Very disappointing, dirty, ill-maintained cottage. BE WARNED!!! One star as you cannot give nil!

  • 1 of 5

We were booked from Wednesday 12th to Sunday 16th July, we stayed for 30 minutes! The cottage smells damp and musty when opening the door but that is just the start, the door mat was filthy and this cottage had clearly not been cleaned recently. The crockery and cutlery was dirty and the kitchen utensils should long since have been thrown away. There was hair laying in the bottom of the shower and as for the toilet brush, don't even go there. The bath sheets were stained and felt like sandpaper and there was no foot mat outside of the shower.

Every surface was covered in dust and hair and the cobwebs were thick, the windows filthy and rotten.

We have contacted the owner who has replied saying he would investigate our findings and get back to us-he hasn't despite saying he welcomes feedback.

The biggest joke is that we were charged a fee for cleaning.

We have stayed at many cottages over the last few years in the U.K. and never had issues, we are not serial complainers but this property is by far the worst that we have ever experienced.

Owner's Response: Dear reader, there are two sides to every story, the guest left within 30 minutes of arrival and didn't attempt to knock on my door to enable me to address their concern, I would addressed the their issues, refunded the cleaning charge and if I felt appropriate compensated for inconvenience. There was some minor dust and the cottage was a little musty having been closed up for a few days In between gusts and we could have aired it better by opening the winsows before arrival, the cottage is 360 years old. The towels are new for this season, we have several sets and they are pandered, the only cobwebs I could find were deep inside the open inglenook fire place chimney breast. They wrote to me with their concerns and I respond with my findings, offering half their fee and their cleaning fee back as a gesture of good will having left me in a situation with out a booking. It is my belief they simply didn't find he cottage to their taste and decided to leave. I ask readers to review other feedback and make up your own minds. We are not perfect and sometimes miss things, but as we say in our welcome pack and correspondence, if something is wrong, please don't hesitate to contact us to put it right. We only live next door.

Lovely little cottage, perfect base for visiting surrounding areas

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage, we arrived late and the key was waiting for us in the front door, owner lives opposite but we didn't hear from them at all, left to our own devices. Perfect base for visiting the surrounding area, we loved our stay there

Charming cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was very charming but there were a few issues that we pointed out to the owner ....unable to regulate the heating as it was on a timer from the property next door , so had to wait in the cold till radiators came on . Deterred from using open fire due to safety issues of the thatched cottage next door . General cleanliness in arrival , fridge and oven dirty . Would have appreciated some milk on arrival , whether fresh or capsules to make a cup of tea , especially people had written in the review book that they had been welcomed with a bottle of wine !!!!!!!! Not us !!!

However , lovely location for exploring beautiful Dorset !!!!

All in all a lovely cottage but felt we , as paying guests, needed to point out the heating situation ... luckily the weather was beautiful outside but we are still only April and the cottage is an old house and gets cold when heating off !!! .

Good luck to the owners in the future .

Disappointing cottage stay

  • 2 of 5

Property is indeed quaint but heating, hot water and cleanliness are problems. The under floor heating, as mentioned in Amenities, does not work, on-demand hot water system is inconsistent and many spider webs that have been there for awhile. The owners were nice and came over to resolve the hot water issue. It would have been helpful to know the heating radiators were on preset timers that came on for a few hours in the evening and then a few hours in the morning. When they were cold when we woke up in the morning and the cottage was quite cold, we assumed our heating system was malfunctioning. Even after heating for a few hours, it was generally chilly in the cottage. I don't believe we would stay there again.

Lovely sanctuary in an undiscovered part of the English Countryside

  • 5 of 5

We had the most relaxing and recharging midweek stay and our 9 year old son joined us for the weekend...all we now hear is "when are we going back to Monk's Cottage". We recommend this cottage to anyone that loves the peace and quiet and wants to explore the abundance of magical wildlife ( deer) and footpaths all around. The owners are very friendly and helpful and suggested an Ordinance Survey map in order to make the most of the area...this was a very good suggestion. We will be back!

Peaceful place to stay in a beautiful part of the country.

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely break with our dogs and walked miles in the beautiful countryside managing to pass through parts of Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire. Loved the period charm of Monk's cottage and the extra little touches which made it feel so homely and welcoming. The underfloor heating made the cottage really cozy.
