About this property

Beautiful 18th century stone farmhouse with pool at the Mas d'Arjac, Aveyron

The Mas d'Arjac is a tiny hamlet beautifully set in woodlands and fields far from the madding crowd. The gardens and grounds of the Mas offer a haven of peace and quiet, whilst the atmospheric bastide town of Villefranche de Rouergue is just a 15/20 minute drive away.
Most of the stone buildings of le Mas d’Arjac date from the early 18th century. The keystone of the Long House is dated 1738, and the building remained largely untouched until its recent and sympathetic restoration by local artisans who used only traditional methods and natural materials so that nothing has been lost of the beauty of the original building or of its character. The interiors retain all of their original beams and stone features. At the same time, we have added luxuries such as solid oak floors and terra cotta tiles which are in keeping with the age and style of the home but with the addition of under floor heating as well as modern insulation to keep the houses warm in winter and cool in summer.

The Long House, built in stone and comprising a salon with a large, open fireplace, a farmhouse kitchen/dining room, a bathroom with shower, lavabo and wc, and double (or twin) bedroom and a bedroom with two double beds and one single on the first floor. The Yellow Room (accessed via a short flight of 6 steps from outside the kitchen door of the Long House) provides a further double (or twin) bedroom with en suite bathroom containing shower, lavabo and wc.
There is a modern and well-equipped kitchen in the Long House with an oak farmhouse dining table for comfy and elegant indoor dining. There is a comfortable living room. There is ample, shaded outdoor seating on the terrace of the Long House or on the pool terrace. There is also a Weber bbq.
The Petite Maison is also available at a supplement and sits next to the Long House and consists of two rooms. The downstairs room contains twin bunk beds and a sink. The upstairs room on the mezzanine level contains a king size bed which can also be arranged as two singles. Guests of the Petite Maison use the toilet and bathroom facilities of the Long House or laundry room.

Bedrooms

Bedroom 1 Yellow Room - 1 extra large double bed - can be arranged as two singles.
Bedroom 2 - 1 extra large double bed - can be arranged as two singles.
Bedroom 3 - 3 Double Beds.

Note: The Yellow Room has an en suite shower room and is accessed via a short flight of external stairs outside the kitchen door of the Long House.

Bathrooms

Bathroom 1 - Toilet , shower enclosure on the ground floor.
Bathroom 2 - Toilet , shower enclosure , en suite in the Yellow Room

The gardens of the Mas d'Arjac are extensive and beautifully maintained, and the meadows and woodland of the Arjac estate extend down the valley to the spring and stream.

Guests of the Long House have exclusive use from end of May til end of September of the 16m x 4m swimming pool (constant depth of 1.6m) which is situated adjacent to the owner’s house, as well as the pool deck and furniture between 9h00 and 22h00 each day.

Please see the aerial photo for an idea of the property's layout.

There is parking for two guest cars outside the front entrance to the property and ample parking for extra cars in the meadow just down the lane.
Due to the rocky terrain on which the hamlet has been constructed, Arjac is unfortunately not suitable for guests with limited mobility.

We provide excellent information, both pre-arrival and during the stay, so that our guests can make a quick start on their holiday planning.
We also provide IGN maps of the area so that guests can enjoy the many gentle walks and longer rambles of this most beautiful area.
We also know local restaurants inside out and can help our guests with reservations at the best tables in the region!

An idyllic retreat in rural Aveyron
Our holiday group comprised of 5 adults and 2 young children and we stayed in this wonderful property (in the Long House) for just under 2 weeks. Our communications with Simon (the owner) before arrival were great, with Simon giving us a very good idea of what to expect before we’d even left for France. The Long House is a gorgeous character property, well equipped and very tastefully furnished for a very comfortable stay. We enjoyed many evening dinners out on the terrace, trying out some of the local wines and cheeses (including some amazing tinned lentils, recommended by Simon!). The pool is stunning and a great place to unwind on sunny afternoons after a morning of sightseeing. The local area is beautiful with lots of medieval villages and towns to explore and Arjac is perfectly situated for this. One of our favourite villages, Najac, is only a short drive away and well worth a visit - the fortress is just so impressive. The market at Villefranche-de-Rouergue is also not to be missed! Simon and Peter were fantastic hosts and very accommodating; nothing was too much trouble. Simon was a wonderful source of local knowledge with great suggestions for exploring the area, including local play parks to keep our three-year old entertained. You simply couldn’t wish for better hosts! We had a brilliant time at Arjac and will certainly be looking to return to this beautiful property to carry on exploring this gorgeous part of France.

Comfort and tranquility in blissful rural setting
This is a comfortable, well-equipped house in a beautiful setting. Our host, Simon, was welcoming and really helpful with recommendations for activities in the local area. It is well placed for a wealth of outings all within a 1 hour drive of the the house. We also thoroughly enjoyed spending time at the house and going for walks in the immediate area as well as sitting by the picturesque, sun-soaked pool and eating meals in the outside dining area. Paradise! We can highly recommend a stay at Mas d'Arjac and hope to return.

Location, charm and comfort
Our visit to Arjac was especially enjoyable for many reasons, but it starts with the property itself. The renovated Long House where we stayed was tastefully and thoughtfully renovated. The descriptions of the kitchen, salon and bedrooms were as described and more than adequate for our use. We enjoyed gathering in the well-appointed kitchen and on the terrace just out the door. The owner provided us clear direction and service, but the onsite "hosts," Francoise and Bernhard, were really a joy, answering every question and being available when needed. Apart from the physical grounds, Arjac and the area around it, the Quercy, is one of the most charming pastoral areas we have enjoyed in France. The area is rich in medieval sites, easily reached by a quick car trip or even on bicycles. From the house, it is easy to visit some of the more notable cities and villages even as far away as the Lot. Arjac is an ideal base for exploring. We have already recommended the property to friends and family, but we've told them that they will have to get in the queue behind us as we are sure to return.

Love, love, love everything about it!
From the moment I contacted Simon, I knew we had found the perfect house. It is located in a beautiful part of France, away from the busy touristy places. Simon and Peter were perfect hosts and anticipating any of our needs, always available to make our stay lovely. We were 6 (two adults and 4 teenagers/young adults) and the house felt big. We spent our days visiting the most exquisite villages in the area. In the afternoon, we would come back to the house to "farniente" near the lovely pool. The house is comfortable and decorated with taste. Simon and Peter showed a lot of generosity towards our family and we will always be grateful to them. We highly recommend this rental! About the host

Host profile image
Hi, my name is Simon Clark and I am the owner of Le Mas d'Arjac. I love this part of France and am completely in love with Arjac and the surrounding area! After a long career in tour operating working for a couple of Britain's best known travel companies, I decided to retrain as a teacher and worked in one of the UK's most prestigious schools for 13 years as a teacher of French and Spanish. I have now retired from teaching and live here permanently where I am lucky enough to welcome and look after families from all over the world. I also host cultural events where teachers of various arts bring their students to work in the tranquility and beauty of the Mas d'Arjac.

Why they chose this property

The Mas d'Arjac is superbly situated at the head of a valley, surrounded by woodland and fields, and is very green and very peaceful. The collection of stone buildings which forms the Mas is exceptionally picturesque, and the gardens, terraces and pool area are ample and well maintained for the benefit of our guests. I bought the property to create a haven of relaxation and good-living, and also to run a small arts centre based on the recently restored Atelier which is a beautiful recital room and rehearsal space in the grounds. See my own website for details of yoga and other catered specialist weeks in the Spring and Autumn seasons.

What makes this property unique

I had visited 29 properties in SW France before setting foot in Arjac. It was love at first sight! Most of all I loved its setting, the beauty of the stone buildings and the extensive terraced gardens and pool. Since restoring the Long House and the barn (now the Atelier) the Mas is attracting guests who appreciate the tranquility and high standards of accommodation. They also like the discreet service which we are able to provide (when required) for ideas for visits, restaurants, local markets etc enabling our guests to settle in and start relaxing more quickly.
