Charming Tuscan farmhouse with large pool in unspoilt rural setting

Updated: 22-Oct-2016
5 large bedrooms,4 bathrooms ,2 large living-room,1 large dining-room

This charming Tuscan Farmhouse is set in a lovely, unspoilt region near the Etruscan hill town of Cortona, amongst olive groves and sunflower fields. Casa Il Campo has 2 acres of unfenced land including its own private vineyard, two terraces and plenty of shaded seating areas and a 12m x 6m swimming pool with salt water and refurbished in 2013 . This large farmhouse has been restored to a very high standard using traditional materials to maintain authenticity and atmosphere, though with modern kitchen equipment and bathroom facilities. There are five spacious bedrooms and four bathrooms. The two large living rooms (one on each floor) each have their own fireplace. The kitchen opens onto a romantic jasmine-covered pergola ideal for al fresco dining. The house has central heating making it suitable for winter rentals. This is a perfect base to explore Tuscany and Umbria's greatest treasures or simply settle down to the pace of rural life. Each bedroom has been given the name of an artist who has had a strong connection with Cortona, from Luca Signorelli, Fra Angelico, Vasari and Severini to Pietro da Cortona. Every room enjoys unspoilt and serene views on the tuscan countryside as shown in the pictures on this website . The house is ideal for families with children of all ages also because the pool is fenced .

A Family Home: The home flows from a large live-in kitchen. From here you step out onto the jasmine-covered pergola and the herb and rose garden. Guests are welcome to help themselves to the seasonal abundance which usually includes sage, basil, thyme, rosemary and parsley and to the fruit from the orchard in the lower garden, beyond the lavender hedge (apples, pears, apricots, figs and hazelnuts). The kitchen is fully equipped for those who love cooking. The hob has 4 gas and 2 electric rings as well as a large oven. The kitchen comes with a dishwasher, toaster, microwave and large fridge/freezer. From the kitchen you proceed to the formal dining room with a long table seating 12. Walk through the arch and you are in the sitting room with its large fire place. The second sitting room and four of the five bedrooms are on the first floor which you reach via an internal staircase equipped with child gates at the top and bottom.

Upstairs: The four bedrooms upstairs radiate from a large family sitting room with two sofas and armchairs. This sitting room opens onto a small balcony. In winter the fire place comes into its own.

Winter Rentals: The house has full central heating and two large fire places. It is therefore suitable for the colder but no less beautiful winter months.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As Ive said in your guest book, your house will be forever engraved in our memory. You really have a beautiful property and you made it so homely and comfortable. There is something magical about it. Something nostalgic, an understatement and a forlorn-ness (I mean it positively) that is so appealing. Ive never seen it before I saw your picture but it seemed like I knew it all along and it was a natural thing to go take a closer look. Im not going to say all this in my review otherwise people might think Im slightly lunatic ;) Anyway, personally and as a family, it was a place where my son and my daughter's families bonded. Even the children got along. I had expected a lot of hair tearing but nothing of the sort happened.

Lovely spacious farmhouse, perfect for two families. Very clean and pool serviced daily. Very close to beautiful Cortona, Montepulchiano and surrounding places of interest. Directions on how to find the farmhouse were excellent, as was the list of recommended restaurant.

We would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to our friends.

Under the Tuscan Sun Dream

  • 5 of 5

We are four Australian women who dreamt of a Tuscan adventure.

This villa was truly exceptional and made our dream of finding pure relaxation, serenity and peace a reality

All of the facilities, including the pool that was kept open beyond the normal season, met and exceeded our expectations. The grounds were breath taking, immaculately kept and picture perfect as the weather was warm and sunny for the majority of our 9 days and 8 nights.

The villa personnel from Gabriella, who met us in Carmucia and escorted us to the villa on our first day, to Giarda who gave us cooking lessons with a magnificent meal resulting, to Franca who cleaned the villa during our stay, and made us feel like we were coming "home".

We could not fault any component of our stay and would highly recommend this villa to family and friends.

Thank you Sylvie for a magnificent experience and fulfilment of our dream.

It is highly recommended to hire a car to ensure you get to see all local attractions and communities, and allow you the opportunity to take day trips either by car or train (we went to Florence for a day's shopping) to further enrich your experience. Perfection!

Life changing experience at Casa Al Campo

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing time during our three week stay at Casa Al Campo! The farmhouse and the countryside is breath taking. If we could we would come every year. The people we met both at Casa Al Campo and surrounding area were very welcoming, most especially Franca. She always had a smile and was very warm.

The memories of our time their will warm us through our long cold Canadian winter.

Beautiful, spacious, well maintained villa

  • 5 of 5

We, a group of Canadian seniors (all youthful sixties!), truly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful villa! The relaxing atmosphere of this home was very much what we needed after 16 busy, hectic days on a "Grande Tour of Europe". This spacious villa was very well maintained, as were the lovely gardens. There was plenty of room for all 7 of us and the villa supplied everything we needed - with the exception of the "American coffee pot" - HA! We hunted hard to find one, and although it is a very basic machine, it met our needs. Not sure how we missed the need to rent a car - but thankfully we found a couple without a prior reservation. We would have loved to enjoy the pool more but in May it was still too cold for us other than to put our feet in and sit on the edge. The weather was plenty warm to sit and read or visit around the pool. We used some of the herb garden to cook (rosemary, parsley and thyme) and enjoyed a couple of the limes from the fruit trees. Gabriella, Franka, and the cleaning ladies were also helpful and we appreciated having someone there occasionally. Yes, we did have rainy weather the last few days, but that did not slow us down from touring and enjoying the beautiful countryside - it was absolutely breathtaking! We sat on the outside deck and visited while the thunder and lightening and rain entertained us. The narrow and winding roads around the countryside gave us lots of thrills and amusement as we toured around. The history of the villa, towns and country is amazing. I would recommend this villa to anyone! Thank you Silvie!

I chose Casa il Campo based on the photos and reviews. I had never rented a property before, especially not one off a website. I was impressed by what I saw, but it did not prepare me for how truly beautiful this property is, nor for the extent of hospitality offered. My husband and I shared this home with our friends, another couple from NYC. The stone house is lovely, spacious, well-maintained, and well- equipped with every convenience except television. We did not mind this at all, as we were able to set up viewings of the World Cup on our computer, or headed into Cortona to watch with a crowd. There are so many rooms, nicks and crannies, that you could be together or find privacy within the house. We did not spend a lot of time in the house however, as the grounds were beyond belief. We spent much of our lunchtime, sitting outside on the porch, under natural covering, telling each other how lucky we were. Flowers and herbs in the near ground, a pool and olive/grape/fruit orchards in the middle ground, and mountains in the background! Unfortunately, none of the orchards were yet ripe, but it was pleasant imagining what it would be like when they were!

When we arrived, the home's caretaker had left for us: bread, cheese, sausage, cold-cuts, pasta, cookies, and a full basket of fruit, along with a bottle of wine and another of house-pressed olive oil. We were all set for our first breakfast and beyond. She and the owner were available to us for any issues which arose, the only one being my question about keeping windows open and bugs out. The next thing I knew, two Italian ladies showed up with fabric meshing, poles and a sewing machine, and on the spot, with animated conversation and hand gesturing between them, made us window screenings!

Due to our travel schedule we could only be in Tuscany 5 nights and 4 days. Despite that we got in walks; bicycle rides; swimming; shopping; touring of Florence, Siena, the Lake Trasimeno area, and our favorite, Cortona (twice). We went to the wine tasting/dinner held on Thursday nights there and it was a highlight. Florence was 1.5 hours away, Cortona only ten minutes. If you have not read Frances Mayer's Under the Tuscan Sun, which highlights the Cortona area, bring it along for your trip as I did. It was great to read it as I was experiencing much of what she did.

We look forward to returning to this home again in the future, with our whole family in tow!

Our stay commenced with prosecco and snacks served by the lovely pool after our late afternoon swim after arrival, which set the standard for the rest of our visit. The accommodation is of even better quality than we had expected; all was very spacious, comfortable and every necessity provided for. The bathrooms were excellent and modern and so too the bedrooms and the three living areas. We loved the traditional open-beamed ceilings too. As there were six of us, two ladies shared one room. but were happy to do so. For most meals we dined outdoors, under the loggia off the kitchen, except for the last night, when we used the dining room for a celebratory banquet provisioned and cooked by the local lady available to house guests. She chose for us traditional Tuscan fare with intense and deep flavours, using the local products and even gave us the recipe for the cantucci biscotti to go with the vin Santo at the end of the dinner. Her price was more than reasonable and she was friendly and generous in spirit. The vine-covered loggia was a lovely place to sit, close to the kitchen for convenience, yet next to the garden and the lovely plantings and within sight of the swimming pool and olive grove. We enjoyed fruit from the fig tree and herbs from the garden beds, nuts from the trees and flowers for the table too.

The villa's location also suited us perfectly Our excursions included to Perugia by train, Anghiari (the excellent linen factory and shop of Busatti linens), Sansepolcro, Monterchi (part of the Piero della Francesco "trail"), a vineyard in Montepulciano and a local very fine restaurant in lovely and spacious gardens. We could also have easily gone to Florence and Siena, but kept them for later visits, as we were enjoying the country ambience so much. The early morning walkers amongst us seemed to take longer and longer each day, until I discovered the reason by joining them and finding that the walk terminated at the local all-purposes shop where coffee and a pastry was enjoyed!

Our stay at "Casa al Campo" was a high point of our European travels in 2013 and sharing it brought our friendships of 25+ years even closer together; idyllic villa in idyllic setting, perfect location for sightseeing and cultural touring and wonderful food being available were the keynotes of our stay. It was also enhanced by the ease of dealing with our "padrona" and the team in place to care for guests. Truly a magnificent experience we would recommend to all.

From the Owner

We always dreamed to find a house there and fell immediately in love with Casa Al Campo because it entails all we love about Tuscany. Besides the charm and character of the well restored farm we really enjoyed its location : man made landscape combined with unspoilt nature ,medieval and renaissance art of Tuscany and Umbria all around, traces of history everywhere. It starts from the estrucans defense walls of Cortona to the battle field of Hannibal against the romans (in 217BC) and culminates with the well preserved town of Cortona with its proud and welcoming inhabitants.
