Situated just 3 miles south of Burgundy, L'Ecluse is a charming cottage with private pool and large gardens situated on the banks of the Roanne-Digoin canal. It is a 15 minute walk from the quiet village of Briennon with its marina, canal museum and local amenities - bank, restaurants, small supermarket, bakeries, pharmacy & cafés.

We named our gîte after the nearby canal lock (l’écluse in French) which raises and lowers the barges about 20’ or 6m on their way to and from Roanne. The approach to L’Ecluse is down a leafy lane which winds down to the bridge over the canal & the cottage is situated about 50m to the left just beside the towpath.

L'Ecluse has been sympathetically restored retaining many original features whilst incorporating a modern kitchen & bathrooms thereby offering a relaxing & comfortable holiday retreat. The whole property has been decorated with a black & cream theme with cool tiled floors downstairs and pale wooden flooring upstairs.

The ground floor accommodation comprises: entrance hall, a well equipped, fitted kitchen, a twin bedroom, en suite shower room/loo, laundry room and the salon/dining room. On the first floor are 2 double bedrooms, 1 twin bedroom, and bathroom plus separate loo.

The main door leads into the hallway with coat & shoe racks. To the left is the kitchen fitted with cream, high gloss units with hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer & 1½ sink. There is also a toaster, kettle, Le Creuset & Viners cookware plus plenty of glasses & crockery.

To the right is the twin bedded downstairs bedroom with views to the side of the property over the orchard. The bedroom leads to the downstairs shower room with wash hand basin & loo which then leads to the laundry room with automatic washing machine & where the cleaning equipment is stored.

Ahead is the lounge & dining area with comfy sofas & large dining table seating 8 plus an attractive pine dresser. This spacious room is dual aspect with views to the canal at the front and over the beautiful countryside & garden to the rear.

Stairs from the lounge lead to the first floor where there 3 further bedrooms –one double overlooking the orchard to the side of the property and one double & one twin bedded room with views over the canal to the front.

There is also a bathroom with bath, separate shower, wash hand basin, bidet & loo. Next door there is also an additional loo with wash hand basin – handy when the bathroom is occupied!

The garden is down a flight of stairs mainly & laid to lawn with the large swimming pool (12x6m) surrounded with its spacious flagstoned ‘plage’ – ideal for dining ‘au plein air’ or relaxing on a lounger.

After careers in I.T., Elite Gîtes was set up in 2005 by husband and wife team, David and Jacqueline Murphy.

As a family, we had rented gîtes in different areas of France and we spent many happy times together experiencing what France has to offer. However, we always felt that it could have been a better experience for us – maybe better kitchen appliances and equipment, perhaps a better standard of accommodation and/or cleanliness or even the beds made up before we arrived – we’re sure you know what we mean! Like many others, we dreamt of having our own gîtes business in France and we wanted to offer the best possible quality gîte you could have at a reasonable rental.

To this end, we moved to France in 2002 and have spent the last 10 years renovating 4 properties - 2 of which now form the basis of Elite Gites property portfolio. We also operate a Chambre d'hote (bed & breakfast) from our own home. For the past 8 years we have welcomed many satisfied clients to our gites.

This place is very clean and well-maintained. We appreciated the kitchen and its facilities, the extra comfort of the bathrooms, and the very pleasant bedrooms... We would recommend it to friends looking for a quiet place, but situated not to far from the city of Roanne, for shopping and entertainment. We also enjoyed the walks along the Canal.

We found the listing description accurate although the photographs did not do the property justice at all, we had expected a more basic and smaller property from the photographs, we were, therefore, very pleasantly surprised on our arrival. The property was beautifully presented and immaculately clean. The grounds were also larger than expected and well maintained. The swimming pool was a great size and also very clean and well maintained. We found the owners to be extremely welcoming, very helpful and discreet. We would highly recommend this property to friends and relatives. We found the local pizzeria excellent, good service and food. We were only at the house for one week with four teenagers looking to relax after exams, consequently we cannot comment on local attractions as we mostly just swam and stayed at the house.. There was just one thing we would have found useful and that was to have had table and chairs out the front of the house, even just a bench to sit with a book/coffee to enjoy the lovely canal veiws. It was quite a long way down steep steps to take food down to outside table and chairs. That really is the only thing we found to be 'missing'.

When we first came to France to view potential properties to buy, we were shown L'Ecluse. It was in a sad state - nearly everything had to be updated or replaced - including the wiring!. However, we felt that we could update the interior to be a comfortable holiday home given its location on a canal just south of Burgundy. Once the house was updated we tackled the large gardens and installed a large swimming pool which we knew would be ideal for many holidaymakers - whether they be families with young children keen on activities or groups of older travellers looking for tranquility.

L'Ecluse is situated on the banks of the Roanne-Digoin canal near the village of Briennon with its marina, canal museum and local amenities (bank, restaurants, small supermarket, bakeries, pharmacy & cafes). Briennon is just to the south of Burgundy in the Loire department and has varied and beautiful scenery all around. Within easy reach are the vineyards of Burgundy and Beaujolais, the volcanic region around Le Puy, Lyon - the second city in France plus many pretty villages, historic churches all waiting to be explored locally. Cycling, walking, canoeing are all available for the more active visitor and leisurely trips along the canal for the less active! The nearest towns are Charlieu and Roanne both of which have local markets (Wednesday/Saturday and Tuesday/Friday respectively) and a good range of shops - both food and non-food! There are many local restaurants offering a variety of menus (and prices!) and many cafes offering a traditional 'Menu du Jour' - always good value!

Other Activities: Skiing is available at Chalmazel & Loges des Gardes - under an hour away by car.

We think many people dream of owning a cottage by a canal - we know we did! The house had belonged to a family who had travelled by barge from Paris to L'Ecluse in the early 20th century after their other barge burnt to the waterline and couldn't be repaired. As property was too expensive in Paris, the whole family decamped to Briennon where land was much cheaper. They built the current house to be a one storied bistro and grocery shop for the many bargees who passed daily taking tiles from the nearby tileworks to other parts of France. Eventually, a second floor was added where people could stay overnight. The house opposite on the other side of the canal was a cafe and had telephone number 3!!! Now, many of our clients have enjoyed their stay in our little corner of France and have whiled away many an hour watching the odd boat go by whilst sipping a glass of wine under one of the lime trees!
