Overview

About the property

Restored Authentic Traditional House with Views - 2 Double & 2 Single Bedrooms

Situated in the 'trendy' mediaeval hilltop village of Pyrgos - benefiting from direct sunset views - Spiti Stelios originally served as an old artisan house and winery dating back to the early 18th century. This traditional building with truly beautiful caldera and island views, has been restored and converted into a simple and friendly family holiday home. Teams of local artisans have used traditional crafts, techniques and materials to restore this comfortable Santorini 4 bedroom dwelling.

Approached via a footpath which has unique breathtaking views across the island and aegean beyond, the entrance to Spiti Stelios leads into a large authentic cobblestoned courtyard with outdoor dining area and barbecue. Spiti Stelios has a large 80 sq. mtr. sunbathing terrace with direct views of the island, ideal for relaxing with a glass of local wine and enjoying the spectacular sunsets which are [almost] guaranteed on the island. On a clear day it is possible to make out more than 10 different islands in the distance including Ios, Sikinos, Folegandros, Milos, Amorgos, Naxos, Irakleia, Christiana, etc.

Inside, the spacious living room features two traditional Santorini couches, scattered with plenty of cushions. At the rear is an arched alcove which we use as snug/TV area; this used to be the tread for the white grapes in years gone by. The well equipped kitchen helps make preparation of breakfast/meals easy, with lots of utensils, modern appliances including a dishwasher. Adjacent to the kitchen is one of the two single bedrooms with breathtaking views across the island. An arched passage, from the kitchen, leads to a central hallway which retains some of the original architecture of the old red grape tread that used to be there. This leads to the other 2 bedrooms and family bathroom with its 'loo with a view' (perhaps unique on the island!). The master bedroom is light and airy, with breathtaking caldera views and double doors opening onto a second enclosed courtyard. Adjacent to the master bedroom is the other single bedroom. In total there are one master bedroom and two single bedrooms on this level.

Spiti Stelios benefits from an authentic 'yposkafo' double bedroom downstairs with en-suite wet room; this is dug out of the rock. This benefits from having its own independent entrance from the street (through the second enclosed courtyard) as well as being accessed from the master bedroom and the double doors to the courtyard. This double en-suite 'yposkafo' is carved out of the rock in authentic Santorinian style and served as the workshop where cheese and other artisan products were made in years gone by. The rear courtyard also has an outdoor shower, which can be used rinse after returning from the beach!

The beautiful sugar-cube village of Pyrgos is one of the prettiest places on the island, built around the remains of the venetian castle, in a charming mixture of winding lanes and white-washed churches with distinctive blue domes. Pyrgos is centrally located with access to multiple beaches and places of interest.

Beaches

There are at least 2 beaches which are only 15 min drive from Pyrgos (1. Kamari and 2. Vlychada). In addition, there are Perissa and Perivolos beach within a 20 min drive from Pyrgos. While public transport is available from the village square it can get very busy in the summer months and is unreliable, therefore renting a car is strongly recommended.

On the other [East] side of the island there are several beaches, most notably Vourvoulos, Baxedes, Pori and Cape Columbo all worth exploring. Cape Columbo is somewhat secluded and a perfect location if you are looking for peace and quiet. It is reputed to 'sit' on a series of mini volcanic craters deep under the sea bed and the far end of this beach is a naturist/nudist beach.

Walks

You can walk along the cliffs from Fira to Oia, about 11 km. Start out in the morning when it's cool and be sure to take along plenty of water, a snack, sun cream, sunglasses and a hat!

There is a hiking trail between Perissa Beach and Kamari Beach that passes by the archaeological site of Ancient Thira at the summit of the mountain. The Perissa side is a dirt trail. The Kamari side is a paved road with steep switchbacks. Not counting the time you spend exploring Ancient Thira, the hike will take you about 2 hours.

There is also a trail which starts at Vothonas village, winds up through Pyrgos and continues on to Profitis Ilias (some 567 meters above sea level). From there, the trail continues to Ancient Thira and then on to Perissa. This trail provides spectacular views of the island, and will take 2 – 2.5 hours plus the time you spend at Ancient Thira.

In addition, there is a hiking trail between Pyrgos and Mesa Gonia that passes through Mesa Gonia village. The trail is a bit dusty but most of the walk is very nice. The Mesa Gonia end of the trail really gives a different view of the island, taking you back in time 50 years or more perhaps.

Restaurants

In the village, there are several local restaurants and tavernas, all within a short (7 min) walk from Spiti Stelios. We are also conveniently situated near two of the best restaurants the island has to offer: Selene restaurant and Metaxi Mas taverna, both a mere 15 min walk from the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The owners of this gorgeous house arranged for us to be met by Christina (who looks after the house) on our way from the airport. She made sure we were settled and showed us where everything was. Stellios and Caroline had arranged for tea, coffee, milk, bread, honey, water etc to be in the house which was invaluable as we arrived so late. The following morning Ester arrived to check that we were OK and gave us lots of useful information about the Pyrgos and the island. In addition to this, Caroline and Stellios had also given us invaluable insider knowledge of Santorini. The house is as gorgeous as the photos and we were blown away by Pyrgos. It had everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Initially worried we weren't staying in Fira or Oia we soon realised we much preferred this lovely village with it's beautiful houses, a great choice of very good restaurants, a good local shop, a fab bakery and a wonderful sunset to accompany our sundowners on the roof every night! I would highly recommend it to anyone. ”

Beautifully restored traditonal style cave house in a charming village with walkable shops/tavernas.

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at this property with my 2 sisters and brother for 1 week in late June '17. It was the 30th anniversary of our mother's death and we wanted some space and time to be together, relax, have fun, talk. Spiti Stelios was the perfect villa for us. Immediately we felt at home -there were all the modern facilities we needed mixed with lovely traditional features. The villa is situated in a gorgeous old village in the centre of Santorini so great for access to the rest of the island. It is on a hillside so there are amazing views from both the villa and the local tavernas and restaurants. We were looked after extremely well-all our questions answered promptly and requests met. We couldn't have had a more perfect venue for our holiday. Thank you.

Holiday heaven

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we booked we knew we had made the right choice. Carolyn could not have been more helpful with any of the questions regarding our stay. When we arrived everything lived up to our expectations. The villa is just as it is in the photos. A beautifully restored winery with amazing roof top views. The villa is finished to a high standard but remains a homely feel. By the time we ended our 2 week holiday we really felt like this was home. Everything from the comfortable beds, good linen (changed during our stay) the well equiped kitchen and the perfect setting. In our opinion Pyrgos was the best location on the island - still retaining the traditional peace of a village but with great bars and restaurants and of course views. We honestly could not find fault. A fantastic place to stay and make memories on this beautiful island. Our family would like to thank Carolyn for allowing us to share in their wonderful villa.

A home from home with views to die for!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week at spiti stelios at the end of August 2016 and had the most wonderful time.

Sat Nav will only work to get you to Pyrgos Village but we managed to find the house with no problems as the instructions (with pictures) were perfect!

Be aware that there is a 5 minute walk up a steep incline from where you leave the car to the house.

The house itself is absolutely gorgeous, it has been renovated to an excellent standard but still feels like a traditional Greek home. It is spacious and full of quirky features like the see through floor cover in part of the lounge which allows you to see into the original storage area for wine making! Fab!

It is just a short walk into Pyrgos village square where there are several lovely tavernas and restaurants to chose from and there are plenty more scattered around the hills of Pyrgos all within walking distance of the house.

My favourite part of this property is the private roof terrace where you can sunbathe or sit and enjoy the sun (or sit in the shaded area if you would prefer!) and enjoy the the most breathtaking views of the island!!! If you read the guide books they will all recommend a trip to Pyrgos for the best views of the island and you have all of this without leaving your house!

On our day of arrival Ester met us to show us around the house and also sat with us to answer any questions we had about the island, things to do and excursions, she was super helpful and I felt that this service was such a lovely touch and like having a local friend you could contact with any questions you have.

I can't recommend this place enough! We hope to return again in the future!

Thanks

Very nice indeed! Definately recommend

  • 5 of 5

A lovely property in the true traditional Santorini style with all the comforts you would expect. Pyrgos itself is a fabulous village, as it away from the "madding crowds" of Oia and Thira, which can get a bit much. Its a really pretty village, some lovely restaurants and fascinating to explore. Well postioned to easily access any part of the Island and with a view over the Caldera the infamous Santorini sunsets are a treat from the terrace of Spiti Stelios!

De magnifiques vacances

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful Holiday Home

  • 5 of 5

The villa is well equipped, spacious and well looked after. The views from the roof terrace are stunning.

It is a very short walk to the centre of the village including restaurants and shops. We spent the first day exploring the small streets where there was something new to find at each corner.

A car is required but the villa is very central to the island so other places are very easy to get to. The longest journey was around 25 mins to Oia.

Caroline was very helpful throughout booking and our visit. The process was very easy and simple.

Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful villa. Santorini was stunning and I can't wait to return. We will definately recommend the villa to others and hopefully will return ourselves soon.
