The Cottage is The Best of both Worlds:
Located on 1.25 Acres tucked in a neighborhood near shopping yet also convenient (1.6 miles) to the bustling Downtown activities and a great jump-off point for Sedona, Flagstaff, Jerome or the Grand Canyon!
You have the privacy and safety of parking in your own driveway off our Private Lane off the street.

Birds and Wildlife visit the Casita and the property regularly since we have migrations both north and south. You may see Hummingbirds, Goldfinches, Spotted Towhees, White-breasted Nuthatches, Juniper Bushtit, Ravens, Flickers, Western Tanagers, and lately a Kestrel, when the ravens don't chase it away! We had a Great Horned Owl in the Meadow for nearly 2 months one summer! We've added an owl box and a bat box to the property! Javelina come through about every other night. They have migrated up from South America and are in the peccary family. We or our Guests have also seen Coyotes, deer, raccoons, skunks, lizards and alien-looking bugs!

This 1948 house has been updated to open the floor plan. We raised the ceiling & installed additional lighting, flooring, and plumbing. Modern furnishings meet Mid-century styles meet Southwest Cowboy Country! Original artwork, antiques, vintage & quirky pieces blend beautifully with bamboo floors, tidy spaces, comfy furniture & luxurious bedding!
The 2 bedrooms have a Serta Firm & a Beauty Rest "Recharge" Luxury Firm mattress, each with comfortable pillowtops & your choice of Allergen-free, bamboo Temper-pedic or ergonomically-contoured pillows. Blankets, quilts & comforters are cotton & cozy! The master has a ceiling fan... or you can open the windows for some fresh air!

The kitchen is fully stocked with utensils, dishes, glasses, pots & pans. There are bamboo floors for easy cleanup & travertine countertops, along with a granite-topped bar. 2 pantries have lots of room, plus cleaning supplies & brochures about Prescott. A lazy Susan corner cabinet will hold your food or seasonings. We provide salt, pepper, coffee, teas, hot chocolate, sugar, cream, olive oil & coconut oil, plus a few other items.
We give you enough supplies to get you going but do not resupply when you run out.

The living room has a leather sofa (not a sleeper) & two chairs. Educational Magazines & Books about Prescott & Arizona are provided plus there are games, cards & puzzles for your fun & entertainment! Or step out on the deck for birdwatching or stargazing! We also have a 40" flat screen TV with cable, WIFI and High-speed internet.
The Bathroom has a shower & a bathtub with a rainshower head and fluffy towels. Several shelves & storage closets are there for your sundries.

Prescott sits at a high elevation of 5,354 ft., giving us a mild climate & four seasons. We are often called the Mile-high Town so be sure to drink lots of water to adjust to the higher elevation. Prescott is surrounded by forests & the area offers five local lakes for fishing, hiking, cycling & kayaking. Prescott National Forest has 400 miles of groomed trails, biking trails & many equestrian trails. The Mile-High Trail System maps nearly 48 miles of trails around the city. Birding is also popular since we get migrations both north & south. Over 360 bird species have been confirmed in the area.

Prescott is also rich in western history, both cowboys and Native Americans. Several museums host events: Sharlot Hall, Museum of Indigenous Peoples and Phippen. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is busy nearly every weekend with art and antique shows, concerts & wine tastings. Music, film screenings, theatre & various performing arts are offered at the Elks Opera House, the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center and the Prescott Center for the Arts. Whiskey Row & the surrounding area have saloons, gift shops, art galleries & restaurants documenting the lives of ancient pre-historic Indian tribes, townspeople, cowboys & characters such as Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and Big-Nosed Kate.

We are licensed, inspected and compliant with the City. We have fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors and a first aid kit.
Prescott has a Noise Ordinance from 10pm to 8am. We do not allow parties or events.
Pets are occasionally allowed with permission, a signed Pet Agreement and a Pet Fee.

Whether you're here for relaxation or to attend one of the many events we welcome you to the Prescott Hideaway. We're a new business & excited to hear about you, why you're visiting and how your visit goes! Please write on the tablet any suggestions of things we can do to make your visit even better! For public comments Please give us a review here on VRBO to help our business and ratings! Thank you! Enjoy your stay!

Please be respectful of neighbors & wildlife so we can continue to grow our business. And remember you are next to the forests! There are critters around & some can be dangerous, like black widows spiders, mountain lions & javelina. In case you didn't know, Javelina look like hairy pigs but are actually in the peccary family & roam in herds. They have 1.5" tusks, poor eyesight but keen noses. They're pretty casual & timid, rooting in the dirt for grubs, but if they're startled, aggravated or protecting their youngsters they can attack. Watch from a distance and make noise so they know you're there. Do not scare or charge them or leave food, pets or children unattended. And keep the gates closed so they don't eat the garden!

Have fun on your visit and we hope to see you at the Prescott Hideaway!

We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was very charming. There was a garden area in front of the cottage with a creek running through. The hosts met us to check in and gave us some recommendations for tourist activities and restaurants. The location was only a mile from the historic downtown.

The house we stayed in was spacious, but a the same time cozy. We really appreciated the many bird books and books on Arizona history. The kitchen was set up well for the cooking we did. We will always stay at this place when in town.

About the host

Hosted by Dave Rueb and Karen Hunt

Host profile image
We purchased the property in 2016 with the help of the previous owners who'd owned it for 40 years! Dave and I are both in Housing: Construction and Sales. With both of us self-employed in the housing industry we lost about everything (except each other!) in the crash. After business losses, bankruptcy, IRS audit, short sale and deaths in the family, we moved to Prescott, nearly on a whim. We rented from another couple we just met who believed in us and loaned us the down payment for this parcel of land. We started thinking about the possibilities of such a cute property and did a little work on the Log Cabin but tried to keep it mostly intact, even with its funky fixes by other owners and tenants. We renovated the Cottage down the lane in a big way (#883663), opening the floor plan and adding a garden.
The Log Cabin appears to have been owned (and possibly built) by a man who was a piano tuner and salesman. His wife worked as a bookkeeper for an attorney. They had one daughter who eventually taught dance in Los Angeles but returned to Prescott to care for her father in his last days and bury him in the local cemetery next to his wife (researched at Sharlot Hall Museum).
Thank you for choosing us. Let us know how we can make the property and your experience even better. We started this as our primary business after suffering many losses. We want a successful business and happy, satisfied guests! Blessings to you!
Karen and Dave

Why they chose this property

We really liked the location near the Fairgrounds and Downtown (but not too close) and the seasonal creek. With all the large elms, locusts and cottonwoods, we knew we wanted to preserve and improve upon this little park-like setting. The owners were thrilled with our vision and were finally able to part with it, knowing we would be good stewards to the land and the creek which adds to the water supply in Prescott

What makes this property unique

The Cottage was darling yet we knew we wanted to make some renovations to open the floor plan, allow more light and put hardwoods down throughout. Dave's been a contractor all his life so we went to work. The house is from the 40's (at least) so there was lots to do. Dave opened the kitchen to the dining room, the dining room to the living room and new sliders replaced a window, opening the whole house to the meadow. Dave added a deck and arbor and I landscaped for a garden of fruit trees, shrubs and flowers. We discovered the javelina loved it too and we installed a white picket fence to keep the little devils out! After Carpets were ripped out, ceilings lifted, lighting, plumbing, painting, and lots you can't imagine we started making it homey. We had fun furnishing the Cottage and meeting people from auctions, antique stores, yard sales, thrift stores and estate sales. It's so wonderful to see so many works of art, antiques and collectibles and remember the people and stories that go with them. How heart-warming and magical it is to repurpose someone else's beloved or handmade items!
We still haven't even spent the night here but would love too! We've enjoyed a cocktail and glass of wine on the deck once or twice and I've often thought I could move in! I love the openness, the quiet, the cleanliness and the birds and butterflies.
