Summary

The Crook is a beautiful, Grade II listed house, dating back to the 18th century and located in the heart of the quintessential English market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. The house contains a wealth of character features, including wooden beams, flagstone floors, exposed walls and fireplaces. Complementing these period features, The Crook has been decorated, furnished and equipped in a warm and contemporary style, making the house a perfect holiday choice for families or groups of friends.

The Crook sleeps up to eight people in four bedrooms – see bedroom configuration below. There is a family bathroom and downstairs cloakroom.

Description

The Crook's front door on Sheep Street opens into an entrance hall, with flagstone flooring, which leads to:

•Living room: The cosy living room contains a wood burning stove (logs provided) and a plasma TV with DVD player. There is also a DVD and book library, plus a selection of games;

•Kitchen/dining room: The dining room is the heart of the house, with exposed walls, wooden beams, flagstone flooring and a large brick fireplace (no longer used as a fire). There is a large dining table, with seating for 8, and a plasma TV. The new kitchen is bright and airy, with a door leading directly out to the courtyard garden. Equipped to a high standard, the kitchen contains a range cooker with gas hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. There is also a fabulous dual temperature controlled wine fridge and a Nespresso coffee machine (capsules are not provided);

•Downstairs cloakroom: Accessed via the original back door of The Crook, contains a WC and basin;

•Small storage cupboard.

A stairway from the hall leads upstairs to the first floor:

•Bedroom 1: Contains a king size bed and plenty of wardrobe space;

•Bedroom 2: Contains two single beds, which can be joined together to form a super king size bed;

•Bathroom: Refurbished to an exceptional standard, the bathroom contains a bath with overhead shower, a WC and basin. The tiled floor has under floor heating.

From the first floor landing, an old door opens onto the staircase to the second floor:

•Bedroom 3: The staircase opens out directly into a spacious eaves bedroom, with beautiful exposed beams and a super king size bed;

•Bedroom 4: At the top of the stairs, connected to bedroom 3, is a small eaves bedroom. This room contains two small single beds (75cm wide). A particular feature of this room, which makes it ideal for younger children, is that the door from bedroom 3 can be safely shut but left open at the top, so that adults in bedroom 3 can keep an eye on the children.

Back downstairs, a door from the kitchen leads directly outside to a fabulous courtyard garden, which includes a stunning open fireplace (logs provided). Sheltered from the wind and with ample seating and dining space for eight guests, the courtyard is perfect for entertaining, whatever the season. The courtyard is well lit for evening dining.

Avoid - looks nothing like the pictures!

Firstly, the 1 star rating (instead of no stars) is for its location. It is in a fantastic location, walking distance to Stow. We stayed in the back bedroom so no road noise, however if you pull the short straw and get the road side bedroom - the traffic noise is 24/7. Parking wasn't an issue for us. It's great driving distance to all sight-seeing and really close to Daylsford Farm. This is the ONLY good point.

The condition of this property is poor. It is not average - it is poor. The below points are just some of the issues we noticed and that was 2 people staying in a 6 person property.

1. The downstairs toilet – very dirty – needs bleaching.

2. General wear-and-tear. It is in desperate need of fresh paint and handy-work. Walls are all scuffed, stained and look terrible.

3. The radiators need bleeding – in particular the kitchen which sounds like rain coming in! The 1st bedroom up the stairs also needs it.

4. The sofa would have to be the worst offense – it is literally on an angle. You have to sit with pillows under your bottom otherwise you roll off! The whole room smells like wet dog and the old blanket on top isn’t fooling anyone! If you are more than say 3 people - you will be very cramped in the living room.

5. 2nd bedroom near bathroom – that rug is disgusting and needs replacing! The side table is cracked. The window is broken and doesn’t stay open and well and the lock isn’t working to close it. The cupboard is full of dust – coat hangers needed wiping before anything went in.

7. The carpet is filthy and covered in stains in most places.

8. The bathroom is ok – minus the mouldy seal. The water pressure is a joke – I had to book in to get a blow dry as washing shampoo out of thick hair is impossible. The tub is very slippery and the floor mat on offer is yellow and mould starting to grow.

Also, bathroom is tiny - so if 6 people are sharing - good luck!

Having read the negative reviews - it seemed pointless to contact the owners as the issues raised were not going to be solved within a couple days and not without disruption. On return home i did complain - no response - i threatened with a bad review - i got an email acknowledgment (no apology), a week passed by, another threat and then i got a response. Which basically said they are aiming to do work on the property but haven't had a chance (the complaints i am making have been raised over 3 years ago by people).

Would not advise staying here

Owner's Response: ""Character Cottages, as a marketing agency, does not look after or maintain any cottages. The following is written by the property manager of The Crook: "On the rare occasion that we receive negative comments about any of our homes, we are disappointed as so much effort goes in to the maintenance and preparation. Our highest priority is to ensure that our guests’ expectations are exceeded, and for the most part, we are very successful in this respect. Despite our best efforts, things go wrong from time to time, as they do with any property. When this occurs, we move heaven and earth to rectify/repair/replace as necessary; always as quickly as we can, with minimum disruption to the guests. All we ask is that we are notified when an issue arises, so that we have the ability to take whatever action necessary. Unfortunately, we were not afforded the opportunity in this case. These guests stayed at the property for seven full days, during which time they did not make contact with us by any method (email, text, 24-hour phone service) to advise of any issue. We were only made aware of her complaint two days after departure, by which time, new guests were in the property. When the new guests called to say that there was a problem with the hot water, we arranged for an engineer to attend the same day. He discovered that a part on the boiler had failed, which was immediately replaced. Had we been told of a problem by the author of this review, we could have rectified the issue not only for them, but for the incoming guests too. Any points raised by guests are fully investigated and, during the process for this complaint, we discovered that the photograph showing the ‘dirty toilet’ was actually taken on the day of departure – 7 days after the party of six arrived! It was, without question, spotless when they arrived, or they surely would have provided a photo taken on that arrival day. Providing false documentation with the intention of deceiving the managing company, and using points from previous guest comments is wholly indefensible. In any event, we responded, in full, to the guest complaint within 8 days of receipt. We advised that the majority of carpets in the property had recently been replaced, and that the remaining would be done so within the next few weeks. All our homes are constantly under review and maintenance schedules are in place for redecoration, replacement as necessary.'"

Sitting elegantly in the middle of the world famous Cotswold’s countryside, Stow-on-the-Wold is the quintessential English market town. Stow is a natural and historic meeting place, with a fine selection of 16th century Cotswold stone shops, luxury hotels, chic bistros, inns, elegant manor house hotels and cosy teashops. The combination of rural informality and fine food and drink makes this small market town the ideal destination for a holiday or weekend break.

Along with Moreton-in-Marsh and Bourton-in-the-Water, Stow is one of the best known of the small Cotswold towns. It is the highest point in the Cotswolds, standing on top of an 800 feet hill, and is situated at the meeting place of seven roads, including the Roman Fosse Way, which runs from Exeter to Lincoln in an almost straight line.

Golf: There are many golf clubs in and around the North Cotswolds, including:

- Naunton Downs Golf Club, Naunton;

- The Wychwood Golf Club, Lyneham;
