Within the golden triangle of Montfort, Beynac and Sarlat, five kilometers south of Sarlat and near the 12th century village of Vitrac, we have an ideally located property of exceptional beauty. The property consists of a group of vast and imposing original stone buildings surrounded by three hectares (7 acres) of park and private forest. A prized south of Sarlat location, just a few hundred meters from the Dordogne river, yet within five minutes by car (even in July and August) from the medieval charm of Sarlat, the capital of Perigord Noir, its excellent restaurants, shops, markets and festivals. Both quiet and peaceful, but close to everything and not isolated. Our three charming gîtes, Le Pommier, Le Rosier and Le Bois, are perfect for your self catering holiday rental while you explore the beautiful Dordogne valley. Very comfortable and full of character, each has a large private garden, barbecue and use of a chlorine free heated swimming pool. Official 4 star rating.
SARLAT: Sarlat is by far the most important tourist site in the region. Over a million visitors discover or re-discover this medieval jewel every year. It has one of the largest medieval urban areas in the world and the greatest number of historical monuments per square kilometer in Europe. Starting in 1964 the town has been restored and renovated revealing a veritable treasure trove of Medieval and Renaissance art to the public. The 1978 film version of “Les Miserables” was filmed extensively in Sarlat, but also in nearby Domme, with the stunning Beynac Castle standing in for the famous Toulon Jail. Sarlat’s wonderful architecture and medieval style buildings and stone roofs have made a backdrop for a score of other top motion pictures since, which has added to it’s fame and it’s fortune.
BEYNAC: The cliff-clinging Chateau de Beynac soars 150 meters straight up above the Dordogne river. Apart from the impressive location, Chateau de Beynac is also a fascinating castle to visit and explore. You can see many of the ancient rooms, dungeons, kitchens and living quarters. In 1189 Richard the Lionheart, the king of England, seized the castle by scaling the cliffs below and entering through the toilet holes that are suspended out over the cliff. They are still there today and can be visited. Beynac has served as a location for several films, including Jeanne d'Arc by Luc Besson, in 1999.
OTHER THINGS TO SEE : Our own personal website contains a comprehensive guide of all the must-see attractions in the Black Perigord including a map, beautiful photos and a brief description in five languages. You will also find a map of nearby stores and recommended bakeries (with opening hours and days closed), pharmacies, post office, bike rentals, a farm selling directly fresh foie gras products, etc. and a lot of other useful information.
I am originally from Houston and live in France with my family since 2001 and love it. I garden a lot, play piano, go on walks, teach English to local French kids, and travel in the off-season.

Karen and Peter were very helpful with all aspects of our stay in Vitrac. There were 6 of us, 3 couples, and we found Les Chenes delightful, well appointed, and the grounds beautiful. The pool had just been closed when we arrived in early October, so we cannot comment on that. The location is perfect for canoeing the Dordogne, exploring Sarlat, all the caves, Domme, La Roque Gageac, Beynac, and many other locations. The website was very helpful for planning beforehand, and narrowing sites to visit in our time frame. Karen's suggestions for restaurants were spot on. Only slight negative-- a local farmer was burning what we think was crop waste a couple nights, making some nasty smoke on the calm nights, but the smoke did not enter the house. I assume this is seasonal to October.
High expectations - after having been spoiled twice in past years already (“Le Pommier” and “Les Rosier”). Not to mention our general familiarity with predominantly Asian five star + standard, honed at the Conrad in Hong Kong , the Shangri-la in Singapore and the Oriental in Bangkok.
Karen and Peter did it again: two care free weeks in their new gite. Spotlessly clean, immaculate style, homely. A feel good atmosphere right from entering "Les Chênes" plus comfort of contemporary standard, electric and electronic, wired as well as wireless. The pool perfectly temperated, delight pure.
Our party of five adults, three generations including an 8 months old baby, were privileged to enjoy the days which passed too fast. Hats off to the hosts who seem to think of everything, every detail which in summary add up to a true top star experience. We were lucky as well since the weather matched our jolly mood.
Thank you Karen, thank you Peter! We thank you for happy two weeks! Family circumstances permitting we will be back!
Wonderful property, brand new but looks like it's been there for centuries. Great pool and garden. Perfect location to enjoy a holiday in the Dordogne.
Les Chênes at Le Petit Manoir was a great home base for our family of 4 to explore the Sarlat area for a week. The photos are accurate and, actually, the house feels bigger than shown. Karen and Peter are warm and responsive hosts who do their utmost to ensure their guests enjoy their stay; for example, a kitchen tool that needed repair was replaced within 10 minutes of a quick text. One of the best features of Les Chênes was the combination of privacy (we had 2 large and quiet yards to ourselves) and proximity to help or advice as required... the owners are across the hedge, a one-minute stroll away. The wifi signal was great both indoors and poolside. Our kids loved the heated salt water, very easy on the eyes. The electric awning on the deck was perfect, for sun-worshippers, shade-hogs and anyone in between. The Vitrac location really is superb as you are within a 5-25 minute drive of any number of medieval villages, castles and gardens to explore, and just a 7-minute drive to the centre of Sarlat with all those restaurants (why cook when in France?) or even closer to a couple of great supermarkets even closer by for your favourite morning cereal. Karen's recommendations for food, kayak rentals and farm visits were bang-on. We have rented several vacation homes in the last few years in the south of France - Le Petit Manoir ranks with up there with the best, and certainly is good value for money, especially when compared to most anywhere in Provence ;-)
This was our third visit to Le Petit-Manoir & won't be our last.
Les Chênes is a delightful, well designed property, a real "home from home".All the rooms are a generous size & well proportioned, with lots of room for 6 people.
The ground floor has everything you might need. A kitchen so well designed that it's a delight to work in. Open plan kitchen, dining & lounge area, ideal for socialising. Downstairs cloakroom & laundry room. The bedrooms are well appointed & the master suite on the ground floor has a fabulous walk in shower.
Outside the property is just fantastic. The garden is a very good size. The front of the property has lots of room for children to run & enjoy, whilst the rear of the property is very private, with a beautifully planted garden to admire. There are numerous seating areas for eating or just relaxing.
The cherry on top of the cake has to be the HEATED swimming pool. Like everything else at this property, it is a generous size, beautifully laid out, lots of lougers & a fantastic automatic sun canopy.
Peter & Karen are fantastic hosts, discrete but more than happy to be of assistance should you need them.
Karen & Peter thought of everything - great pool, all new kitchen & laundry room, lots of plugs for electronics, great bathrooms, roomy upstairs, convenient location but quiet. Lots of nice touches!
