swallows people up and makes a great venue for a party of 15 adults and children. The pool is a total suntrap.

La Sauzade is within walking distance of Aubeterre, one of Les plus beaux villages de France (this is, apparently, an official recognition rather than my own assessment).

The village has everything you might need for a relaxing French holiday including a range of restaurants and bars, post office, bakers, weekly market, bank, hairdresser, etc, as well as various craft shops celling local ceramics and jewellery.

Aubeterre is mostly built of stone and reflects the popular perception of an idyllic French village; there are 2 medieval churches, including one built from a single piece of stone which is the largest monolithic church in Europe.

During the summer there is a river beach in the village, with canoes, bicycles for hire and horse riding.

The house is also within easy driving distance of numerous famous towns and sights such as Bergerac, Surat, Cognac, and countless pretty villages.

  • There are 6 bathrooms and in addition a couple of separate stalls. The main bathrooms (i.e. bathroom 1, 2, 4 and the ground floor bathroom) were all refurbished in 2010. We used a number of suppliers. The hand painted tiles are from Marlborough Tiles (bathroom 4 and ground floor bathroom) and (bathroom 1) Douglas Watson. The stone (bathrooms 2 and 4) is from Stonells. Towels are provided (these are from Peter Jones): each adult should get a bath sheet and a hand towel, and also a towel for the pool. Each child gets the same but a bath towel rather than a bath sheet.
