The Mill and Mill House have been restored to a very high standard and are full of character - chestnut beams, wooden floors and the original grinding stones. The houses are secluded, situated at the edge of a hamlet and are completely separate but can be interlinked. The kitchens are full equipped and are ideal for those who love to cook - and each house has a separate dining room and a comfortable lounge and a separate pool. Centrally heated. Perfect for a peaceful holiday in the scenic Garfagnana, known for its gastronomic traditions, authentic reasonably priced restaurants and countryside activities. The walled town of Castiglione with bars, shops and restaurant is nearby. The ancient city of Lucca is 1 hour away, Pisa airport 1.5 hour. Good train links from Castelnuovo. Relax by the pool, walk in the countryside or explore the medieval hill top villages of this undiscovered part of Tuscany. In the evenings eat out under the stars or enjoy a meal in one of many recommended local restaurants. Both properties have WIFI with good coverage throughout the properties.
The Mill and Mill House are ideal to rent together for large groups or families sharing - sleeping 17 plus sofa bed.
Outside: The Mill and Mill House are set in a peaceful location with their own garden with gazebo and garden furniture overlooking the river. The two private pools each have large wooden decking areas with sun loungers. In addition to the breakfast balcony for the Mill there is also a stone terrace with loungers overlooking the pool. The Mill House has a walled terrace and pergola with vines. There is an outside table tennis table and basketball net and a barbecues for each property.
In the future we are looking to offer afternoon cookery courses followed by a meal and evening wine tastings as options during your stay. Let us know if you would be interested.
My father grew up in this small hamlet in Tuscany before leaving for America in the 1950's. When we had a young family we had the chance to buy the old Mill and Mill House which were derelict by the 1990's and restore many of the original features and for us it became a family project, uncovering layers of family history.
Adele Bright purchased this house in 1995
The Mill and Mill House were the centre of community life in the area for generations. My great-great grandparents were the millers here in the 1880's and the properties stayed in the family until the 1980's. We rescued them from dereliction and again they have become an important part of the history of the village. Many of the locals have helped us to bring these important buildings back to life over many years.
We have maintained all of the original features of the buildings and the Mill still has all of the original mill stones and hoppers in its own little museum. The original chestnut beams and floors have been sanded and waxed, and new and old furniture has been chosen to complement the character of the houses.
When booking both properties together there is a discounted rate available. Please ask for details.

I cannot recommend these properties more. we were lucky enough to stay in both as a large family group this summer, and it is hard to limit the superlatives. Beautiful setting, very well equipped, interesting and maintained properties, fabulous gardens with as much space as you could want. plus the luxury of two pools..totally spoilt. we were in a mixed group...4 kids with 2 two year olds.....they needed supervision in the gardens, but this is identified by adele and chris. I found them exceptionally helpful, and easy to liaise with, but not at all intrusive..just so grateful that they give others the opportunity to spend time and experience their home in Italy. The area was also a pull for the cyclists and walkers in their group. Adele put us in touch with a good company for reasonable hire of good road bikes, and the properties would be a special hire for a club group of cyclists too...perfect for a hill training camp! I haven't got a bad word to say, lots of happy memories, and certainly hope to return
We went with a large family group , taking the whole house as one . It is an absolute gem , like nothing you would expect to find from a everyday brochure !
It is a quite remote but that adds to the charm of the place . No need to worry about being noisy neighbours ! We ate in most nights and just migrated between the pool area , the terrace and the vine covered patio . It was far too hot to walk far but my daughter and I loved exploring the stream and waterfalls nearby .
It is superbly fitted out with everything you could need especially the kitchens and it feels like someone with very good taste has loaned you their family home for the week !
We went to the beautiful town of Castiglione for an "early beer " a few times . Sit on the terrace of the terrace bar and enjoy fantastic views and charming service . The little shop sells all the essentials you could need from prosciutto to footballs , although the supermarkets in Pieve offer a bigger choice . There is a latge supply of wine and beer in the house which you replace or pay for using an honesty box and that came in very handy
Lucca was delightful and Pisa was everything you expect including the crowds !
If you want to get away from it all , or use it as base to tour the countryside it is superb ! Just one tip ; get a reasonably powerful hire car as a lot of the hills around about are otherwise a first gear crawl !
Our group aged from 14-80 all loved it !
The Mill and the Mill House are located on the side of a stunning Tuscan valley, far from the beaten track but with easy access to beautiful walks and adventures for young and old. The walled city of Castiglione is twenty minutes away, and Castelnuovo (with its rail links) a little further, so those looking to explore the region will not be disappointed. We visited in late Spring / early Summer and it is a beautiful place to be at that time of year. Do not miss Lucca.
Although we stayed in the Mill House, both properties ooze with the love, though and attention to detail that Adele and Chris have poured into their complete restoration of the properties. They are family homes in which we genuinely felt that our family was welcome.
The facilities are excellent. The garden is spacious and well-kept, with plentiful facilities around the pool, the BBQ, games and sports. Our two young children (5 and 3) had enormous fun exploring the nooks and crannies of the house, garden and valley beyond. The kitchen is extraordinarily well-equipped and it simply does not feel like a rental property once you are unpacked.
We recommend heartily.
Spectacular location (and well worth the slightly nerve wracking drive up and down the mountain), very well equipped, lots of information about things to do locally and great support from the UK. We flew from East Midlands to Pisa and hired a car through Hertz, visited Lucca and cycled around the walls, walked up the quiet road to Valbona and picnicked there and played in the stream. Visited Grotto del Vento on a bad weather day and BBQ'd and played in the pool and garden when the weather good. Managed to fit a quick trip in to see the leaning tower on way back to Pisa airport. A very relaxing break and something to suit everyone (we have 3 children aged 4,6, and 8). Saving our pennies to go again.......
We spent a week in this fantastic place, a typical tuscany house with an extraordenary scenery. The children loved to swim in the pool and to discover the river and the waterfall. The adults enjoyed the peace and quiet and the totally relaxing surrounding. Adele provided us with excellent information on what to see and do. Thanks a lot for your hospitality
Thank you for letting us use these beautiful properties. We have just returned from 5 days away with two other families where we enjoyed great food, incredible weather and amazing scenery whilst staying in these clean, comfortable, well equipped and beautifully restored houses.
It was lovely to watch the children just being 'children' - enjoying playing in the stream, gathering wood to stoke the pizza oven and then snuggling up to watch a DVD in the evening - perfect! Meanwhile, we relaxed on the terrace enjoying each others' company and basking in the sunshine. We were lucky enough to be able to eat outside for all of our meals - quite something in October - and it was lovely to eat breakfast on the patio and watch the sun come up over the hill tops.
We did venture out to two interesting local towns, both steeped in history, to enjoy lunch one afternoon and an evening meal on another occasion.
Everything we could have hoped for, and more, was in these properties, both of which are equipped with quality items.
Thank you to Adele for providing excellent directions both to and from Pisa airport and generally for making sure we had enough information to ensure we could make the most of our visit.
I would certainly recommend these properties to others and hope to visit myself again in the near future.
