Tranquil cottage with private pool in rural setting near Chateau de Bonaguil

Updated: 13-Oct-2016
Well equipped farmhouse kitchen, spacious lounge, sleeps 9, three bathrooms.

Les Fosses is a stone cottage which has been beautifully renovated while still retaining many original features. The farmhouse kitchen seats 8 and is well equipped with quality chinaware and cooking equipment, cooker, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. A utility room houses a washing machine and further refrigerator. There is a separate living room featuring a magnificent fireplace, with sofas, tv and CD player, books, games and DVD's. The master bedroom with balcony and ensuite shower room is up a private staircase. Bedroom 2 is spacious, on the ground floor with doors to terrace and garden. It is attached to a shower room. Staircase from sitting room leads to a mezzanine with two single beds, bathroom and further large bedroom with three single beds. The exterior is perfect for summer dining. A covered terrace leads from kitchen and sitting room and the area by the pool under the oak tree is ideal for warm evenings. The private pool is 11 x 5m 5.5m with steps to one side.

Les Fosse is ideally situated in quiet, rural countryside, offering a relaxing environment while also giving guests an opportunity to visit many local sites and medieval villages as well as enjoying the local activities, such as kayaking, walking, tennis and horseriding. The beautiful Lot region is stunning, with its limestone cliffs and rolling valleys as well as many local vineyards and wonderful restaurants. Les Fosse is just a short walk away to the Chateau de Bonaguil, worthy of a visit and a guided tour offers an insight as to why this 'folly' was built! Relax in one of the local bars and restaurants afterwards. Cahors is the premier town of the Lot region, and just a 40 minute drive away. The stunning Pont de Valentre, the cathedral, market square, cobbled streets, museums and view points make for a very enjoyable day. Monpazier is a popular bastide town less than half an hours drive away, full of atmosphere where visitors can enjoy local shops and excellent restaurants. Puy L'Eveque, Praysac and Villeneuve-sur-Lot are all interesting and beautiful towns to vist. A little further afield are the marvellous caves of Padirac and Peche Merle. Rocamadour and St. Cirq Lapopie are also west of Cahors.

About the Owner

We fell in love with Les Fosse during our first family holiday in France and bought it there and then. We were living in Asia and it became our summer home for many years to come. Our three sons have enjoyed virtually every summer since and as the generations move forward, we are looking to our grand children visiting!

A quiet delightful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This attractive gite, besides being well equipped for all you would need on a

holiday, offers quiet and seclusion. It feels as if it’s in the middle of nowhere,

but it’s only a mile from two good café/restaurants. It has an excellent and

well-maintained pool. On warm days it is pleasure to sit and eat outside.

Everything is kept in immaculate condition and help is at hand if you need it.

Exquisite and relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

The 8 of us had a very happy and pleasant stay in that large, comfortable and very equipped house. The "sun orientation" of the pool was perfect allowing sunny and shadowy places to relax according to everybody's taste. The surroundings were beautiful with a lot of places to visit. And we have been able to see many rabbits and deers around the place. The lack of Wi Fi had been a very good thing avoidind the teenagers to spend their days on the social networks!!!

Les Fosses - A quiet and secluded getaway

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 5 looking to have 2 weeks of sun and relaxation. We achieved this with no problem as Les Fosses. The surrounding area offers something for everyone with a plethora of Vineyards and Chateau's for those days out and River Kayaking and other sports available locally. The local village/hamlet of Bonaguil is walkable across country with Les Bons Enfants being the preferred watering hole. The Pool is a good size and very clean and the house is well equipped. We BBQ'd nearly every day with the local supermarkets being a short drive into the closest town Fumel. The owners are very easy to deal with and accommodating when making the booking. I would certainly recommend to anyone looking for something a bit more rustic and off the beaten track.

Tranqil, relaxing house

  • 5 of 5

Lovely comfortable house with a fabulous pool. Very well equipped with everything you could wish for and all very clean and well maintained. Red squirrels stealing the walnuts and millions of stars on a clear evening make it enchanting.

Owner and caretaker both very friendly and helpful.

Charming little restaurant within walking distance with nice food. Lots to see in the area.

Thoroughly recommended.

Peace, pool and beautiful chateau

  • 4 of 5

Lovely, clean, well-equipped house with excellent pool. Beautiful quiet location but within a delightful 15 minute walk of fairytale chateau with restaurants, cafes and a couple of interesting shops. Good base for seeing the area and even better for just lazing round the pool. And with an owner who actually cares about you having a good holiday.

Idyllic Rural Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful mellow week at Les Fosses in June this year. Les Fosses lived up to our expectations and well beyond.

Property descriptions were accurate. Rooms are generously proportioned, clean & well furnished. There are plenty of seating & dining areas inside and out – you can all comfortably have lunch at the poolside table in a shady corner, and then eat supper bathed in the late evening sun on the terrace in front of the kitchen. Another favourite spot for relaxing was under the weeping willow tree in the centre of the garden. An ideal spot to read a book in the hot afternoon sun.

The kitchen is well equipped and the gorgeous crockery deserves a special word of mention.

A decent swimming pool is an essential factor in our holiday enjoyment and the pool at Les Fosses is both clean and an adequate size for exercise, as well as fun. Back in mid June the water temperature was refreshing but entirely bearable and we swam several times a day.

The property is secluded but not isolated. You do have a few neighbours around but you cannot see them and there is absolutely no traffic noise. It is very peaceful.

The nearest place by foot, and a nice walk it is too, ( 15 mins ) is Bonaguil, a charming village with an impressive castle. You can go there for an aperitif, lunch or dinner, for gift shopping of local arts and crafts or just to visit the castle. During the holiday season the local community organises cultural evenings so it is worth checking the entertainment scheduled both in Bonaguil and other nearby towns.

Other outings include walks/ cycle rides around the local vineyards, visits to old Bastide towns or to the River Lot. There is no shortage of activities to keep you busy if you have had enough of mellow times beside the pool.

As for daily convenience, there is a large supermarket and other shops about 20 minutes by car from the property. Here you can get everything you will need for self catering.

Les Fosses is an ideal rural retreat in a beautiful part of France.

Set in the beautiful French countryside, Les Fosses benefits from a tranquil setting offering privacy and calm. It is within a few minutes walk of the magnificent Chateau de Bonaguil with its small hamlet of restaurants and local craft shops and close to Fumel. Situated on the stunning River Lot, Fumel offers a weekly market, a selection of local shops and restaurants as well as supermarkets to supply all your needs.

Known in the region for its famous Cahors 'black wine' the landscape features numerous vineyards, many of which offer tastings. The area is a culinary delight, famous for being the home of truffles and foie gras, as well as gourmet restaurants and local plat du jour menus offering delicious food which can still be found at very reasonable prices.

From the Owner

Les Fosse is in a rural, peaceful setting and offers comfortable and well equipped internal space, also two perfect outdoor dining areas; the covered terrace and under the oak tree in the shade during a hot summer's evening. Sitting on the wooden bench under the weeping willow tree is also a magical place to spend some time!
