The property consists of a group of vast and imposing original stone buildings surrounded by three hectares (7 acres) of park and private forest. A prized south of Sarlat location, just a few hundred meters from the Dordogne river, yet within five minutes by car (even in July and August) from the medieval charm of Sarlat, the capital of Perigord Noir, its excellent restaurants, shops, markets and festivals. Both quiet and peaceful, but close to everything and not isolated. Our three charming gîtes, Le Pommier, Le Rosier and Le Bois, are perfect for your self catering holiday rental while you explore the beautiful Dordogne valley. Very comfortable and full of character, each has a large private garden, barbecue and use of a chlorine free heated swimming pool. Official 4 star rating.
SARLAT: Sarlat is by far the most important tourist site in the region. Over a million visitors discover or re-discover this medieval jewel every year. It has one of the largest medieval urban areas in the world and the greatest number of historical monuments per square kilometer in Europe. Starting in 1964 the town has been restored and renovated revealing a veritable treasure trove of Medieval and Renaissance art to the public. The 1978 film version of “Les Miserables” was filmed extensively in Sarlat, but also in nearby Domme, with the stunning Beynac Castle standing in for the famous Toulon Jail. Sarlat’s wonderful architecture and medieval style buildings and stone roofs have made a backdrop for a score of other top motion pictures since, which has added to it’s fame and it’s fortune.
BEYNAC: The cliff-clinging Chateau de Beynac soars 150 meters straight up above the Dordogne river. Apart from the impressive location, Chateau de Beynac is also a fascinating castle to visit and explore. You can see many of the ancient rooms, dungeons, kitchens and living quarters. In 1189 Richard the Lionheart, the king of England, seized the castle by scaling the cliffs below and entering through the toilet holes that are suspended out over the cliff. They are still there today and can be visited. Beynac has served as a location for several films, including Jeanne d'Arc by Luc Besson, in 1999.
OTHER THINGS TO SEE : Our own personal website contains a comprehensive guide of all the must-see attractions in the Black Perigord including a map, beautiful photos and a brief description in five languages. You will also find a map of nearby stores and recommended bakeries (with opening hours and days closed), pharmacies, post office, bike rentals, a farm selling directly fresh foie gras products, etc. and a lot of other useful information.
I am originally from Houston and live in France with my family since 2001 and love it. I garden a lot, play piano, go on walks, teach English to local French kids, and travel in the off-season.
Karen McLeod-Kowalik purchased this cottage in 2007

Thanks Karen and Peter for a lovely week at le bois, and for the very warm welcome, had a great week here in the Dordogne with our children, swimming, sightseeing, (zip wiring through the trees in a forest) and eating out in the lovely garden at the back of our gite. We loved it so much here we have booked again for next year (our third year in a row!)
Best wishes to you both and see you again next summer!

This VRBO gem nearby the town of Sarlat provided us with a very central location from which to reach a variety of beautiful towns to visit, including Montfort and Vitrac which are within walking distance. Others, however, like Beynac and Marqueyssac are closer than 45 minutes drive and of course, Sarlat, (5-6 minutes drive away) is the nearest large shopping centre close to our home, Petit-Manoir. The town of Sarlat itself is a wonderful place to shop and in particular to explore the old town centre - a beautifully maintained French slice of history. The Petit-Manoir was also a centuries old country estate with spacious and park like grounds. Furthermore, our hosts and owners, Karen and Peter were a gracious, thoughtful and well organized couple who went out of their way to ensure that we were comfortable and that we enjoyed our stay. We would highly recommend Le Petit- Manoir to anyone! However, we would suggest that one should have a vehicle in order to take advantage of the many incredible sights and activities within the Dordogne region. Thanks Karen and Peter for your patience and delightful sense of humour.
A lovely Gite in a beautiful location. We had a wonderful relaxing holiday staying in le Bois, Le petit-manor. Great private garden and very clean and well maintained property and
swimming pool to have that afternoon dip in.
Karen and Peter most welcoming and helpful. They have great pride in their beautiful house garden and gites. I would happily recommend to anyone. Vitrac is a great location to explore the Dordorgne. Days close by and days further afield. Great walks direct from the Gite. Sad that the river was in full flood for the two weeks we were there and we could not do our planned canoe trips. This just meant more dog walking and exploring. Cannot wait to return.
Karen gave great customer service from day of booking all the way through our holiday, thanks Karen 😀👍
We really enjoyed our week at Le Petit Manoir. After spending two weeks in the heart of Sarlat, it was nice to spend some quiet time in the countryside. There are three apartments here that have been constructed out of an old stone barn. They are absolutely beautiful - bright and clean with all of the modem amenities you could ask for.
You can spend your days on your own private patio or lounging by the swimming pool. There are a number of small towns and villages close by to visit and many castles and chateaus to tour. Shopping is as close as Sarlat which is only a few minutes drive away.
The owners are on site if you have any questions or need some advice, but are unobtrusive and respect your privacy.
First of all the grounds of Le Petit-Manoir are beautifully maintained with lush greenery, flowers, a garden and fruit trees. Although, we were too busy touring the area to use it, it also has a big and very pretty swimming pool. The apartment was clean and the layout was awesome with a very nice kitchen, bbq grill and a nice place to sit outside. It felt very private. Peter and Karen know the area very well. They are gracious property owners and can answer any questions that you may have. They gave us great direction on interesting and fun things to do. I would definitely recommend and have recommended this property to friends and relatives. I can promise that you will not be disappointed if you stay at Le Petit -Manoir.
Le Petit Manoir is really beautiful, the accommodation is nice and charming, the view to the garden as well as the great pool are great for a relaxed holiday. The very advantage is the location because it's just outside Sarlat, next to the river Dordogne and not far to castles, caves or the famous Vezere valley for sightseeing the lots of activities like canoeing, swimming etc.
The hosts Karen and Peter are very helpful and have good ideas what to do and where to go. For us, their homepage is structured very well so that we could inform us before the holidays about the whole area.
We would definitely recommend the property to our family and friends and hope to come back one time.
My wife and I stayed at Le Bois one of the 3 gites. The gite was very clean and comfortable and thankfully had air con as we had a heat wave (41c on a few days). The pool was fantastic - great pool furniture and plenty of room.
Wifi and TV very good (most English speaking channes we have experienced to date).
Le petit Manoir is about 10 mins from Sarlat but very convenient to lots of the attractions in the Dordogne. he web site is also full of useful information on the attractions with a handy location map as well as recommended restaurants.
Karen was a very welcoming and cheerful host and keen to help if required.
Canoeing on the Dordogne - we used the local company in Vitrac and it was a really great experience. It is great value and a super way to see the countryside - 6 hours sounds a long time - but with a break for lunch, a swim etc it flies in.
Chateau de Milandes - great exhibition of birds of prey as well as a tour of the chateau and the Josephine Baker exhibition.
La Grotte de Saint Christophe - a fascinating exhibition of how life was lived on caves and building built into a rock face.
Finally I would recommend Le Petit Manoir - it is a well run establishment.
