Spiti Stelios Traditional Restored House (sleeps 4-6)

Updated: 16-Oct-2016
Traditional Restored House, Sleeps up to 6 in 4 Bedrooms

Situated in the 'trendy' mediaeval hilltop village of Pyrgos. Spiti Stelios originally served as an old artisan house and winery dating back to the early 18th century. This traditional building with truly beautiful caldera and island views, has been restored and converted into a simple and friendly family holiday home. Teams of local artisans have used traditional crafts, techniques and materials to create this comfortable Santorini 4 bedroom dwelling.

Approached via a footpath which has unique breathtaking views across the island and the Aegean beyond, the entrance to the property leads into a large cobblestoned courtyard with outdoor dining area and barbecue. There is also a spacious (80 sq ms) roof terrace facing SW (i.e. the sunsets!), ideal for relaxing with a glass of local wine and enjoying the spectacular sunsets which are [almost] guaranteed on Santorini. On a clear day it is possible to make out more than 10 different islands in the distance including Ios, Sikinos, Folegandros, Milos, Amorgos, Naxos, Irakleia, Christiana, etc.

Inside, the living room features two traditional Santorini couches, scattered with cushions and an alcove which serves as a snug (this used to be a tread for the white grapes). The kitchen is well equipped with modern appliances. Adjacent to the kitchen is one of the single bedrooms. An arched passage leads to the other 2 bedrooms and bathroom with its 'loo with a view'. The master bedroom is light and airy, with caldera views and double doors opening onto a second enclosed courtyard. Adjacent to the master bedroom is the other single bedroom. In total there are one master bedroom and two single bedrooms on this level.

In addition there is a cool double bedroom downstairs with en-suite wet room. This benefits from having its own independent entrance from the second enclosed courtyard (which also has an outdoor shower). This double en-suite 'yposkafo' is carved out of the rock in typical Santorinian style and served as the workshop where cheese and other artisan products were made in years gone by.

The beautiful sugar-cube village of Pyrgos is one of the prettiest places on the island, built around the remains of the mediaeval castle, in a charming mixture of winding lanes and white-washed churches with distinctive blue domes. Pyrgos is centrally located with access to multiple beaches and places of interest.

There are at least 2 beaches which are only 15 min drive from Pyrgos (1. Kamari and 2. Vlychada). In addition, there are Perissa and Perivolos beach within a 20 min drive from Pyrgos. While public transport is available from the village square it can get very busy in the summer months and is unreliable, therefore renting a car is strongly recommended.

On the other [East] side of the island there are several beaches, most notably Vourvoulos, Baxedes, Pori and Cape Columbo all worth exploring. Cape Columbo is somewhat secluded and a perfect location if you are looking for peace and quiet. It is reputed to 'sit' on a series of mini volcanic craters deep under the sea bed and the far end of this beach is a naturist/nudist beach.

You can walk along the cliffs from Fira to Oia, about 11 km. Start out in the morning when it's cool and be sure to take along plenty of water, a snack, sun cream, sunglasses and a hat!

There is a hiking trail between Perissa Beach and Kamari Beach that passes by the archaeological site of Ancient Thira at the summit of the mountain. The Perissa side is a dirt trail. The Kamari side is a paved road with steep switchbacks. Not counting the time you spend exploring Ancient Thira, the hike will take you about 2 hours.

There is also a trail which starts at Vothonas village, winds up through Pyrgos and continues on to Profitis Ilias (some 567 meters above sea level). From there, the trail continues to Ancient Thira and then on to Perissa. This trail provides spectacular views of the island, and will take 2 – 2.5 hours plus the time you spend at Ancient Thira.

In addition, there is a hiking trail between Pyrgos and Mesa Gonia that passes through Mesa Gonia village. The trail is a bit dusty but most of the walk is very nice. The Mesa Gonia end of the trail really gives a different view of the island, taking you back in time 50 years or more perhaps.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The owners of this gorgeous house arranged for us to be met by Christina (who looks after the house) on our way from the airport. She made sure we were settled and showed us where everything was. Stellios and Caroline had arranged for tea, coffee, milk, bread, honey, water etc to be in the house which was invaluable as we arrived so late. The following morning Ester arrived to check that we were OK and gave us lots of useful information about the Pyrgos and the island. In addition to this, Caroline and Stellios had also given us invaluable insider knowledge of Santorini. The house is as gorgeous as the photos and we were blown away by Pyrgos. It had everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Initially worried we weren't staying in Fira or Oia we soon realised we much preferred this lovely village with it's beautiful houses, a great choice of very good restaurants, a good local shop, a fab bakery and a wonderful sunset to accompany our sundowners on the roof every night! I would highly recommend it to anyone. ”

A home from home with views to die for!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week at spiti stelios at the end of August 2016 and had the most wonderful time.

Sat Nav will only work to get you to Pyrgos Village but we managed to find the house with no problems as the instructions (with pictures) were perfect!

Be aware that there is a 5 minute walk up a steep incline from where you leave the car to the house.

The house itself is absolutely gorgeous, it has been renovated to an excellent standard but still feels like a traditional Greek home. It is spacious and full of quirky features like the see through floor cover in part of the lounge which allows you to see into the original storage area for wine making! Fab!

It is just a short walk into Pyrgos village square where there are several lovely tavernas and restaurants to chose from and there are plenty more scattered around the hills of Pyrgos all within walking distance of the house.

My favourite part of this property is the private roof terrace where you can sunbathe or sit and enjoy the sun (or sit in the shaded area if you would prefer!) and enjoy the the most breathtaking views of the island!!! If you read the guide books they will all recommend a trip to Pyrgos for the best views of the island and you have all of this without leaving your house!

On our day of arrival Ester met us to show us around the house and also sat with us to answer any questions we had about the island, things to do and excursions, she was super helpful and I felt that this service was such a lovely touch and like having a local friend you could contact with any questions you have.

I can't recommend this place enough! We hope to return again in the future!

Very nice indeed! Definately recommend

A lovely property in the true traditional Santorini style with all the comforts you would expect. Pyrgos itself is a fabulous village, as it away from the "madding crowds" of Oia and Thira, which can get a bit much. Its a really pretty village, some lovely restaurants and fascinating to explore. Well postioned to easily access any part of the Island and with a view over the Caldera the infamous Santorini sunsets are a treat from the terrace of Spiti Stelios!

De magnifiques vacances

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful Holiday Home

  • 5 of 5

The villa is well equipped, spacious and well looked after. The views from the roof terrace are stunning.

It is a very short walk to the centre of the village including restaurants and shops. We spent the first day exploring the small streets where there was something new to find at each corner.

A car is required but the villa is very central to the island so other places are very easy to get to. The longest journey was around 25 mins to Oia.

Caroline was very helpful throughout booking and our visit. The process was very easy and simple.

Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful villa. Santorini was stunning and I can't wait to return. We will definately recommend the villa to others and hopefully will return ourselves soon.

Home is where the heart is

  • 5 of 5

Four of us travelled to Greece in September this year and stayed at the lovely and original Spiti Stelios. Pyrgos is a quaint little village, perched majestically on one of the highest topographical hilltops on Santorini. A cascade of white houses dotted the landscape almost in a spiral. This fact should have alerted us to the fact that our jaunt from the parking space to the house would have been a bit of a challenge!! Especially with our heavy luggage, silly us...

Spiti Stelios was a gem of a place to stay. Caroline and Stelios have renovated and created a relaxing atmosphere in their villa. It is traditionally decorated in every detail. And it was evident that it was a labour of love..The courtyard off of the kitchen was our favourite place to eat our breakfasts and dinners. And the lounge area up on the top landing was a refuge to have a glass of wine and cool down in the evening. It is the perfect spot from which to absorb the sunset...a much quieter place to watch it as opposed to the busy and crowded Oia.

The loo with a view was indeed so, donkeys and pedestrians both sauntering past the window. The kitchen was very well equipped and the big frig was a bonus as we ate in a lot. There is a charcoal BBQ which we used often...(there is a fish monger a few minutes from the villa). The bedrooms were beautifully done up and we loved the little snug area. It was very hot during our stay, sometimes making sleep a little difficult, but we managed.

The streets that surround Pyrgos where winding and quaint, always something new to see and the view as you can imagine from that vantage point was amazing! There are some nice restaurants locally as well, and bakery's and grocery stores here and there, with larger ones in the next village, a stones throw away. Lest we forget all of the beaches we visited...Santorini is the perfect sized island to explore..

Regina was very helpful, as were Caroline and Stelios who answered all of our queries promptly and expertly. They were the perfect hosts, considerate and thoughtful...to the point of leaving us some delicious libation...I only wish I had tried the Vinssanto earlier... Thank you Caroline and Stelios for all of your help with the ferries, car company and various other things. You have a real gem of a place and we just loved it!! Kindest regards Anne Marie and Dennis from Canada....xo

Famille F.
