About this property

Sandpiper - sea views and seconds from the beach

Welcome to Sandpiper cottage. Sandpiper is ideally located in the heart of the village and just a few steps to the beach - literally less than a minute's walk.

Previously a fisherman's cottage, Sandpiper now offers the home from home comforts you would expect to make your stay as relaxing as possible. Fresh linen and towels are provided as standard and a fully equipped, open plan kitchen / diner includes all of the standard appliances you might find in your own home (including gas hob, electric oven, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, fridge and freezer as well as a toaster and kettle).

The living room is a very comfortable place to wind down and if you're having a night in by the telly the 43 inch Ultra Smart HDTV hosts Freesat channels and all the major TV apps including Netflix, Amazon Prime (your own accounts required) BBC iPlayer, the ITV Hub and All4

Upstairs, our bedrooms are fresh and comfortable to give you a refreshing night's sleep on cotton linen. There are plenty of pillows too! The large double bedroom has a king size bed and lots of hanging space in fitted wardrobes. At the back of the cottage are two single rooms each with an adult sized single bed. These rooms have sea views - go to bed with the window open and you'll hear the sea! The large family bathroom has a large bath and a powerful over bath shower.

The location is perfect. In the morning, if for once you choose not to step out of the patio doors in to the sun kissed yard to enjoy an alfresco breakfast you can walk out to the village where you can let someone else serve you at one of several excellent cafés. All are within short walking distance. The Breakwater Café overlooks the sea at the Newbiggin Marine Centre which is just a few minutes walk from the cottage along the promenade. Another favourite is Bertorelli's Italian café where you can get great coffees and homemade ice cream in an authentic art deco setting. The Bertorellis have had coffee shops for many generations.

There are plenty of independent shops and restaurants close by. You won't need your car - you can walk everywhere. There are a couple of pubs very close by - The Queens Head is so close you could almost put your head through the door without leaving the cottage. It's right across the road. A quaint and quiet little pub, ideal for last orders! Turn right out of the cottage and a further little stroll down the road is the Cresswell Arms 'The Last Pub Before Norway'. You'll pass a very good Indian restaurant on the way.

Left out of the cottage into the village centre you'll find great fish and chips amongst other takeaway favourites and a very well stocked Co-Op mini market. There are a couple of great local bakers for your early morning loaf too.

All of this is within less than a 5 mins walk from the cottage.

The property was ideally situated to visit the town with its pubs and restaurants. Less than 5 minutes from the beach and promenade. It was well equipped, comfortable and clean.

Fantastic first stay.
From booking the cottage to leaving today, the process has been great. So much help from the owner on places to go which really helped plan our week. Would recommend Amble and Morpeth for days out - great shops and places to eat. My husband and daughter loved the rowing boats in Morpeth. The Queens Head pub over the road was amazing for food and drinks - so friendly too. Also loved The Artisan Tearoom for breakfast. Food was delicious and great value. Would recommend Caffè Bertorelli for ice creams. The cottage itself was comfortable and clean. Only negative we found was not enough glasses, but everything else was brilliant. We are all hoping to return as loved it there and loved Newbiggin.

A great base to explore Northumberland
From the initial booking through to leaving the accommodation the communication from John and Heather has been excellent. The property itself is so close to the beach you can feel the sand in your toes even before you step outside! A great location to explore Northumberland and Newcastle. The property is very comfortable and has all the modern day essentials. The welcome cake and provisions were greatly received after a long journey and the lounge is a great ‘chill’ area after busy days out and about. Newbiggin itself is quiet and relaxing with local amenities. A great accommodations and excellent hosts. Highly recommend.

Comfortable Cottage
This wasn’t our first stay in Northumberland but it was our first encounter with Newbiggin-By-the-Sea and it certainly won’t be our last - what a relaxing, and friendly little town it is. Sandpiper Cottage was clean and spacious, and equipped with dishwasher, fridge, separate freezer and washing machine. We had an issue with the washing machine and kettle but John was very responsive and quickly replaced the kettle. He offered to replace the washing machine but we chose to let him deal with that after our departure. The hob and oven was an ‘all in one’ combo (as opposed to gas hob and electric oven per the description), and we were surprised that the hob and oven required matches, as the automatic ignition was inoperable. There was a minimal number of cooking pots and pans but enough to make a simple meal. We would have found oven gloves helpful as well as coasters (only 2 supplied), and some place mats for the table. The kitchen has lots of storage, and like the bathroom, the decor is rather ‘tired’ but functional and both extremely spacious. We found the cottage comfortable and clean. A number of dishwasher tabs, and bottle of washing up liquid were left for our use. There were plenty of towels, and good linen. That said, we were a tad disconcerted in these Covid times that no cleaning products had been left for our use, but luckily we had brought some of our own. The WiFi was good and strong and what an added bonus to have a smart TV so we could use our Netflix/Amazon accounts. The owner had also left us a bottle of milk, a cake and tea & coffee bags for our arrival, which was also appreciated. We had no trouble parking right outside the cottage. During our stay, the pub opposite - The Queens Head - was closed due to renovations but we heard no noise from the builders. As an aside to the cottage, we found the fish & chips from Ladhars, and the Indian meal from Shaj Tandoori, to be excellent. Both are a quick walk from the house. All in all, we found the cottage comfortable and Newbiggin was a big hit for us and we hope to return.

Heather and I live locally in Morpeth - about 8 miles inland from Newbiggin. Heather is originally from the North-East and when I came up with her from London to live here 26 years ago I was sold. It's a great quality of life in a beautiful part of the country. We also have a cottage in Beadnell, further up the coast, where Heather 'grew up'. To us, Northumberland is all about the coast but don't neglect the beautiful natural countryside - which is equally beautiful. Proximity to Newcastle gives you the best of all worlds!

Why they chose this property

We bought it from a fisherman. We fell in love with it most of all because of its location. It really is in a good spot for all the local amenities that are on its doorstep. The cottage lends itself so well to being a holiday cottage. It is cosy but not too small and it has a very sociable living area with an open plan kitchen / diner and bi-fold doors that open up in to the living room.

What makes this property unique

It comes back to its central location while being so close to the beach. It also has sea views from the upstairs windows at the back of the house!
