We had a lovely weekend. The house was lovely and warm, and beautifully clean. The owner had left us some basics, such as milk, biscuits, coffee and tea. I would definitely recommend the house. The beds were comfortable. Lovely house.

About Gary and Samantha Easom

Gary Easom; Software Engineer, I love the outdoors and walking, particularly the Yorkshire Dales. Having travelled around the country and living for a time in Europe (employment) we settled back in Nottingham, close to family, with our 3 young kids.

Samantha Easom; accounts, very busy mum of 3 and the one with financial brains!

Gary and Samantha Easom purchased this house in 2002

Why Gary and Samantha Easom chose Hawes

I spent many family holidays, as a child, camping in the Yorkshire Dales, in the Wensleydale and Swaledale areas (parents inspired by watching All Creatures Great and Small!), I loved the outdoors and grew very fond of the Dales, they had an almost 'magical' quality. I have many fond memories of times spent in the Dales.

20 years later and wanting to introduce my children to the Dales and trying desperately to create some sort of pension, we looked for a property in the Wensleydale area. Yarn House had just come on the market and it was perfect, overlooking waterfalls, spacious, an existing holiday cottage since the 1970's, well located in the center of the Dales and a few minutes walk from lots of good pubs, shops and restaurants in Hawes. Gayle is perfect, situated just off the Pennine way, a picturesque village, and a mile or so from Hawes.

What makes this house unique

Yarn House has amazing views, a beautiful setting and features on many postcards and book covers about the Dales. It has a great location, close to Hawes and a wealth of pubs, restaurants and delightful shops. The cottage overlooks the waterfalls which, depending on the season, are a wonderful play area for children (my children loved the beck, they were happy to play and explore all day) or a nice setting to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer. During periods of heavy rain, the beck becomes a, quite spectacular, raging torrent!

Well placed for a visit to Hawes

  • 4 of 5

A comfortable cottage that suited our requirements quite well. In a lovely setting and well-placed for access to Hawes. The central heating failed on the final night with snow on the ground - a bit unfortunate but I'm quite sure it would have been quickly remedied.

Brilliant location

  • 5 of 5

The owners of this cottage have thought of pretty much everything. It’s incredibly well equipped. Lots of games and DVDs. The kitchen equipment is well stocked and the beds are comfortable. There were six couples staying and there was plenty of room for us all.

The location is beautiful, overlooking the falls. Ten minute walk into Hawes where there are some nice pubs and small shops.

Great house in a great location! Well maintained with good facilities.

  • 5 of 5

The house was nice, warm and comfy. There are plenty of walks to do straight from the doorstep so no need to get the car out for most of the week. Bedrooms cosy and comfy, we were a party of 2 adults, 2 teens and 3 smaller kids and the space worked fine for us. We especially liked the little extras they provided such as dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid, this was very thoughtful. Really a great wee house in a fabulous location. Lots for everyone to do!

The cottage is located in the picturesque village of Gayle, a short ten minute walk from Hawes.

Hawes is England's highest market town, set 850 feet above sea water and home to the famous Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese. The town is set in beautiful scenery (the name is derived from the Old Norse word hals, meaning "neck" or "pass between mountains") and has many restaurants, pubs and eateries as well as gift and antique shops. The town also has several good sized shops to buy provisions, a butchers, a local market, a laundry, library and other useful facilities.

There are some great attractions nearby including local waterfalls at Aysgarth, a fantastic gorge walk in Ingleton, the cliffs at Malham and the Lake District and Lake Windermere is, approximately, an hours drive.

A visit to England's highest pub, Tan hill, is recommended; a fantastic drive over the Buttertubs pass.

The Ribblehead viaduct, on the famous Settle–Carlisle Railway is also close by (15 minute drive).

Hardraw force, accessed through the Green Dragon pub, the highest waterfall in England, is a short walk from the cottage door.

There are many interesting walks, the Pennine way, places to visit and waterfalls close to or within walking distance of the cottage.
