About the property

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom accommodation, ideal for family or 2 couples sharing.

The Stables were converted into an apartment in 2009. It is mainly of stone construction, with some brick ornamentation. The bedrooms have vaulted ceilings and original beams. Each has a private bathroom. The fixtures and fittings are of high quality and are tastefully assembled. There are views of the river and Town Bridge from both rooms. Bedroom 1 has a surface area of 30 m², Bedroom 2 has 21.5 m².

On the ground floor there is a large sitting room/ kitchen, ( 27.6 m²). Two walls are of stone, one of which is tuffeau, the names of the horses which one time lived here remain on the wall. The ceiling has the original beams.There is a television which can be adjusted to receive British or French programmes. The kitchen has a fan assisted oven and induction hob.The building has double glazing throughout and is well insulated.

Outside there is a gated courtyard for parking and an enclosed garden/ terrace.

About Alan Evans

Brenda and I are both originally from London, but have moved around quite a bit. We came to France in 2003, having retired from our soft furnishing/decorating business. I have enjoyed participating in sport over the years, in particular rowing and climbing. Brenda is the creative one, and was highly regarded for her interior designs, and sound advice to customers over many years, first in her family business, and later when she struck out alone.

Why Alan Evans chose Saint-Aignan

We were intrigued by this property when we found it was for sale. It's location on the banks of Le Cher, and proximity to the most famous chateaux of the Loire, made it very interesting to us. The building was a challenge, and demanded much of our energy and resources to renovate, especially L'ancienne écurie ( stable ), which was a wreck but of which we are now very proud.

What makes this barn unique

We love this property because of it's position on the river front, and with the back drop of the castle, chateau, and church on the skyline behind us. Viewed from the river it is a site protected by 'Patrimoine de France', ( listed ). The stable block is an interesting building, mainly of stone construction, but with ornamental features in red brick. The oak beams supporting the roof are much in evidence in the bedrooms, and are of interesting design.

There is a courtyard which provides off road parking about 8 metres from the entrance.

There are several restaurants close by, 2 are within a minutes walk.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! My wife and I had actually 'looked' at the appartment on Google maps and were pleased to see that it was right across the street from the river Cher (the one that Chenonceau straddles further upstream.

On our arrival, Alan made us welcome, showed us the marvelously redone stables,(no lingering evidence except for the names of favourite horses on the walls in the main room), gave us the key, and answered our questions about the area. VERY helpful; he even lent me the use of his piano to practice on.

The town is delightful, off the beaten tourist track, but with it's own chateau (not open to the public) a towering presence. It's very well situated to visit various attractions, about equidistant from chateaux along the Loire, Cher, and Indre rivers, most within a 20-30 minute drive.

You can't go wrong if you decide to stay here.

Fantastic property!

Loved this amazing renovated property! Very spacious bedrooms, baths, and common areas, with thoughtful touches throughout. Beautiful views from the upstairs windows and one of the most comfy beds I've ever slept in. Noise from the street didn't bother us. Walking distance to restaurants and a supermarket, so car wasn't needed for local travel. Only problem was no WiFi, but we were given access to a vacant rental just steps away and were able to check emails daily. Truly didn't want to leave this wonderful accommodation and the town of St. Aignan!

Owner's Response: Thank you Jenise, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. The WiFi has long been a thorn in our side. We have spent a lot of money on this, we call an IT man, who , within minutes establishes connection, sadly 2 days later it has gone again, and the bill is never less than 100 euros. So, finally I have given up, I have deleted WiFi from the website. There are several points within the property complex where internet works, but I accept that is not the same as sitting in your own accomodation . Thanks again, it was a pleasure to welcome you to Saint-Aignan.

This was beyond all my expectations. Perfect location, great property, and warm and gracious owners

This was a perfect trip for us. We stayed for 23 days at The Stables and every day was an adventure. The Stable are wonderful with two spacious bedrooms, large bathrooms and kitchen accommodations that were great for us. The beautiful river Cher is just across the road road from The Stables which sit in the quaint town of Staint-Aignan. Numerous chateaus and markets are close by to visit. The town of Saint-Aignan, the chateaux, and the church is marvelous. The owners, Alan and Brenda are wonderful hosts and helpful with anything that you need. This was a trip beyond all my expectations. Thank you Alan and Brenda for having such a wonderful place and being the kind hosts that you are. We miss the church bells that ring every hour in Saint-Aignan. Again, our trip to France was perfect because of The Stables and owners Alan and Brenda. I forgot to mention the private garden with the red umbrella. What some beautiful evenings we had there.

Very spacious property, renovated sympathetically and to a high standard. Ideal for two couples.

Set in a pretty location overlooking the River Cher in the historic town of St Aignan. Alan has thought of everything to make this a very comfortable place to stay, including a selection of CDs and lots of tourist information and local maps.There was easy secure parking and covered secure storage for our bikes. This is a great place for exploring the numerous Chateaux. We opted to cycle, following many of the marked cycle routes.

Unlike other reviews we had no problems with the Wi-Fi which worked well .

This is a great find. It is rare to find a property offering so much space and two similarly sized, large bedrooms.

Very pleasant week in the Loire valley. Property was very nice although as is typical with such properties there is a steep staircase which could pose problems with the less mobile guests! Hosts were helpful and unobtrusive which is good. Internet a bit patchy when the satellite TV box is on but good when the box is switched off. All in all thoroughly enjoyable. The restaurant about 20 yards along the road was very good and very friendly

Saint Aignan sur Cher - Not as restful as we had expected

The accommodation itself was pleasant enough apart from a few problems (see below), but the town is one of the noisiest places we've ever stayed in!

We knew the property was on a road but, apart from one reviewer who mentioned morning traffic noise, no previous occupants had mentioned the fact that the traffic noise continues all through the day and night, or that the nearby church clock/bell chimes every half hour from 7am. We are used to hearing the 7am bell when staying in France, but have never come across such frequency before. We are from the London area so you would think noise wouldn't be a problem to us. However, Saint Aignan sur Cher is far noisier than where we live, and all four of us came home feeling exhausted. Not what we had in mind when we planned our trip to Loire.

After finding the property too noisy to sit outside at, we decided to go to a bar in one of the cobbled streets in the centre of town. Unfortunately, there was a constant stream of cars driving past on the cobbles and the noise was so loud you couldn't even hold a conversation! We initially thought this might have been a particularly busy time of day, but we soon discovered that whatever time of day we attempted to walk up the cobbled streets of the town, we couldn't avoid avoid the cars.

The accommodation has been renovated to a good standard, but one gripe we had was that the wifi didn't work. Alan attempted to rectify the situation a couple of times but, apart from about 1 hour during our stay when we were able to use it, there was no internet connection available for the rest of the time. Also, although the bedrooms looked lovely, the old style bed in the rear room creaked loudly every time anyone moved and was uncomfortable to sleep in.

On a plus side, we ate some very good food during our stay in St Aignan sur Cher. On 3 evenings out of our 4 night stay, we ate at L'Embarcadere which is a stone's throw away from the accommodation. The food was very good plus the staff were friendly and extremely hardworking. On our last evening in town, we ate at Le Crepiot where the food was also very tasty. Fortunately, we had booked a table inside, based on the recommendation of a Trip Advisor reviewer who referred to the noise created by passing traffic on the cobbles!

Owner's Response: Please read other reviews. The church bell gives one solitary 'bong' on the half hour, and counts the time on the hour, it is a source of pleasure to me and many other people. It is not that close to the accommodation, and not especially loud. The bed described as uncomfortable I will look into. Nobody has given this opinion before, in fact quite the reverse, the bed is part of a bedroom suite, and the mattress is one year old. I will make enquiries of other people and if need be change the bed. Quite a bit of traffic passes through Saint-Aignan, mainly on it's way to Zoo Beauval, but I live in an adjacent house, and do not hear traffic noise at night. The internet connection in the accommodation is not good despite my best (and expensive) efforts. There are several places in the property as a whole where connection can be found, and guests are free to enter our conservatory and other areas.

Perfect for our needs!

The gite was clean and comfortable for the five people who stayed there. We cooked two delicious dinners during our stay, and the owner was very helpful in pointing us to a very good grocery store in the town. The location across the river is quite scenic, and the town full of restaurants and shops is within easy walking distance. A very restful place to stay after our flight into CDG, and as we visited sites along the Loire before heading south to Toulouse.

The Stables, situated on the banks of the river Cher, and in the historic town of Saint-Aignan, is an ideal base for exploring the ' Valley of Kings'. Within 30 mins drive you can visit the chateaux of Chenonceau, Valençay, Loches,Chambord, Cheverny, Amboise, and many others. The beautiful city of Blois, with it's fine chateau, restaurants and bars and eclectic shops, is also within A little further afield (40 min) you will find Amboise, it's chateau,and large twice weekly market and to the west, the fascinating city of Tours.

If you do not wish to drive, Saint-Aignan offers plenty to see and do. The Collegiale (church) dates back to the 11th Century, and has fresco's in the crypt dating from that time, you are free to enter and see for yourself.

Wine-making has been going on in and around Saint-Aignan for centuries and many vignerons have caves open to the public for tasting and purchase of their products.

Saint-Aignan is home to the world renowned 'Zoo Park Beauval', It's white tigers, and giant pandas are especially interesting, a great family day out.
