House on a unique location: alone in a bay of stunning beauty!

Overview

Property

Updated: 04-Dec-2016
The beach is only a few steps away. 4 sleeps, salina, malfa, punto scario

No other house in Salina has such a stunning position as Casa Arturo. The terrace offers a stunning view of the sea, the beach and the ‘faraglioni’ - the splendid volcanic rocks of the bay ‘Punta Scario’. A path leads directly to the beach. Salina is the greenest and perhaps the most beautiful of the seven Aeolian Islands, Salina offers restaurants, beaches, villages and authentic island life. Casa Arturo is close to the charming town of Malfa and 4 km of the bay of Pollara made famous by the film “Il Postino”.

The house consists of 2 floors (tot. 90 m2) and has two entrances. The ground floor consists of a living room, a dining table, bathroom with shower, toilet and bidet, and a small kitchen. An internal stairway leads to the first floor and on to two double bedrooms with quiet a low ceiling (2 meters). Both bedrooms has sea view. Note that the access to the second bedroom is via the first bedroom. The panoramic terrace has a set of table and chairs.

Getting to the Aeolian Islands:: Salina can be reached by ferry and hydrofoil from Sicily, Naples or Reggio Calabria. Milazzo (40 km west of Messina) is the main departure point for the Aeolian Islands. Ferries and hydrofoils leave daily and stop in several islands. It takes 1hr 30 minutes to reach Salina by hydrofoil (with Ustica Lines) and 3hr 40 minutes by ferry. In Salina ferries arrive in the harbours of Rinella or Santa Marina di Salina. Cars and mopeds can be rented here. It is possible to book a transfer with into Sicily from the harbour to the house (25 euro) and then rent a moped in Malfa. Please note that ferries are not always departing in the evening. Therefore we advice guests to book a flight that arrive early in Sicily or the day before the rental starts. The updated timetable is available on the website of the carriers companies.

(To know the website, please, do not hesitate to contact the owner).

About Salina: Salina is home to a wide variety caves and submerged volcanic craters. Salina is the most fertile of the Aeolian Islands and famous for its capers and the sweet Malvasia wine. Salina is not as crowded as Lipari or Volcano and less fashionable then Panarea, but boasts beautiful nature, excellent restaurants and shops. A bus service connects the villages and the most beautiful sites on the island. Cars and mopeds are available for rent in the main villages. There are excellent opportunities for walking. For example to Capofaro (lighthouse) that is set on the north coast of Salina and boasts stunning views of Panarea and Stromboli (on a clear night it can be possible to see its eruptions). The inactive volcanoes Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri gave the island its original Greek name 'Didyme' (meaning twins) The conical mountains are 965 and 860 metres high and provide excellent walking.

ENCHANTING

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for 2 weeks in November in this magical house and it is a cold day in February in NYC now and I am DREAMING about this house. It certainly cast a complete spell over me. Peaceful,lovely- for days all I could do was lie in bed and read and watch the sea outside the bedroom window and listen to the gentle rolling of the smooth rocks on the beach below as the waves broke on the shore. We cooked, read, relaxed, swam. We watched Stromboli send up it's steam daily. Morning jaunts into the charming village was a daily routine and EVERYONE was lovely and accomodating! We rented a scooter and toured around the island - a great place to explore. I I will certainly return and will not rest until I DO!

There was NO reason ever to leave this incredible house!

Romantic and beautiful!

Utterly unique and special place (although extremely rough and ready and uncomfortable inside)

  • 5 of 5

We had one of our most enjoyable holidays at Casa Arturo. The location is quite simply unbeatable. The house is perched on rocks overlooking a rocky beach and out to sea and has a perfect covered terrace on which we ate our meals or lay reading during the long days. The bedroom has a single window that looks out over beach and sea and our nights were soothed by the sound of the sea gently lapping onto the rocks below.

The local town (on which this house is on the edge) is the most perfect small Italian village, with butcher, deli, bakery and small supermarket for all your needs. It also houses two 5-star hotels, one of which (Signum) has a Michelin-starred restaurant, well worth a visit.

The island is covered in beautifully-maintained walking paths that climb to the top of the extinct volcanoes or go along the beautiful coastline. And from the beach you can hire canoes or inflatable beds on which to explore the coast or drift lazily in the hot sun.

The main town, Santa Marina, is enchanting and from there you can wander around its charming streets, take boats to visit local islands or simply have lunch at one of restaurants or cafes.

If you're looking for a very rustic getaway in a completely unique place, then you can't get better than this.

The negatives (which didn't bother us at all): the inside is EXTREMELY rustic. The house is battered by the sea during winter months so there's no upholstered furniture inside. The inside downstairs is also very dark, so if the weather isn't good (which happened to us only once), it's not great spending time indoors. Personally, I wouldn't choose to stay here outside the summer months. Also, the main bedroom is accessed through the second bedroom and there's no door, so not ideal for two sets of adults. One more thing: the terrace is partially overlooked by the public footpath leading to the beach below, so you need to get used to that.

Seaside on the isle of Salina

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house, overlooking Spiaggia Punto Scario on the edge of the town of Malfa. Incredible, uninterrupted views

of the sea, and eastward views of the islands of Panarea and smoldering Stromboli. We loved sitting on the porch and enjoying a homemade lunch or dinner - or just sitting and looking out at the beautiful colors of the facing rock cliffs and surrounding sea. The sound of the waves at night lull you to sleep. We're already thinking about a return next year!

Great place - if well kept for & properly cleaned

  • 3 of 5

5 stars for the fantastic Location, great for reaching the beach. Simple house (which we knew and was fine for us) which could be really nice if better kept for. 1 star for the lousy cleaning in the beginning (you had to clean the windows yourself if we wanted to see through, we needed to clean the sink in the shower if we wanted to have no floods in the bath etc.). Also very little equipment for a self catering family, we had to buy a few things to be able to manage.

Four stars because of the AMAZING view - house maintenance is necessary

  • 4 of 5

I'll sum it up by saying that this is possibly one of the best views on the island.

However, as a visitor you must be prepared for it being very rustic. Market is nearby but the walk is pretty long to carry many things. For three nights we were only provided with one roll of toilet paper. No paper towels, no dish soap, etc. The bath towels are about the size of a kitchen towel and the shower curtain was moldy. We also had a flea problem in the bed. We were met by a woman in a nearby parking lot who did not speak English but luckily my husband speaks Italian or that would have been very tough.

On a positive note, the outside deck is gorgeous and we spent 90% of our time out there. The rocky beach below is just wonderful with snacks and cocktails.

We would gladly visit the house again but would strongly advise the owners to provide a bit more in the way of furnishings and to make this home just a bit more upscale and just charge a bit higher price per night.
