Tourist attractions

The apartment is near the historic towns of Pizzo & Tropea: The apartment is situated 10 minutes drive away from the historic town of Pizzo with its numerous shops, restaurants, cafes and ice cream parlours. Pizzo is home to the world famous Tartufo ice cream.

Tropea which boasts one of the best beaches in Italy is a much visited tourist attraction and is a 20 minute drive away from the apartment.

Other places of interest include Morats castle, Piedigrotta which is a cave full of carved statues, and the recently renovated spectacular monastery in Tropea on a cliff overlooking the sea.

Food and wine in this part of Italy is excellent and inexpensive and includes fresh fruit and vegetables grown locally. Cuisine in the region tends to be spicy and flavourful, featuring pasta, cheeses and some typically Greek ingredients such as honey and figs, and the area produces sweet white wine.

Do not miss the experience of stopping off to taste the amazing famous Pizzo truffle, hazelnut and chocolate ice-cream (Tartufo) dusted with cocoa.

Places of interest and location information: The Calabria region of Italy is the country's best kept secret. Rugged and remote, Calabria is the region forming the ‘toe of the boot’ of Italy, neighbouring Basilicata to the east and Sicily to the west. There is an astonishing authenticity to Calabrian holidays, as tourists have only very recently discovered this fantastic forgotten corner of Italy.

A visit to Pizzo offers noteworthy panoramic views overlooking the coast and Tyrrhenian Sea as well as medieval glimpses of rare beauty. One can enjoy pleasant walks through the historical centre, that is, where it is possible to visit the San Giorgio Collegiate, which preserves important 16th century statues.

The San Sebastiano Church is located nearby. To complete the visit to religious buildings in Pizzo, one can visit the Purgatorio (Purgatory) Church, the Grazie Church and Pizzo Castle. From here one can reach Pizzo Marina, which is a much visited seaside tourist attraction.

The old, picturesque village of Pizzo is a short 15 minute drive away with a variety of shops, restaurants and bars as well as some breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding countryside.

Tropea is only a 30 minute drive away and is worth visiting to explore the many restaurants, bars and wonderful beach voted one of the best in Italy.

Pizzo has two main tourist attractions: the Chiesetta di Piedigrotta, cave-chapel on the shore, and the renowned tartufo di Pizzo, a chocolate truffle ice cream. It also has a historic castle and a pleasant town centre where there is a tourist information office in Piazza della Repubblica, the main square.

The Chiesetta di Piedigrotta is just outside Pizzo; a fifteen-minute walk along the road leading out of town along the coast to the north-east. The church is down a flight of steps; tickets are for sale at a bar over the road. The church dates back to the seventeenth century and is a cave dug out of a soft rock in a bank facing right out to sea, and was originally created in gratitude by shipwrecked sailors who'd been saved from a storm. The interior is ornamented with statues carved enthusiastically from the rock by a local family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is definitely worth seeing if you are in Pizzo. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Calabria, rivalling the Riace Bronzes in Reggio di Calabria's archaeological museum.

The tartufo di Pizzo is a chocolate and hazelnut ice cream (gelato) shaped as a rough sphere, containing chocolate fudge sauce and coated in cocoa powder and sugar. The cafes around the main square in Pizzo all serve this speciality, and variations on it, with waiters producing a non-stop selection of of ice creams.

The centre of Pizzo is a picturesque network of narrow lanes, historic but bustling with everyday Calabrian life. The heart of town is Piazza della Repubblica, where travellers can relax at an outdoor table and enjoy a gelato. Close to the square is Pizzo's castle, known as the Castello Murat. It was built in the fifteenth century but is most celebrated for being the place where Napoleon's brother-in-law, Joachim Murat, was executed. The castle is open to the public, and also hosts special events.Downhill in the shadow of the castle is Pizzo's small harbour, with a pleasant seaside promenade. The railway station is along the coast in this direction. There is a stretch of beach here, and more beaches on the other side of town, a short drive away. In the summer tourist season a little tourist 'train' called the Pizzo Express takes visitors on a tour of Pizzo and to the Chiesa di Piedigrotta. Pizzo is conveniently placed on the coastal road and railway for visiting Tropea and the rest of the Costa degli Dei. If you have hired a car, you can tour the whole Tropea promontory visiting little coastal resorts and villages such as Briatico, Parghelia, Tropea, Capo Vaticano and Nicotera. The provincial capital, Vibo Valentia, is a short distance inland from Pizzo and is worth a visit for its mighty castle which has superb views. There are a number of interesting inland destinations for travellers with their own transport, such as Filadelfia, where there is a weekly market.

Further north up the Calabrian coast is the historic town of Amantea. Scilla, a very attractive fishing village and beach resort is around two hours away by train, and Reggio di Calabria is half an hour further - a long journey but worth it if you are interested in seeing the famous Greek statues, the Riace Bronzes, in the museum. From this stretch of coast there are summer boat trips to the Aeolian Islands, with departures from Pizzo as well as nearby Vibo Marina. These day trips are a good way to visit several of the beautiful islands including Stromboli, which is an active volcano.

About the Owner

My name is Candy, I live in London and it has always been my dream to own a holiday home in Italy. I have holidayed in different parts of Italy over many years but when I visited Calabria in 2008 for the first time I immediately knew that this was somewhere special and where I would purchase my holiday home. I fell in love with the unspoilt area, the wonderful weather, the food, the welcoming people and the gentle pace of life. I bought my apartment that year and furnished it to a high standard with all modern amenities so that it is now a fully equipped second home. I have enjoyed some great holidays at my apartment and hope to welcome you to my place in the sun.

Hi Candy

Just to let you know we are back home. We had a lovely week at your place. We were met by Emilio's friend Flavia, she was very friendly and helpful on the day of our arrival. All were fine, super weather even though we had a downpour when we first visited Pizzo but it did not last long and we managed to visit the castle and grotto. As we had the car we were able to visit surrounding areas and come back to chill out on the beach for rest of day.

Many thanks for the let and definitely will recommend to others and also keep for us when we want to have a short break as we know the area now.

All the best

Anick and Berty.

Perfect for a couple or with 1 child

  • 5 of 5

This property is adequate for your every needs.. has all mod cons cooker oven ironing board washing machine cutlery saucepans bbq air con etc etc...

It is located in a culture de sac so no passing traffic so children can play outside in a safe environment. Easy parking in a designated area very close to the studio.

On site there are 2 swimming pools tennis courts 5 a side football pitches and a restaurant... a private beach is also here.

This studio is perfect for a couple or a couple with a small child as there is a z bed available....

The site is only about 7 or 8 years old and is very good... only thing missing is a small shop to get milk etc.

Car is a must as it is remote with the nearest supermarket about 5km away.

The restaurant is the most expensive in the area ( 6 euro for a G& T .. 5 euro for a beer)

However other places are a lot cheaper.. we paid 2.5 euro for a G & T....

Tropea and Pizzo are nice towns with fab restaurants fab views and awesome beaches.

We never revisit the same place but this is a real tempter.... as it's perfect for us mature couple.... and the climate is brilliant without the humidity. .. unless we were lucky !!

Travelled end July beginning Aug 2016 for 2 weeks.

Thankyou so much Candy for the use of your apartment and to your management team Narissa, who met us on arrival and checked all was ok... perfect holiday for us.

Dolce Calabria, appartamento delizioso!

  • 5 of 5

I was in Italy many times and in Calabria second time. This stay was one of the best. Very nice resort and apartment. Generally south of Italy and especially Calabria is very good choice for the vcation. The apartment is very good equiped and also resort gives possibilities to have a good time. For active person two pools and fitnes, if you want to take a rest is also nice pleace. The pity is that pool-bar was not open during my stay, but there is restaurant at the pool and this is only bad think I remenber ( not so much bad).

Owner's Response: Thank you Pawel for taking the time to give a positive review of my apartment and also the Pizzo Beach Club resort during your two week stay. The pool bar was open earlier in the season but it was unfortunately closed while you were there to allow for work to be carried out to install a slide in the larger pool at the resort. However, I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed staying at my apartment and were able to take advantage of the many facilities that the resort offered during your stay. I am glad you enjoyed your holiday in Calabria and look forward to welcoming you to my apartment again in the future. Submitted by owner Candy Limbuvala on 19 Setpember 2012

Lovely time / Un délicieux moment

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time in your apartment at Pizzo. The apartment has everything one needs. Very clean and new. We used the terrasse for breakfasts, lunchs and diners, as it was not too hot (the sun hit the terrasse only the afternoon, which is great ! ).

The kitchen is very well furnished. It is a very nice touch to have DVD’s at hands and the Ipod base.

As for the Pizzo beach club, the smaller pool is nice and quiet compare to the bigger pool (next to the restaurant). The walk way to the beach goes through a lovely forest of pine trees (it’s about 10 min walk from the apartment). To the wonderful beach were long chairs and « parasols » await you.

Paul & Tom were very helpful in everything we needed.

Pity that there is the wifi only at the restaurant.

The air conditioning works very well.

We really enjoyed our time there.

From the Owner

I chose this property because it is situated on a secure gated modern resort with two outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, gym, restaurant, bar, shop and other on site facilities. It is also within 20 minutes drive from Lamezia Terme airport so is easily accessible for travellers who dont want a long drive from the airport. In addition, the property is a short 10 minute walk through a pine and eucalyptus forest to a lovely sandy beach.

This is an area of natural unspoilt beauty, which lies on the southern most tip of the Italian peninsula. There are many historic towns nearby to explore, stunning scenery and white sandy beaches. This part of Italy is well known for its fabulous beaches and landscape which will leave you in awe and attract you in coming back year after year. You can find something to suit everyone whether it is lazing on a sun kissed beach, walking along the mountain foot hills, shopping, sailing, taking day trips to the volcanic island of Stromboli, enjoying the many restaurants and bars in the nearby towns of Pizzo and Tropea, and visiting the many historical sites that this area has to offer.

The town of Pizzo nearby is famous for its world renowned Tartufo ice cream, markets and many historic places of interest. These include the UNESCO world heritage sites, national parks, local caves (Chiesetta de Piedigrotta) and sandy beaches.

Tropea, a family friendly holiday destination is famous for its beautiful beaches and excellent shopping facilities and inexpensive restaurants situated in maze of streets. The famous Church of Santa Maria dell'Isola cut into the rock overlooking the sea is not to be missed.

Sicily is also a short ferry ride away.

With both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian beaches to choose from, the opportunities are endless for relaxation on the many pristine beaches where you can enjoy an idyllic beach all to yourself or you can choose to explore the fantastic rugged and scenic landscape of this undiscovered beautiful part of Italy. To appreciate this area fully a car is recommended during your stay.

The area is wildly picturesque with white sand beaches tucked in between jagged cliffs and fertile plains, a real delight to explore. There are numerous sandy beaches hidden along the coast to choose from, many of which you rarely have to share, even during the height of summer. Those who love idyllic beaches all to themselves or those taking a romantic break in the sun will be absolutely at home in this part of Calabria.

Tropea, is a great tourist destination where the clean, clear and, gently sloping beach is a favourite with families. Snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing and deep sea fishing trips are all activities available close by.

The cuisine in the area is simply irresistible, and no Calabrian holiday would be complete without visiting one of the small family owned restaurants serving fabulous pizzas, seafood and tartufo, the fantastic local ice cream. The food you will experience in this part of the world is famed as being the spiciest in the whole of Italy, as well as being the most natural and healthiest. Most people returning from a self catering Calabria property return laden with chillies, olives, artichoke and many bottles of the sweet local wines grown in the area. Once you have tasted the sun-soaked quality, you too will be tempted into stocking your shelves with nothing but the best of local produce.

When you visit this part of Italy you will experience one of Italy’s sunniest regions. Even during December and January, temperatures hover between 10 and 15°C during daylight hours. The period between May and October sees average temperatures soaring past the 20°C mark, almost reaching 30°C in August. The evenings are wonderfully warm, so that eating outside on your own private patio outside the apartment is a delight.

The national parks of Serre, Aspromonte, Sila and Pollino all fall within the borders of Calabria, providing visitors with some of the most beautiful natural surroundings in which to walk and ride. There are many fantastic trails to follow.

Lamezia Terme Airport (SUF) with direct flights to London Stansted is a 15 minutes drive from the apartment.

Car hire is strongly advised for the duration of your stay and numerous car hire companies are available at Lamezia Terme airport. It is recommended that you pre-book your car before arrival to avoid disappointment and to obtain the car of your choice.
