About the property

Cosy 2 public/2 bedroom spacious traditional croft-house with sea views

The traditional stone built croft cottage has 2 public rooms - lounge with cosy wood burning stove (initial supply of logs and coal supplied) Wi-Fi enabled satellite TV/DVD player, i-pod docking station, dining room seating 6 people also with satellite TV, library of books, games, puzzles, DVD's, videos, maps, details of the many local forestry/coastal walks. Both public rooms and bedrooms with sea views. All electricity, heating, Wi-Fi, bed linen and towels included in tariff. Large enclosed garden which dogs love, with panoramic views across Loch Bay and onwards to Outer Islands - amazing sunsets.

There is also free internet and Broadband connection. There is a payphone in the cottage which accepts incoming calls but whilst the mobile connection is poor inside the cottage, mobile signal can be found in the garden.

There are two large comfortable bedrooms - one double (King size bed) and one twin - both having extra fold-down single beds. Bed linen and towels are all supplied. Electric blankets on the bed with extra blankets supplied for the chillier evenings. Again both bedrooms with sea views.

Fully equipped kitchen with large fridge freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave, toasty maker, coffee machine, electric kettle etc.

Waternish is the central of the most prominent peninsulas to project north west into the Minch. It is an extremely pretty area and very green. There are a series of scattered settlements here including Bay, Lusta, Stein Hallin, Halistra and Trumpan. There are several places worth a visit whether it be historic or just local attractions. These include 'Fairy Bridge' dating from the early 1800's and apparently named because it was believed to be the haunt of fairies and where the then Chief MacLeod was given the famous 'FairyFlag' by his fairy wife (before she left him returning to her own people) to be waved only three times if the MacLeod Clan were in danger. The flag has been waved on two occasions and is now kept in Dunvegan Castle. Dunvegan Castle (about 15 minute drive) is the ancestral home of the chieftains of the Clan MacLeod. The castle can trace its history back to around 1200AD.

Also to be found in the Dunvegan area the beautiful Coral Beach - one of the best beaches in Skye with great views of the highest sea cliffs in Skye, Dunvegan Head.

The historic Trumpan church in Waternish was the scene of a bloody massacre of the MacLeod clan by the MacDonalds in the middle of the 16th century. There is an excellent picnic area here where you can enjoy superb views. Nearby you will find the path leading to the Waternish lighthouse for those of you who enjoy walking.

About Mrs Marion MacLeod

My parents were both born in Skye - my mother in Waternish and my father in the South of Skye in a now deserted village called Kilbride near Torrin. My husband was born in a cottage in Camus Lusta in Waternish. All fluent gaelic speakers.

Mrs Marion MacLeod purchased this cottage in 1936

Why Mrs Marion MacLeod chose Isle of Skye

Eilean Isay has been in the family since 1936 when it was built with stone brought down from the quarry by horse and cart by my husbands ancestors. Could not anticipate not being able to spend time in the lovely cottage - my second home! After the fast pace of city dwelling, there is nothing more relaxing than to sit outside the cottage and take in the amazing surrounding scenery and just chill out.

Perfect getaway on Skye

Left on Aug 25, 2017 for a stay in Aug 2017

This is a brilliant place to experience the Isle of Skye - sufficiently remote, with a cosy inn and an excellent restaurant within walking distance. Spectacular views, easy driving access to amenities like shops, and very well fitted. A marvellous place!

What makes this cottage unique

The views from Eilean Isay are truly spectacular and to watch the sun set across Loch bay is truly amazing - one couldn't help but fall in love with the peace and tranquility of this location. Even on the darkest of nights, this has got to be one of the best places on the planet to stargaze or to see the distant lights of passing ships sailing across the Minch.

Lovely spot - great views - lovely garden - but....

  • 2 of 5

The house is in a lovely spot with fabulous views and the garden is really lovely, but the house (for the price) is a let down. It is cluttered with all kinds of things - including things that are broken. Some of the lights didn't work e.g. in the bathroom. There are enough pans to sink a ship - problem is you can't find anything through the mess in the drawer. And you have to be very careful opening that drawer as the front is falling off.

There is an awful smell that comes from the headboard in the bedroom and the glasses stored in the sideboard smelt disgusting. There was also a very odd smell when you boil the kettle - a combination of stale curry and sweaty feet.

2 cockroaches also met their end while we were there. And the fly catchers on the windows were not nice either with their dead flies already there when we arrived.

And behind the sofa - not sure when that last saw a hoover.

It is a mish mash of stuff that is just a mess. Worse though is the cable from one of the lights in the living room to the plug - it has bare wires! Very dangerous!

The beds were comfortable and the sofa (between all the cushions) was comfortable.

We also wrote a question to the owner during our stay but received no response.

It is a shame - the house could be really lovely but it needs a real deep clean and sort out.

Owner's Response: Really confused by this review of the cottage. Reviews on either side of this week awarded 4/5 stars - as can be shown and only today had contact from current guests confirming that they were delighted with the cottage and everything was to their satisfaction. I am disappointed guests felt the cottage was cluttered but I do try to provide a large choice of reading material for both adults and children along with a large selection of games, DVD'S and aim for a "cosy" and child friendly look. I feel it is important to offer guests and especially children, alternative pursuits especially if weather is not favourable for walking etc. Everything in the cottage is there to offer guests as much variation and enjoyment as possible but some may look on this as "clutter". I would agree that bare electrical wires are very dangerous and caretaker makes regular checks on a weekly basis. However on the weekend in question, caretaker contacted me to say that the cable from a table lamp in the dining room had obviously been chewed through by a dog (teeth marks) and she removed the lamp immediately. I was not aware that a dog had been booked in for this week - a dogs lead had been left in the cottage. Cannot account for "cockroaches" as they are not native to the area but being in a country location cannot discount something coming in from the garden although this is most unusual. I have spoken to caretaker regarding "smells" and she is going to check this out and also have the fused bulb replaced in the bathroom. I am glad you agreed beds and couch were comfortable and that you were very happy with location and the large garden with its amazing sea views. The question referred to had already been answered fully in cottage website.

Our Waternish experience

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was all that we could have asked for and we had a fantastic week exploring Skye from our Waternish base. Downstairs had two lovely reception rooms, one of which was also used as a dining area and led to a rear kitchen that was very well equipped. The large family bathroom was also downstairs and had very good bath/shower facilities for easing the aches and pains of the day from the fantastic walks. Upstairs there were two large bedrooms with fabulous views, weather permitting, across the Loch. The beds were very comfortable, there was plenty of storage space and room for further cots etc. Outside was a large gravelled parking area with an outside seating area which we used to sit and enjoy the fabulous views with a cold glass of something nice. In front of that was a grassed garden area where we often saw rabbits roaming around. There were lots of books, games and local information/brochures provided to help entertain you and guide you to the Island's many attractions. We were also given good advice by the owner where to go and what to do, together with a few favourite pubs/restaurants. The Stein Inn was about a mile down the hill and had a lovely beer garden by the Lochside. Very pleasant after a hard day's yomping but put your midge cream on! It also does good pub food and has a separate restaurant. There is also a Yurt just up the road doubling as a café that served hot drinks and lovely cakes. We also tried the Diver's Eye boat trip from the jetty by the pub and spent a tranquil couple of hours eagle, red deer, whale and seal spotting, followed by a spot of fishing. Gordy was an entertaining local guide and fisherman.

Our overall experience of Skye was enhanced by having a lovely cottage as a base and the very pleasant but quiet surroundings. We will be back.

Exceptional views!

  • 3 of 5

The views from this property were astounding. We found the single track road a bit daunting when we first arrived (driving on the left was also a factor lol) but we soon realized that people respect their fellow drivers and the roads were no longer a challenge at all. We explored Skye with ease from this location, and the peace and serenity it offered was a gift. The bed was comfortable and the linens were lovely. The wifi access was weak but by constantly resetting it we were able to get access. Rarely had a good phone signal either but those were not really a bother to us.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind remarks on Eilean Isay cottage - sorry about the poor phone reception but that is why I have had to install payphone in the property - constantly complaining to BT but apparently it is a problem all over the island, however sometimes it is good to escape phone calls when on holiday. I am glad you felt the amazing views compensated for the loss of signal somewhat and hope you will return again some day to Skye.

Situated in an elevated position above Loch Bay in 5 acres of surrounding croft-land with panoramic sea views across to the Outer Hebridean islands, this cosy 2 bedroom holiday cottage was awarded 3 stars by Visit Scotland in 2011.

The magical peninsula of Waternish on the North West coast of Skye is approached by the Fairy Bridge from the main Portree-Dunvegan road. The breathtaking vista takes in Loch Bay and Dunvegan Head reaching out beyond the islands of Loch Dunvegan to the Outer Hebrides and the Atlantic Ocean. Post Code for the cottage is IV55 8GD.

This spectacular peninsula is the perfect base for lovers of the great outdoors exploring the rich history and wildlife of the area as well as offering a wide range of activites including hill walking, mountain climbing, artists, photography, cycling, whale/dolphin watching, bird watching (sea eagle/golden eagle/buzzards) It is also a keen photographer's dream with a panoramic seascape stretching from west to north, the view from Waternish over Loch Bay Islands to the archipelago of the Outer Hebrides is simply magnificent. Allegedly the most photographed sunset in Europe

The area has many visitor attractions including Skyeskins(Tannery), (5 star rated) who offer free guided tours round their exhibition sheepskin tannery, Shilasdair - a wool dye house, two potteries, three art galleries, craft shops plus a diving centre, boat trips, jetty and moorings, historic Stein village conservation area with its 18th century pub Stein Inn (which is a short 10 minute walk from the cottage) where you can enjoy a drink by the lochside and the wonderful Loch Bay Seafood restaurant - with its locally caught fresh seafood.

This is an ideal base for a family holiday. Very large enclosed garden (pet friendly) with garden furniture and terrace allowing guests to enjoy breakfast or a barbecue whist admiring the stunning views across the loch and in the evening the unforgettable sunsets and amazing dark skies with no light pollution.

Pets by arrangement - maximum 2 pets.

The main town in Skye is Portree - approx. 30 minute drive which has several banks, a large supermarket, gift shops, butcher/bakers, tea rooms, several excellent hotels - the short drive to the Cullin Hills Hotel in Portree is worth going if only for the views across Portree bay to the lovely harbour with its many fishing boats and yachts. Here you will also find the Tourist Office. Aros Visitor Centre offers museum, cinema, concerts, restaurant/coffee shop. Portree also has indoor swimming pool and excellent library located in the High School. The famous Cuillin Hills located in the South of the island are a climbers paradise and a boat trip out to the beautiful Loch Coruisk on the 'Bella Jane' is a must see.
